Keeping a small eye on Sunday/Mondays weather

It probably won't come off but I'm keeping a bit of an eye on Sunday and Monday.

Models show remnants of hurricane Bertha coming close to our shores and develop them in different ways. It's hard (for me) to de tangle which bit are Bertha but the results are, either nothing to worry about at at all (most likely scenario) or some potentially wild and wooly weather as two of the models develop some pretty tight gradient lows for this time of year.

GFS takes it across northern Scotland bringing windy weather to the north, ECMWF brings it across southern and central England bringing windy weather to the south. UKMO just produces a slack low which could bring in plenty of rain.

Will update with developments.

clux It always rains when we go to Norfolk but we always have a nice time anyway. Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/08/2014 12:21

Believe it or not the exact track is still not known! However I'd have absolutely no qualms about getting on an overnight ferry. The winds shouldn't get too bad until the morning, if they do get bad in that area.

Fresh only you can make that decision. I'd expect heavy rain, standing water and maybe branches and perhaps some weak trees coming down in the south. This is not a severe storm, it is just fairly unusual for this time of year and trees are more vulnerable in full leaf.

It's absolutely beautiful in west hants at the moment. Can't believe there's a storm heading our way overnight. I hope they've got it all wrongGrin

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 09/08/2014 13:13

Im volunteering tomorrow for a 10K run. I am going to be standing in an open space handing out water to the runners. Im going to get wet aren't I?

SloanePeterson · 09/08/2014 13:14

TwoLeftSocks, yep in March. The town seems very resilient though, I've been out and about this morning in the glorious sunshine and most places are open as usual. I feel horribly sorry for those who have been flooded, some people have raw sewage in their homes. I'm so so cross with the lack of help. I don't drive and am here with three dc. How am I meant to get sandbags? I'm even willing to pay for the damn things! No ones taking any kind of responsibility or leadership, it all feels a huge shambles tbh. I'm not going to sleep well for a while knowing how close to being flooded I was yesterday. It was the sheer volume of water that fell in such a short time. It did lull for about 45 minutes which gave it all chance to disperse off the patio and onto the grass, I dread to think what would have happened had it not. And tomorrow's meant to be worse. Im going to turn over the trampoline and weigh it down later too, I remember being given that tip from OYBBK last winter and I think it saved our fences! It all feels very calm before the storm ish here.very surreal.

SuburbanCrofter · 09/08/2014 13:18

Thank you Kitten!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/08/2014 13:22

Welcome cRofter :)

On the upside biscuits you probably won't have to do too much handing out of water.

Sloane, in the past I have made emergency sandbags out of carrier bags and soil. They worked pretty well in keeping the water out of our air bricks.

I do think that there is a big gap in emergency provision in many local authorities, especially at weekends and holidays. They do need to get their acts much more together as we are likely to see more of these events across the country with climate change.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/08/2014 13:24

Absolutely no change in the met office warnings reflecting the continuing uncertainty.

SloanePeterson · 09/08/2014 13:29

Soil is an excellent t idea, thank you :) the children can help me do that too. I don't think I'd need many of them as up water is (I hope) unlikely to reach the door, but there are 4 airbricks that I can see that will be under with only about 2 inches of water. I'm worried about the side of my house that I don't have access too as well, I might just ask my neighbours help with that. I'd rather be over prepared. I have bought the children a new movie in the event that the power doesn't go out again, and plenty of thick bread and bacon to see us through. Plenty of gin to go round too.might get started on that later in fact, give myself a head start.

GloriaSmud · 09/08/2014 14:26

'Tis a beautiful warm, slightly breezy day here.
We've been to an Allotment open morning and checked everything is OK in case of strong winds/rain tomorrow. If everything comes together, like is being reported in today's Express, think they've totally lost it this time! at least everything's weighted down at the allotment just in case! Grin

AtrociousCircumstance · 09/08/2014 15:19

Hello OYBBK, thanks for all your weather wisdom!

I'm supposed to be traveling by train from Brighton - London tomorrow in the early morning and returning in the late afternoon. Am a bit worried there might be delays to the service or I'll get stranded for a while? What do you reckon?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/08/2014 15:35

I have no idea how to protect against volcanic activity! I suppose it would be a matter of sweeping the roof a lot and hankies tied round our faces.
That headline gave me a good laugh!

Atrocious Im afraid how the trains will fare is anyone's guess. There is potential for disruption depending on trees, I'd take a good dollop of patience along with you.

Sloane, it sounds like you have a good plan going. Other things that have worked for us is making sure that any run offs aren't blocked with plants and soil and our neighbours in 2007 had to resort to using a pond pump to pump water from their drive, which actually worked really well until the Day Of The Deluge when it floated off down the road!

I'm going to be shoring up top heavy tomato plants and clearing the garden as much as I can. For those with trampolines in the south near the coast it might be worth considering whether you can weight them down or turn them upside down. Sand pit lids are probably potential frisbees too.

I will keep this thread updated as much as I can tomorrow as one forecaster thinks there may be something more severe wind wise in the afternoon into the midlands. Others are disagreeing with him, I'm going to find it interesting to see who is right.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 09/08/2014 16:22

Our weather lady on the East Midlands news last night mentioned something about high winds later on tomorrow.
I'd forgotten EarthWind Map for showing weather systems ~ Bertha is showing up nicely off to the SW.

ControlGeek · 09/08/2014 17:03

Oh crap, I'm flying out of Birmingham tomorrow evening. Please tell me the flights are unlikely to be delayed due to bad weather :(

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 09/08/2014 17:08

One team have called off rugby training, fingers crossed for the other!

SloanePeterson · 09/08/2014 18:25

The skies are darkening again here and I'm not ashamed to admit I'm actually scared. I've had terrible anxiety today and feel really wound tight about all this. My conservatory is clear of stuff, but I've not really moved much of anything else upstairs, mainly to avoid the Hmm looks from dp who still thinks it a massive overreaction. But I was home yesterday and saw how high it got, I don't think he really believes me. Thanks you so much for the bags filled with soil tip, the ground was actually very easy to dig up because it was so wet yesterday, and I have far more bags than I could have found sand bags so hopefully we'll be all set. Fully expect to lose broadband again tomorrow. I hope everyone stays safe x

Capitola · 09/08/2014 18:30

Getting very windy here (SE)!

Love that EarthWind map, btw.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/08/2014 18:41

Sloane I don't think until people have faced flooding they really understand the helplessness that it brings.

I can't give any guarantees about tomorrow but I can say that there is huge uncertainty about the amount of rainfall people will get and where the highest amount of rain will fall. Odds are you will be ok tomorrow and you are more prepared than you were yesterday, which was exceptional in your area.

I've found this flood plan which some of it you can do this evening which will be useful in the future too.

We are supposed to be in Warwickshire from lunchtime onwards, any ideas what it might be like there please?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/08/2014 20:28

Ages probably some heavy rain but clearing later in the afternoon. Wind is probably ok unless something unusual develops.

HumphreyCobbler · 09/08/2014 20:43

Our fast ferry to Cherbourg has been cancelled. Supposed to getting on it at four tomorrow. Now getting up at four in the morning to go from Poole instead.

Just so that we can get rained on for the whole time

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/08/2014 20:52

What a nuisance! I wonder what the criteria are for cancelling it, especially so far in advance. Would be interesting to see how often they cancelled it this past winter. I hope your journey goes smoothly.

HumphreyCobbler · 09/08/2014 20:57

Thank you! I have packed valium, I hate a rough sea. Especially as DH,DD AND DS will throw up. We have yet to see how Baby Cobbler reacts to a heavy swell Confused
