Weather warnings part 3 - February storms.

Really hoped we wouldnt need another thread so soon.

Tomorrow we have one dangerous storm with winds potentially 90mph off welsh coasts, 80mph inland and hitting Ireland very hard too.

met office warnings for heavy rain (exactly where we dont need it but also hitting western scotland), snow, perhaps even down to lower ground at times over night even pretty far south and storm force winds. Also widespread gales across England.

Then friday night into Saturday we have another potentially damaging low. The models have really struggled with this one and it needs a careful eye keeping on it.

Because the winds look so bad tomorrow for some (enough in the amber areas for me to suggest that you consider whether your journey is essential), I'll be logging on around 7:15am to update. My biggest concern is western Wales in the afternoon. However the track may change as the storm develops so the amber warning area may shift. It is possible that the met office may issue some red warnings close to the morning.

Looking further on, although storms may track to their more usual position (north of scotland) as the month goes on, unfortunately the rain looks set to continue, with little in the way of respite.

Winds and heavy rain has suddenly got up again. Really strong with sideways rain. Hopefully it is just a small patch and will tail off soon. =/

LadyCelia · 12/02/2014 17:05

Crikey, it was bad enough down here in Surrey at lunchtime today, so I really feel for those of you further north & in Wales at the moment (particularly in the IoM, kippersmum, hope you are all OK). DS's school is closed now til after half term to clear up all the fallen trees from this afternoon!

OYBBK, would it be a really bad idea to drive from the SE to Cornwall tomorrow before the next weather front hits on Friday, or should my parents just leave it til after the weekend (as I am trying to persuade them!) And thank you for your updates, they are really appreciated by us all.

bobbinogs · 12/02/2014 17:06

Can anyone give me info.... I'm on a train home from London to Preston....due to drive from Preston railway station to Clitheroe at around 7 tonight.... What's it like at the moment, what am I likely to face.... If it looks too dangerous I'll try and get a bed for the night in Preston.... Kids are home and safe with dad....anyone local to the area let me know what's happening....

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 17:09

Ladycelia, apart from actual road conditions tomorrow should be ok. I think that the flooding after saturdays storm is going to be even worse, so actually tomorrow is probably better. (unless theres a reason why you dont want them this weekend then, yes, yes of course they should stay at home!)

OYBK - the snow gates on the A66 were shut last night, anyhow and it's been shut to high sided vehicles for most of the day.

The rain's eased off in the north east but the wind is yet to reach its peak and the forecasts are now worse than they were earlier this afternoon.

embouchure · 12/02/2014 17:11

LadyCelia we must be in different parts of Surrey as was very quiet for me here in my bit of Surrey - a bit gusty, but nothing bad.

GladitsnotJustMe · 12/02/2014 17:11

Is there more forecast for Saturday OYBBK?

I'm supposed to be travelling to Mid-Wales. I'd be thrilled if I couldn't make it...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 17:11

bobbinogs, I obviously dont know the local conditions but weatherwise it is going to be particularly bad around that time. Is your train running to time?

OP posts:
ouryve · 12/02/2014 17:13

And yes, the amber zones now cover more of the Northeast.

CPtart · 12/02/2014 17:14

I'm in Preston, we are in the "red zone" here and tbh although it is supposed to ease by about 9pm tonight I wouldn't fancy driving anywhere tonight. There is a Premier Inn about 5 mins from the station, might be safer??

MillyBlodyn · 12/02/2014 17:15

Horrendous here in North Wales. Slates are flying off our roof and landing Luke daggers in the garden. Winds of 105 mph and lots of trees down . Schools closed.Sad

ouryve · 12/02/2014 17:15

A66 for high sided vehicles just re-confirmed

Highways Agency ?@HAtraffic_neast 15s

#A66 closed in both directions to all #highsided vehicles between A1 and M6 due to strong winds.

I spotted a few other transpennine routes that had the same status, when I skimmed through.

sewingandcakes · 12/02/2014 17:16

Bobbinogs I'm in rossendale and it's windy but nothing particularly bad yet . The dogs are scared though. I know that things can change quickly though and I think it said on the news that trains won't be running between Preston and shap from 19:00-21:00. I hope you're ok.

LadyCelia · 12/02/2014 17:18

OYBBK, thank you - they can't get back to the IoM as DM won't get on the ferry in this weather (even if they do run!) so they want to get away to see friends down there instead, so tomorrow is good then!

embouchure - SW London/N.Surrey border, and it was wild for about an hour! I was driving down the A3 and struggling to keep the car straight at one stage. Not like that mad storm that came through the other Saturday though. And since then it has been nice & sunny, so strange.

MillyBlodyn · 12/02/2014 17:21

108 mph now. Sad

GladitsnotJustMe · 12/02/2014 17:23

Bobbinogs are you due to go through Crewe?

Just seen this on Twitter:

All railway lines blocked at #Crewe and the station has been evacuated due to damage to the station roof and debris #UKStorm

GladitsnotJustMe · 12/02/2014 17:23

Still very bad in N Wales... and I've just discovered a leak in the roof Sad

NEED DP to come home from work, I'm scared!!!

BlackeyedSusan · 12/02/2014 17:24

the amber warning has encroached further into the west midlands area and nearer to us. if it gets bad i will sleep with the children downstairs.

RedToothBrush · 12/02/2014 17:25

So not only is the M6 shut at Knutsford (with traffic being diverted over Barton Bridge at the moment) but now the A50 at Holmes Chapel is closed in both directions due to a fallen tree.

So if you are trying to get south/north by car tonight around the around, my advice would be JUST DON'T BOTHER. Find a nice cheap warm hotel and hope that the lights don't go out (ours have been flickering in the last half an hour)

From experience I imagine travelling times north and south of Warrington will be at least 2 - 3 hours (instead of the usual 20mins). I do not envy anyone out there.

MillyBlodyn · 12/02/2014 17:25

Where are you Glad I'm near Caernarfon ?

sewingandcakes · 12/02/2014 17:26

Millyblodyn I hope you are safe.

mrsquagmire · 12/02/2014 17:26

Staffs-Shropshire border. We had the rain & wind and then the sun & now we're having very strong gusts which are making my house creak alarmingly. Will be glad when this is over (I know there's more on the way).

SlowlorisIncognito · 12/02/2014 17:27

All quiet here (SE cornwall) again after a brief thunderstorm. Really hope that's the last of it for today!

MillyBlodyn · 12/02/2014 17:29

Thank you safe. It's very scary and were just waiting it out in the hope that it stops by 9.00 pm. Snow on the mountains opposit. At least we have a roaring fire.

bobbinogs · 12/02/2014 17:29

Thankyou, train on time, I think I'm
Not going to risknthe drive, might try and get a train to
Blackburn and Clitheroe, or just sit in preston for a while! Any developments let me know
