Weather warnings part 3 - February storms.

Really hoped we wouldnt need another thread so soon.

Tomorrow we have one dangerous storm with winds potentially 90mph off welsh coasts, 80mph inland and hitting Ireland very hard too.

met office warnings for heavy rain (exactly where we dont need it but also hitting western scotland), snow, perhaps even down to lower ground at times over night even pretty far south and storm force winds. Also widespread gales across England.

Then friday night into Saturday we have another potentially damaging low. The models have really struggled with this one and it needs a careful eye keeping on it.

Because the winds look so bad tomorrow for some (enough in the amber areas for me to suggest that you consider whether your journey is essential), I'll be logging on around 7:15am to update. My biggest concern is western Wales in the afternoon. However the track may change as the storm develops so the amber warning area may shift. It is possible that the met office may issue some red warnings close to the morning.

Looking further on, although storms may track to their more usual position (north of scotland) as the month goes on, unfortunately the rain looks set to continue, with little in the way of respite.

Not surprised the City game is off. It's wild here - just looked out the bedroom window to see an unidentified item sailing down the road.

The M60 is apparently at a complete standstill - not sure anybody could have got to the game even if it was on!

Greater Manchester Fire has tweeted all officers off work to come in to respond to the high number of calls. They currently have 40 live calls.

RedToothBrush · 12/02/2014 18:50

Local news keep abandoning links due to technical difficulties with the weather...

SlowlorisIncognito · 12/02/2014 18:53

This may be useful for anyone affected by flooding/severe weather.

Even though they're accepting West coast tickets into Scotland, East coast mainline trains are now at reduced speed between Newark and Darlington.

And I've been watching the feeds warning about the bad road conditions (specifically the M62) for Sunderland's away match at Man City, thinking why the hell is this going ahead? A tweet has just come through saying it has been abandoned because of the weather. Surely that sort of call should have been made this morning, before people started trying to travel.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 18:58

Maryz, it's the same storm, but there have been two phases of the high winds, one generally to the south of the storm and then the very high winds around the core of the storm, with a potential sting jet forming.

Be with you in a few minutes harbinger, watching the news with dinner on my lap.

Thank you flootshoot, that's reassuring. I can barely cope with the normal 3.5-4 hour drive and would be in agony with any significant hold ups. (I know, can happen any old time!) Just didn't want to add in a lanes shut due to flooding......

Now, the wind............

AuntieStella · 12/02/2014 18:59

ouryve MCFC v SFC match has been called off.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 19:02

And we have lightning and hail. Might have to power down the pc if continues.

pepperrabbit · 12/02/2014 19:03

We're having proper thunder and lightening now Confused

ToffeeWhirl · 12/02/2014 19:03

kitten - I don't understand. Why is wind speed 27mph, but gusts 50 - 60mph Confused. I don't understand the difference. It was scarily windy, though, so that makes more sense to me.

bobbin - sorry you're stuck on a train Sad.

ouryve · 12/02/2014 19:03

That's what I said, AuntieStella - it baffles me that they left it until so late in the day to make that call, when so many people will already have tried to make the 100+ mile journey.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 19:05

windspeed is the steady background wind. Gusts are the big blows on top.

OP posts:
pepperrabbit · 12/02/2014 19:05

and hail! Storming down the chimney and bouncing into the lounge, to the great excitement of the DCs.

AuntieStella · 12/02/2014 19:06

Oh I'm so sorry ouryve I was majoring on the first part of your post and that led me to make a bit of a hash of it all.

TheGreatHunt · 12/02/2014 19:08

Where are you all with thunder and hail?? Hope it's not too scary.

RedToothBrush · 12/02/2014 19:08

Police are asking people not to come in Manchester city centre.

Trains between manchester and stockport out now. It will be total chaos in the morning too round manchester.

Mirage · 12/02/2014 19:10

We had a very scary drive across a disused airfield earlier, with nothing to stop the wind.I drive a solid, heavy 4 x 4 which was shuddering as the wind hit us.There was a tree down on the hill outside the village,a friends wall has collapsed and there was a 10ft branch across our drive when we got back, but we have got off lightly compared to some.

ouryve · 12/02/2014 19:10

s'alright. I often find that my fingers haven't typed what my brain was saying, long after I've hit post - I had to go back and re-read :o

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 19:11

harbinger, at the moment the timings are that the rain will move across in the morning and the rest of the day looks very wet. wind sppeds, though strong dont look to pick up too much until late evening.

My plan if I were you would be to set off soon after breakfast to catch the best of the weather, just because it will be a more comfortable journey. Are you able to do that or do you need to set off in the evening? You'd be fine early evening though it would be very wet and pretty windy, but you'd be away from the stronger winds in time unless things change.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 19:12

I'm in the south, was just a single flash and a light layer of hail. Just a winter squall.

HungryHorace · 12/02/2014 19:19

It's getting seriously wild on the NW coast...trying not to worry too much.

My in laws are flying out of Manchester in an hour or so. Rather them than me! :-/

LostInWales · 12/02/2014 19:20

I think that's the worst of it over for us at least. Please OYBBK tell me that's the worst of it over! Phew, electricity on/off on/off on/off, main road in town was closed as there was a rain of roof tiles and no electricity, Tesco shut for the same reason. There's a heap of trees down all over, in the middle of town a tree came down in the main car park and totaled a car BUT as far as I know the damage has only been to stuff, not people. Ooof, good luck the rest of the country.

Poor Milly, that did make me laugh though. It also spookily reminded me of an episode of Dr Who where they were all in space suits? Anyone else? No? I'll get my coat Grin.

starsandunicorns · 12/02/2014 19:21

Not looking forward to the drive to work in the morning

ElbowPrincess · 12/02/2014 19:21
