Weather warnings part 3 - February storms.

Really hoped we wouldnt need another thread so soon.

Tomorrow we have one dangerous storm with winds potentially 90mph off welsh coasts, 80mph inland and hitting Ireland very hard too.

met office warnings for heavy rain (exactly where we dont need it but also hitting western scotland), snow, perhaps even down to lower ground at times over night even pretty far south and storm force winds. Also widespread gales across England.

Then friday night into Saturday we have another potentially damaging low. The models have really struggled with this one and it needs a careful eye keeping on it.

Because the winds look so bad tomorrow for some (enough in the amber areas for me to suggest that you consider whether your journey is essential), I'll be logging on around 7:15am to update. My biggest concern is western Wales in the afternoon. However the track may change as the storm develops so the amber warning area may shift. It is possible that the met office may issue some red warnings close to the morning.

Looking further on, although storms may track to their more usual position (north of scotland) as the month goes on, unfortunately the rain looks set to continue, with little in the way of respite.

Fuck!
All I can say.

GloriaSmud · 12/02/2014 13:42

ColouringInQueen ~ you could try the metoffice website here or this site (posted this link earlier) here.

I've moved one of our (full) wheelie bins to the other side of our garden gate as we've had strong winds smash the bolt and lock before. Hope having the wheelie bin there will stop the gate blowing open.

starsandunicorns · 12/02/2014 13:44

Ok wibble has now turned to major wobble

dp driving to liverpool(he is a liverpool now) then down bristol !!!

Katnisscupcake · 12/02/2014 13:49

In Devon here. The winds were really bad mid-morning but they're clearly still strong because the change between blue sky and then black sky with rain is so rapid!!

I braved it earlier to take the dogs out, it had stopped raining but I've never seen so many wheelie bins blown over - some of them were full!!! And we were 'only' on an Amber warning...

I've just contacted my colleague to warn him as he has a caravan in North Wales. Not a lot he can do but he's got someone keeping an eye on it for him.

ColouringInQueen · 12/02/2014 13:50

thanks Gloria that xc one is perfect. 20-45mph gusts here are bad enough, really feel for all of you in the sw, wales and nw.

rallytog1 · 12/02/2014 13:52

V weird here in west Cheshire. We're in the red warning area, but the sun is shining and wind has dropped. Suspect this may be the weird calm before the storm but it feels a bit eerie. Dh and I are both off work today and have decided we're not going anywhere this afternoon.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 13:53

I'm back but its going to take a little time for me to thaw and dry out. I discovered my new boots are not waterproof. hmpfff. locally its only gusting to 50mph.

rallytog, youll find the winds suddenly pick up later this afternoon and it will be really fierce when it does.

stars, when is he setting off?

Just stopped raining here in dorset but wind is still strong, at least the school run should be dry.

gnushoes · 12/02/2014 13:59

I might have missed this being posted upthread but if not... tornado warning... www.torro.org.uk/site/forecast.php

teta · 12/02/2014 14:00

Same happening with us in Shropshire. Its gone strangely quiet and the sun has appeared. There's a light breeze fluttering the leaves in the hedgerows. Is this the equivalent of the eye of the storm Oybbk?

GladitsnotJustMe · 12/02/2014 14:01

I'm in North West Wales near the coast.

This morning we had very heavy rain and wind, but it has stopped for now... wind seems to be picking up though.

Just how bad do we expect it to be? Are we talking power cuts and trees down? I've just called my Dad on the advice of this thread and told him to tie down the trampoline!

coffeeinbed · 12/02/2014 14:02

BBC London just said winds up to 100mhp in Wales.
Can't be true, surely.

sewingandcakes · 12/02/2014 14:03

Pretty windy here now. Luckily DH got back with good supplies and I'm washing the kids onesies so they can be warm and cosy if we lose power. Still got the school run at 3 though...

starsandunicorns hopefully he'll be driving away from the worst of it if he's heading to Bristol? Must be awful for you.

AuntieStella · 12/02/2014 14:05

Lunchtime news said there are reports of trees down in N Wales. At least as deciduous ones are not in leaf, there might not be as many going over as in earlier storms.

Reporter in Newquay already talking about impact on local economy of likely half-term washout.

ouryve · 12/02/2014 14:05

Good illustration of squally, here. Every now and then the wind picks up and the rain is being hammered against the front and the back windows at the same time!

threebats · 12/02/2014 14:05

Swansea: extremely high wind, the sort that makes me nervous and I am not of a nervous disposition! Not much rain with it, squally showers leccy is flickering on and off ever few minutes,,,,
Posting this now incase it goes,
lostinwales hope you are ok.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 14:06

Gusting above 90mph in parts of Wales now.

I am really worried for lost, but she may well have lost power I guess.

AuntieStella · 12/02/2014 14:07

DH has been working away since Monday, and is driving back here lat this afternoon, bu it looks as if he'll be only in yellow (just fringing into amber) so I'm not worrying about him at the moment. I hope everyone on the road stays safe.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 14:08

coffee, I'm afraid it looks very likely. It is hurricane force. This compares with the 1990 Burns night storm I think.

Dillydollydaydream · 12/02/2014 14:08

Sounds scary. Weather says gusts of up to 53mph here which is bad enough, for the school run in half hour on foot bit concerned.

coffeeinbed · 12/02/2014 14:09

I've ran out of swearwords.
It doesn't happen often.

HumphreyCobbler · 12/02/2014 14:10

scary wind gusts here in Monmouthshire
am wondering if I should pick up dc instead of leaving for the bus

ouryve · 12/02/2014 14:11

Same here, dilly, and the snow has turned to hard icy slush, as predicted. Will probably have to walk in the road to avoid going down the hill on my backside.
