Weather warnings part 3 - February storms.

Really hoped we wouldnt need another thread so soon.

Tomorrow we have one dangerous storm with winds potentially 90mph off welsh coasts, 80mph inland and hitting Ireland very hard too.

met office warnings for heavy rain (exactly where we dont need it but also hitting western scotland), snow, perhaps even down to lower ground at times over night even pretty far south and storm force winds. Also widespread gales across England.

Then friday night into Saturday we have another potentially damaging low. The models have really struggled with this one and it needs a careful eye keeping on it.

Because the winds look so bad tomorrow for some (enough in the amber areas for me to suggest that you consider whether your journey is essential), I'll be logging on around 7:15am to update. My biggest concern is western Wales in the afternoon. However the track may change as the storm develops so the amber warning area may shift. It is possible that the met office may issue some red warnings close to the morning.

Looking further on, although storms may track to their more usual position (north of scotland) as the month goes on, unfortunately the rain looks set to continue, with little in the way of respite.

I like having the window open when it's cold/wet/windy and I'm in the bath too. Reminds me of going in the hot springs in New Zealand in the rain Grin

If we had a window open, it'd probably get ripped off its hinges. They're a bit too knackered to trust!

meglet · 14/02/2014 19:22

Ever the optimist, I've got the school trousers on the line hanging with several pegs each Hmm. They're a tad soggy but the creases have blown out beautifully.

jazzandh · 14/02/2014 19:28

that has made me laugh!

ErrolTheDragon · 14/02/2014 19:41

Canute - what, you mean they can't dock at Calais so they've got to come back and try again later?

NumptyNameChange · 14/02/2014 19:42

i'm about as central as you can get so it hasn't been too bad but this afternoon it was torrential rain and then the wind was so loud i actually thought it was thunder. sat in the front doorway and the water was pouring down the road. fortunately it was moving very fast even with most of the sky dark grey you could see it was blowing over and above was blue patches of sky.

i really feel for those who've got that but sticking around long enough to cause real damage. the area of the country where i live has been building on flood plains for years and more planned. fortunately i think where we are we are currently safe.

Marne · 14/02/2014 20:06

Wind is bad here, lights keep flicking, hearing of houses starting to flood not far from here ( luckily ours won't flood as we are on high ground ), have sent the kids to bed with a torch each. Roads were bad when dh came home from work, quite a bit of water but he said the wind was worse than the water and there were branches blowing around hitting cars.

jazzandh · 14/02/2014 20:08

Mid-Kent here and wind picking up now. has been getting noisy for last 20 minutes or so.....

mummylin2495 · 14/02/2014 20:11

Very very windy in Bournemouth. I can hear the fence rattling and will just have to hope it will stay up. Just had a huge downpour too. Lights did dim down jut now but ok at the moment. Have a flood in the front garden on our driveway.

digerd · 14/02/2014 20:17

S.Herts
Wind getting worse, noises like aircraft flying low and the odd movement of the house roof, not raining though.

HesterShaw · 14/02/2014 20:23

South Cornwall is getting absolutely battered. I've been down the seafront trying to salvage our stuff. Loads is ruined.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2014 20:25

:( Hester. I'm really sorry.

That's what insurance is for I guess. If they pay up.

canutesauntie · 14/02/2014 20:32

errol He has just texted again, they went back to Dover and theyve just declared it ok to go again so fingers crossed. Cant imagine what the toilets are like by now!

PestoStormissimos · 14/02/2014 20:33

canutesaintie DD1's 6th form friends are also doing Dover - Calais this evening for their ski trip, wonder if they're on the same boat?

DD2 has set off this evening for Austria for her ski trip too, but fortunately they're going through the tunnel.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/02/2014 20:36

Canute - ew yes, after a rough double-crossing. Fingers crossed for him ... I've told my DD to expect delays as doubtless there will be a backlog by tomorrow night when she does the trip. Still, lucky them going skiing - nice sensible solid water!

canutesauntie · 14/02/2014 20:44

The ferries must be swarming with school ski parties this weekend. DS is fine, heading for the cafe as usual. They just have the next 18 hour drive to look forward to now.

Hester hope it doesnt get any worse down there

Nocomet · 14/02/2014 20:52

Hester, hugs. DH is from near PZ and he's trying to make sense of wave hight readings. He desperately hopes they are wrong as they seem to be incredibly high.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/02/2014 20:57

canutes - yes - DD went two years ago and said the queue up to the ferry was all school trip buses.

Oh well, they're resilient at that age and can probably huddle up and sleep on the coach - its the teachers I'm amazed at doing that trip, even if they do get a week's free skiing I don't think I'd fancy it even in good weather.

JillJ72 · 15/02/2014 01:39

N Bucks and very wild, much worse than Wednesday. Wall opposite house has collapsed. Hope our chickens are OK....

mummylin2495 · 15/02/2014 02:43

Been horrendous winds all eve and still the same now.

FallenAngel22 · 15/02/2014 02:50

I'm in N E Wales and despite no weather warnings here the wind and rain has been battering the house for the last hour. On a par with Wed night.

Ballsballsballs · 15/02/2014 03:31

Surrey here. Have been woken by a tile scraping down the roof above my head.

NumptyNameChange · 15/02/2014 05:47

northamptonshire here - was woken up about 4 by the wind battering us but like yesterdays peak bit the centre of it has seemed to pass over us quite quickly.

i can see how if i lived by a river though it would only take a few of those torrents like yesterday in quick succession to have mayhem on your hands.

thinking of everyone dealing with this.

i'm just hoping my my chickens are still there when it's light enough to see and that they and the house and run haven't had a wizard of oz like flight.
