I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

Welcome Optimist. It's a shame you've found us this evening - everything is pretty overcast and low key. You can probably see from the previous pics that we've had some terrific shows the last few nights. You can also scroll back through the last 36 hours or so on the Abisko sky station site.

Thanks, Dust and Pseudo.

GloriaSmud · 25/11/2014 20:51

Looks like Porjus and Abisko (screen shot from earlier on) are putting on a pretty good show tonight.

Some good nightfall shots in the thumbnails at Abisko this evening.

Abisko looking very pretty at the moment! I definitely value the real time experience much more than the screenshots of past sightings. Was lucky enough to see the Aurora Australis once (in person, not on a webcam) and hope to do so again some time.

GloriaSmud · 27/11/2014 09:54

Some beautiful colours at Abisko overnight.

Good pic Gloria - and seemingly out of nowhere. It was pretty much a hit & run bright patch, with murky lights either side.

Beautiful clear, starry skies on the north Finland camera and the start of lights - looks promising!

Pretty green glimmer visible between the clouds on the Abisko camera!

MelanieCheeks · 28/11/2014 18:46

Oh, excitedly marking place!

Optimist1 · 28/11/2014 18:48

And is the Bardabunga volcano erupting and causing the considerable shaking on the Bardabunga 2 camera here ??

DustBunnyFarmer · 28/11/2014 19:14

The shaking is usually high wind, although I haven't checked to see.

OP posts:
Optimist1 · 28/11/2014 19:19

Ah, high wind - I was getting all excited about experiencing a more dramatic force of nature!

GloriaSmud · 28/11/2014 19:21

Think it's high wind ~ that camera does seem to suffer from it! If there was an eruption, there would be many, many earthquakes registering here.

Optimist1 · 28/11/2014 20:04

Gloria, I daren't click on the link or I'd be adding earthquake-spotting to my list of whims and fascinations!! Thanks for the explanation, though.

DustBunnyFarmer · 30/11/2014 18:46

Interesting light at Abisko this evening - almost daylight-like, but it should be pitch black.

Similar light at Sodankyla, which is showing up the snow clumped on the fir trees. Just a hint of the aurora on the horizon (edge of shot) - one to watch this evening, I think.

Looks like there could be a good chance of seeing some Aurora a bit later on. Porjus webcam (camera 3) looks very cold this evening ~ loving the icicles!

GloriaSmud · 30/11/2014 19:18

DustBunny ~ that is a strange light there. At the moment there's a hint of blue, stars and a slight tough of Aurora as well!
