Weather warnings part 3 - February storms.

Really hoped we wouldnt need another thread so soon.

Tomorrow we have one dangerous storm with winds potentially 90mph off welsh coasts, 80mph inland and hitting Ireland very hard too.

met office warnings for heavy rain (exactly where we dont need it but also hitting western scotland), snow, perhaps even down to lower ground at times over night even pretty far south and storm force winds. Also widespread gales across England.

Then friday night into Saturday we have another potentially damaging low. The models have really struggled with this one and it needs a careful eye keeping on it.

Because the winds look so bad tomorrow for some (enough in the amber areas for me to suggest that you consider whether your journey is essential), I'll be logging on around 7:15am to update. My biggest concern is western Wales in the afternoon. However the track may change as the storm develops so the amber warning area may shift. It is possible that the met office may issue some red warnings close to the morning.

Looking further on, although storms may track to their more usual position (north of scotland) as the month goes on, unfortunately the rain looks set to continue, with little in the way of respite.

Shock with regards to the fire. It really must feel apocalyptical. Incredible.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2014 15:20

tornado watch issued

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 14/02/2014 15:21

OYBBK throw in a tornado and I'll believe it is Shock

JerseySpud · 14/02/2014 15:29

OYBBK does that tornado warning include Jersey? O.o

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2014 15:33

Probably not Jersey but it is perhaps possible. Its not my strong point in forecasting - its very specialised. If it were to occur it would probably be in the form of a water spout that made landfall.

OP posts:
HesterShaw · 14/02/2014 15:40

Is it true that waterspouts tend to dissipate when they reach land?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2014 15:44

generally yes Hester but not always. Some of the south coasts most damaging tornadoes started off as waterspouts. (for instance the one that hit Patrick Moores observatory in '98)

I think we will be getting our power cut kit out again this evening, just in case. (We seem to lose power if somebody sneezes)

JerseySpud · 14/02/2014 16:19

Aye same here. Phone is charged, laptop is charged. mind you im just going to bed if there is lol. Had a crap day.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2014 16:23

Sorry to hear that Jersey.

For obvious reasons, the Tamar Bridge has been closed to high sided vehichles, which is apparently causing long delays :(

Lots of flooded roads around the southwest and beyond I'm sure. Includes flooding on the A38 (and other major roads) in places, so if you're travelling down for half term then it would probably be best to check before setting off.

The wind has really go up here but still not as strong as it's been earlier in the week, and it's raning again.

Hope everyone stays safe.

SlowlorisIncognito · 14/02/2014 16:42

Sorry for the double post- the flood warning for the South Cornwall coast has been upgraded to severe www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/floods/142151.aspx

There's lots of new flood warnings + severe flood warnings on the map too.

insomniarules · 14/02/2014 17:28

Wind picking up here. Met office has changed our alert to amber for wind.
How much longer will this continue?
What happens to all thd hibernating animals or crops that will be sown soon?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2014 17:36

Looks like the 5 new severe flood warnings are partially associated with coastal flooding.

crashbangboom · 14/02/2014 17:57

Oybbk will there be any end to this weather?

I'm fed up with the daily struggle of getting around a county filled with potholes or flooded roads?!

No where near as bad as Somerset I know

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2014 18:18

Have a look at earlier posts today crashbang :)

Hello OYBBK

I haven't posted much at all recently, but have been following your threads almost religiously.

I have spent most of the past few months like this Shock

Just watching the 6 o'clock bbc news. It's just shocking!!!

We have been lucky that we've not had any flooding and not too much damage. We are just outside SW London and not too far from the thames. It is very high and incredibly fast flowing. I drive past most days and it has been getting higher and that is without the last few days rain.

I just wanted to say my thoughts are with everyone who has been or is being affected. Anyone travelling today and tomorrow, please take care.

OYBBK, thank you so so much. I really think you are the most amazing person for doing everything you do on these threads to help people stay safe. Here are some Flowers , Wine a Brew and some Cake.

Here's hoping the latest storm isn't as bad as the previous ones, although the way our double glazing is creaking makes me think it might be. Hmm

Xxx

digerd · 14/02/2014 18:30

S.Herts
I was lucky today and managed 2 short dog walks with no rain.
Strange though that atm it is 11 degrees outsideHmm

ToffeeWhirl · 14/02/2014 18:30

Really heavy rain and strong wind here in E Sussex at the moment. I work in a barn on a farm and it sounded like the roof was going to fall in under the downpour earlier today. The lights kept flickering too. Was relieved to get away, especially as the roads are starting to flood again.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2014 18:32

Thank you Mumat :)

It really is shocking I don't ever remember such an intense period of weather.

The storm may actually be a little less strong than first feared in the SE. GFS 12z has the winds a little less fierce.

Dp is out getting a take away. I hope he's ok Confused

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2014 18:48

Mine had to go out and get the ingredients for dinner. I'm going to have a lovely soak in the bath with the window wide open so I can hear the gale howl

Evening all, very squally here up my hill in Gloucestershire. The electric is flickering so flask made up & torch at the ready again. DS is on a Dover Calais ferry en route to school ski trip and they've turned round outside Calais to go back to Dover. Sounds most enjoyable.

Re the fire on the peat bog - there wont be a reason for it as its in Borth (scene of Hinterland & my summer holidays) and Borth is basically in some sort of parallel world! Grin

jazzandh · 14/02/2014 18:49

We are right in the middle of a squall that is travelling across Kent at the moment! (watch it approaching courtesy of netweather radar!!)

glad I'm indoors
