we had such a nice sunny dry day here (se), but it wa interesting that the pavements didn't dry at all. the ground is just so water logged.
has just started raining. luckily we are up the hill from the river.

good luck to all of you, hope it will not be as bad as the beebs said in the news.
stay safe

SpottyTeacakes · 03/01/2014 06:31

Road to work is closed ffs. My only way round is literally through a track in the woods Hmm stupid floods Sad

LostInWales · 03/01/2014 07:58

Interactive wave height map I can't be the only person who loves this kind of thing can I?

Can you just stay at home Spotty? Roads here ok so far that I can see but we are waiting on high tide, we have a flood warning for our road. Eeek.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/01/2014 08:44

Hope everyone is ok this morning.

GloriaSmud · 03/01/2014 08:57

Guardian's live blog on flooding/disruption is here.

Hope everyone keeps safe.

GloriaSmud · 03/01/2014 09:01

Film here of the huge waves Newquay had earlier Shock

Was woken at 4.30am by a fantastic thunder storm (trouble is it woke the dog up and he continued to cry for several hours), thunder was very close followed by very heavy rain (maybe hail as it was very loud). The dog is now very happy as the fence is even more damaged and he has worked out he can get into the neighbours garden [grr].

Dh is about to go out to work and has to cross over the river (via a bridge that is likely to be flooded), we shall see if he can get out, a bit worried as he will be in a high sided van and they give more strong winds.

Hope everyone is ok and staying safe xx

I think its not been quite as bad as some of the predictions. I'm a bit worried that Paterson's extreme weather warning may cause people to miss the next warnings as the wind/rain themselves have not been extreme. Timing has been unfortunate with the high tides and yes they have been dangerous, but what hyperbole is he going to use for an extreme situation?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/01/2014 09:27

Estofex have issued an interesting Level 1 foreecast for today and overnight.

A little good news - from Wednesday things look less extreme - unsettled with some rain but not stormy. Maybe a change to colder next weekend with the risk of snow increasing. I hope things dry out before then otherwise ice in various forms could be our next issue.

DameDeepRedBetty · 03/01/2014 10:39

Marlborough Wilts, We started sunny this morning but have just had one of the biggest hailstorms I've seen for a few years.

mankyscotslass · 03/01/2014 11:02

I think we are due to escape the worst of the weather here - we had heavy rain overnight (it woke DS1), but so far this moring we have just had a mix of rain/sun - and the rain has not been that heavy.

The sky has just gone very dark though, so I think we are in for a downpour again

moominleigh94 · 03/01/2014 11:18

All my family are trapped by the flooding, the roads are closed either side and no way out. Caravan sites are underwater, businesses are underwater - a lot of the pictures the news websites are tweeting ATM of businesses and restaurants underwater are from my hometown. Lots of damage on the promenade and everyone being evacuated into a rest centre. So worried for them all Sad that's in Barmouth.

Glad I came back up to Wrexham the other day, it's a bit miserable and rainy but at least I'm here in case we need hospital (I'm pregnant) - that's one of the things my family said to me this morning when I told them I wished I was there with them, and I suppose they've got a point.

I'm near Plymouth, and there have been heavy hail showers on and off today joined with high gusts of wind mixed with periods of calm. I've just come across the Tamar bridge and it is shut to high sided vehichles and motorbikes atm, and the middle lane is shut too, with plans to possibly shut more if the winds get a bit more sustained apparently.

Luckily I live on a hill, so no flooding, although my neighbour's roof has been damaged by winds.

Yesterday I was in Seaton and it was already very flooded by the beach. I hope the homes and businesses there are ok, as is the road which was partially lost in a landslide earlier this year. Hopefully everyone is ok, and the tide tonight won't be too bad. I know Looe flooded this morning, and is probably going to flood this evening too. They have had a really bad year of it weatherwise :(

What is going on with this weather? Black skies, hail, thunder and lightning.

10 minutes later:white clouds, blue skies and sunshine.

20 minutes later: black skies, heavy rain and wind.

Is there more of this to come?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/01/2014 13:10

We just had a thunderstorm too with an impressive gust front and hail. I think it is going to be one of the themes of the day I'm afraid. Ties in well with the estofex forecast. I'll just check TORRO's.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/01/2014 13:11

Nothing from TORRO, but it is run by volunteers who may be on holiday at present.

SlowlorisIncognito · 03/01/2014 13:15

I think the bridge will stay open, but might go down to only one lane in each direction as has been happening a lot during the stormy weather. While this is good in that it's passable, it does obviously slow traffic down a lot. It's mostly calm though with just occasional periods of high winds and hail so a lot better than it could be.

That's rubbish about Looe, I hope everyone there is ok and there are no landslides. Hopefully the high tides over the weekend are not as bad as currently expected.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/01/2014 13:16

If you are next to the welsh coast (esp Holyhead) and can be very very safe while looking, reports of waterspouts forming.

NoWayNoHow · 03/01/2014 13:32

I'm in North Surrey and we had a MASSIVE squall about half an hour ago - howling wind, torrential rain, thunder and lightning - water pouring in through the closed windows of our office!! (really old building).

Now, it's sunny and still like nothing ever happened!!! Confused

PeteCampbellsRecedingHairline · 03/01/2014 13:33

A petrol station in my town has been hit by lightning. The front door was struck and the roof over the pumps has been dislodged. Link here

Poor people in there must have been terrified. Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/01/2014 13:35

Poor sods!!!! That would be very scary.
I'm supposed to be working today but I just cannot concentrate.
