Weather warnings part 3 - February storms.

Really hoped we wouldnt need another thread so soon.

Tomorrow we have one dangerous storm with winds potentially 90mph off welsh coasts, 80mph inland and hitting Ireland very hard too.

met office warnings for heavy rain (exactly where we dont need it but also hitting western scotland), snow, perhaps even down to lower ground at times over night even pretty far south and storm force winds. Also widespread gales across England.

Then friday night into Saturday we have another potentially damaging low. The models have really struggled with this one and it needs a careful eye keeping on it.

Because the winds look so bad tomorrow for some (enough in the amber areas for me to suggest that you consider whether your journey is essential), I'll be logging on around 7:15am to update. My biggest concern is western Wales in the afternoon. However the track may change as the storm develops so the amber warning area may shift. It is possible that the met office may issue some red warnings close to the morning.

Looking further on, although storms may track to their more usual position (north of scotland) as the month goes on, unfortunately the rain looks set to continue, with little in the way of respite.

Where are they going Hungry?

BlackeyedSusan · 12/02/2014 19:23

bobinogs there is a tree on the line between stafford and nuneaton.

Draughts · 12/02/2014 19:23

Very noisy with wind bellowing down the chimney. The dog won't sit near it at all. We are in Leicestershire so think we are avoiding the worst for now.

I hope everyone makes it home safely. DH is staying overnight near to his office tonight in London, seemed daft for him to risk the journey if he didn't have to.

HungryHorace · 12/02/2014 19:23

Auckland, via Dubai and potentially Brisbane. If they get off the ground here!

Draughts · 12/02/2014 19:24

Oh Hungry, definitely rather them than me tonight!

StairsInTheNight · 12/02/2014 19:24

Hope everyone is ok and not too much damage, this is a horrible winter.

Are things going to quieten down next week? Selfishly wondering how Monday is looking, hoping to fly out of Gatwick, preferably not into the eye of another storm!

Kahlua4me · 12/02/2014 19:25

Could you please tell me what the weather is like in north Devon?

I am planning on taking the kids there next week and can't find any information.

We are in Berkshire and its all pretty bad around here so I am a bit worried about driving but friends seem to think its ok near Croyde.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 19:26

Lost, it is the worst over for you :)

I have a bath running, I'll be back later. Tricky squeezing life in at the moment!

Struggling here. Part of the roof has come off the football stadium into the road, closing it. Trees have come down on roads everywhere. Very glad OH isn't working tonight (delivery driver for Dominos).

Back home is faring even worse (Barmouth). My parents are completely stranded, no way of getting out in any direction, and a storm surge too so the promenade and harbour will get it bad by the sound of things Sad

ouryve · 12/02/2014 19:33

Hungry - I'd wonder if their flight's even leaving, yet.

Lost, hope it's not too depressing in the morning.

Some road closures - M62 Ouse bridge (so sorry, but no one will be visiting Brian in Hull by that route) and the A628 Woodhead pass.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 12/02/2014 19:34

I'm in E Lancs & we've got off incredibly lightly so far this year but the wind is fierce now, & scary [wimp]

It's blowing along the roof, hoping we don't lose any slates

Power ok though, so far not even a flicker

bobbinogs · 12/02/2014 19:34

Thank you blackeyed susan .......you know more our train manager ! Looks like I may be here for a very long time.....thank god for free wifi and Mumsnet..

bobbinogs · 12/02/2014 19:35

You know more than our train manager

ouryve · 12/02/2014 19:35

moomin - is there no high point your parents can get to? Is there an evacuation plan for their locality? Very worrying.

Farrowandbawl · 12/02/2014 19:35

Hungry

Their flight has been delayed until 22:50

www.manchesterairport.co.uk/flightinformation/

Click on depertures tab and then scroll down. There's only two flights to Dubai that I can see and they are both delayed until nearly 11pm.

ToffeeWhirl · 12/02/2014 19:38

kitten - thanks for explaining that Smile.

harbinger · 12/02/2014 19:39

Thanks OYBBK, intending to set off after the rush hour. Not too worried about the journey, excellent driver :) but am worried about leaving the house if the winds are going to be stronger than the October and December winds (roof worries).

HungryHorace · 12/02/2014 19:39

I've taken my eye off the ball coming on here, Farrow, as it showed on time last time I checked.

They're in one of the lounges, so hopefully they can stay in there as long as necessary.

I did wonder if they'd fly as it's just getting worse and worse.

RedToothBrush · 12/02/2014 19:40

Lots of flights are cancelled from Manchester but they are mainly shorthaul. Suspect that will affect other airports for the next couple of days as planes will be in the wrong place.

Looks like that Dubai flight is still due to go but has been delayed until 22.50 - which is when the worst of the weather is supposed to have passed.

It does seem to have eased up a bit here though.

ApocalypticBlackHorseman · 12/02/2014 19:43

Stairs good luck with the flight. I'm taking a family member to Heathrow for a flight next week, I hope they can go - they are due to be flying north into where all this wind is coming from :(

SpottyTeacakes · 12/02/2014 19:43

It's really windy here again and chucking it down

SlowlorisIncognito · 12/02/2014 19:44

Kahlua I don't think things have been too bad in N. Devon- as things have gone in the South-West. The bits that flood have flooded, and trees have come down. It hasn't been quite as extreme as the south coast and Cornwall have been. If where you are going is sheltered and doesn't usually flood you will probably be ok.

That said, at the moment there are problems on the A39 due to power cables having been brought down. You might want to check wherever you are staying has power. Aparently there are 8,100 properties without power in the SW atm.

Also lots of trees have come down today all over Devon, including near Barnstable where a man had to be rescued after being trapped under a fallen tree. So if there are high winds again then be careful travelling. Also, some of the bridges do get shut in high winds.

When are you going? There are warnings for wind and rain in the SW on Saturday.

JadziaSnax · 12/02/2014 19:45

Errol, thank you for that link. Am also in Rossendale and it's wild out there. The M65 & Grane was a v v scary journey earlier.

headlesslambrini · 12/02/2014 19:51

I'm just north of Liverpool, really high winds here on the coast, electricity has flickered but still staying on, so far.

Have candles all lined up but I have to go out later to collect DS from cadets. Need to go down country lanes and across open farmland - that should be fun.

thenightsky · 12/02/2014 19:53

DH just got in from M62. A lorry jackknifed right beside him on a roundabout... missed him by about 2 foot Shock

The wind took his glasses off whilst he was trying to help the lorry driver and he's had to drive home in his prescription sunglasses.
