Weather warnings part 3 - February storms.

Really hoped we wouldnt need another thread so soon.

Tomorrow we have one dangerous storm with winds potentially 90mph off welsh coasts, 80mph inland and hitting Ireland very hard too.

met office warnings for heavy rain (exactly where we dont need it but also hitting western scotland), snow, perhaps even down to lower ground at times over night even pretty far south and storm force winds. Also widespread gales across England.

Then friday night into Saturday we have another potentially damaging low. The models have really struggled with this one and it needs a careful eye keeping on it.

Because the winds look so bad tomorrow for some (enough in the amber areas for me to suggest that you consider whether your journey is essential), I'll be logging on around 7:15am to update. My biggest concern is western Wales in the afternoon. However the track may change as the storm develops so the amber warning area may shift. It is possible that the met office may issue some red warnings close to the morning.

Looking further on, although storms may track to their more usual position (north of scotland) as the month goes on, unfortunately the rain looks set to continue, with little in the way of respite.

I hope it's not too bad at Stansted this evening. DH is flying in from Italy and is a nervous flyer at the best of times.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2014 12:43

It is possible that the SW is at the end of the heavier rain for today, but I think it will renew this evening.

From the met office: Rainfall totals of 34.2mm at Harbertonford, South Devon and 24.2mm at Plymouth so far today

Hello OYBBK, I'm in West Wales and the wind is roaring again. We've still got trees down all over the place from Wednesday. So we know how bad it's going to get here?

And what's the weather going to be like tomorrow morning?! I've got an important appointment with a man about a horse.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2014 12:57

Chris, it looks like you are going through the worst at the moment - gusting to around 60mph. It should die down a little (though not entirely) later this afternoon before picking up again a bit later on. Tomorrow the winds will still be strong and the rain will take some time to die away entirely. Perhpas some strong blustery showers later.

That's good to know it's not going to get worse. It's literally roaring out there. Really disconcerting. There's been so much damage around. I just worry that any trees weakened on Wednesday will be tipped today.

Once this weekend is over is that the end of this insane wind or is there more to come?

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 14/02/2014 13:06

I've got my fingers crossed that the power doesn't go out again. The lights have been flickering all morning.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 14/02/2014 13:20

o Chris, does that mean the FYF is rained off?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2014 13:25

It looks calmer in at least the short term.

Its probably worth scrolling up/down the thread to see if I have answered similar questions that day rather than waiting for a response. I do try and do a longer term forecast once a day or so too. I really dont mind at all answering specific questions, I appreciate how much anxiety these storms are creating but it is taking me a significant amount of time each day to answer queries and sadly I cant put all of life on hold much as I'd like to.

Doctrine, never! We'll find a way Grin

OYBBK that's very good news. It'd be nice to have some normal weather for a while.

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 14/02/2014 13:30

Sorry OYBBK. You're quite right. I very much appreciate you taking your time to respond :)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2014 13:34

:)
normal=showery and wet rather than buckets of deluges!

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 14/02/2014 13:36

It's Wales Grin if it wasn't wet I'd assume the apocalypse was upon us.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2014 13:50

Grin we camped by snowdon last year. My goodness the rain! And our pop up tent kept trying to put itself away again with the wind. Most inconvenient.

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 14/02/2014 14:00

OYBBK we have a very special kind of Welsh rain. It's... Persistent. It's similar to the Lake District's rain, but with a Welsher demeanour Grin

It seems to be settling into a windy drizzle here. Which hopefully will put out the peat fire that started nearby last night Shock how does sodden pear catch fire?!

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 14/02/2014 14:00

Peat, not pear, silly autocorrect

GladitsnotJustMe · 14/02/2014 14:02

Hi OYBBK, thanks for your ongoing dedication to the cause, hope you're managing to take some time for yourself too. Brew

It's raining heavily here in N Wales now, with some strong gusts, but nowhere near as bad as Wednesday.

I'm half hoping the weather does get worse so I don't have to drive to mid-wales first thing tomorrow morning.. Wink

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2014 14:11

How on earth does peat catch fire in this?? That's mad!

:) Gladit. I'd love a cuppa! I have a friend coming round soon. Will be lovely to catch up with her. Moderate rain here but the wind is still calm. Seems weird to think its going to get quite rough (again) later.

GloriaSmud · 14/02/2014 14:14

Rain seems to come and go here (Leicester) It does feel colder than the 4.6C my weather station says it is though!

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 14/02/2014 14:15

it's the apocalypse I reckon

GloriaSmud · 14/02/2014 14:18

I spotted this in today's Daily Mail about the peat bog fire. Seems it was started when downed power lines ignited the peat.

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 14/02/2014 14:22

Gloria, we do have a lot of lines down, I'd assumed that was the case. The only other explanation would have been arson, and I think people had other things on their minds with all the destruction.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/02/2014 14:37

Good timing here - bins collected and we got rid of the fallen part-tree in this morning's lull ... its unpleasant again now.

Looks like my DD's trip will escape the worst of the wind but presumably the sea will stay pretty rough for a while after the wind abates.

SpottyTeacakes · 14/02/2014 14:39

So much water on the roads here Shock I think many will be closed soon

HesterShaw · 14/02/2014 14:50

Look at this folks!!!!!! There look like two days next week without a gale. And that is Land's End which is usually very windy indeed. Imagine if it comes true! We'll be able to go out without getting hair and clothing wrapped round our heads, without risking the car door every time it opens, without the fear a tree will land on our heads. A miracle indeed.

I haven't seen Actual Blue on Magic Seaweed for weeks, maybe months.
