Fence has gone Hmm

digerd · 30/12/2013 13:15

I had to go out to corner shop at 11am and it was horrible. Wet and gusty - nearly took off with my umbrella and at one point it stopped me and then nearly threw me sidewaysConfused. Was so relieved to get back indoors .

digerd · 30/12/2013 13:34

That is strange. The sun is shining nowSmile

magimedi · 30/12/2013 13:41

Just had a huge squall here & now the sun has come out - but not for long I reckon.

Cindy34 · 30/12/2013 14:27

Sunshine - lucky you, it has been raining here all day. On the plus side, its not heavy snow. Though a light dusting of snow would be nicer than rain.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 30/12/2013 18:17

more warnings
including for heavy rain. Sorry all. Been out for the day and need to catch up with myself a bit.

20thCgirl - it doesnt look like a very nice trip at all with lots of heavy rain and surface flooding. We were out and about in some of the flood hit areas today and minor roads were Not Fun. However winds wise, gusting to 40-50mph for most of your journey. Looks like you miss the worst winds in the south which are due to be in the morning in the south west (gusting to 60 maybe 70mph near the coast) this high wind transfers to the Se through the early afternoon.

Just marking place in thread.

So an update....

Todays rain should clear out for most this afternoon, only to be replaced with the next weather system. I'm afraid the met office warnings for heavy rain are fully justified. Tomorrow is going to be dire for all of England and Wales and later Scotland. Once again very windy everywhere with gales through the south coast to about 60mph or so. Take care travelling, I'm hearing of trees coming down in quite low wind speeds due to being weakened already and saturated ground.

If you are in the SW, in an area prone to flooding and dont yet have sandbags then I would urge you to obtain them. Also its sensible to clear out the gutter in the road if you can - if your council are anything like ours they will have done sod all this last couple of weeks.

Unfortunately it doesnt end there. Thursday is ok, then late thursday night more rain moves in. Not too heavy in general on Friday but it wont help the situation.

Saturday more heavy rain at times and windy. Watch out for ice in the early hours of Sunday, especially in central areas and northern areas. Maybe some snow for parts of Scotland and northern England through Saturday night.

Sunday night into Monday/Tuesday - another storm. Not as bad as we've seen and the evolution still differs a little between models. But something to keep an eye on.

Some hints of a bit of a cool down second week of Jan bringing the risk of snow instead of rain further south. Still very unsettled though.

Central southern areas too need to be prepared for flooding, as I think do areas bordering the Thames. Possibly some very high rain totals by early next week.

Is there any chance of snow in the south east during January?

magimedi · 31/12/2013 12:18

Flowers OYMLK & Happy New Year to you.

Yours is the first forecast I look for every day.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 31/12/2013 12:42

:) Thank you magimedi - thats really kind of you.

hercules - not in the forecast models that I can see but they only go to mid month and I'm not one for guessing.

Thanks as usual Kitten for all your work :)

Similar to Twentieth - my parents are due to drive from Essex to Plymouth so may as well just get on with it. Not sure if he's right in his approach or not.
I do want them to head off as we've had guests for ages now and I want the house back but don't know whether I should persuade him not to drive tomorrow. Any thoughts?

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 31/12/2013 15:17

You are welcome JKS. I think the main problem will be the heavy rain, though as i said before the high winds may take out the odd weakened treee here and there. I'd suggest to them that they stick to main roads and take it very easy.

We've been really lucky and missed the worst of the bad weather.Today was forecast high winds and torrential rain, but it there wasn't even a breeze, was very still and we had a light bit of drizzle for half an hour.DD2 went drag hunting and had a lovely day,if we'd believed the forecast we wouldn't have gone.DH was about 15 miles away and had heavy rain.It is very odd!

hercules1 · 31/12/2013 16:53

Thanks , kitten

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 31/12/2013 17:41

You were fortunate Mirage, just goes to show!
