Not too bad here (Bucks). A few gusts of wind but quite still in between.

denialandpanic · 23/12/2013 14:41

The worst that clobbered me was a bit of bamboo Grin. Need to warm up a bit and dry off.

Kate, leave it as late as you can, might be still a bit wild Manchester way but hopefully calmer by the time you get down to the south.

Seems to be a squall line developing at the back of this: radar
Going to get a lot windier for those in the way of that.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 15:37

And as you might expect with a radar showing a broken squall line like that now TORRO have issued a tornado watch covering both this squall line and the frontal wave that will cross tonight.

Wild and woolly in north Bucks, wind got up around midday and squally rain accompanying it. Set up my new digital weather station which seems to think the indoor temp is 25c; I don't think so (user teething troubles).

youarewinning · 23/12/2013 16:37

Fareham area in Southern Hampshire. Bloody awful here. Localised flooding and trees down in various places. I actually was avoiding wheelie bins when I drove to my parents to deliver Xmas gifts.
Luckily dad was in earlier than planned because quite rightly I decided driving this in the dark would be stupid when not actually absolutely necessary.

pepperrabbit · 23/12/2013 16:38

Is the squall line the purple bit coming across the middle north/south ish?

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 16:42

Thats the one pepper.

latest GFS has tightened the pressure gradient even further for scotland through tomorrow and sadly into the first part of Christmas day too. I think there may be more wide spread gusts of 80mph up there in the amber warning area, with the usual ridiculous gusts in the Cairngorms.

It has moved friday's storm further north, taking the south out of the firing line but looking very nasty indeed once again in Scotland with similar gusts to tomorrow unfortunately. It may well change and come south again, so its something to keep an eye on for us all.

Its followed in quick succession by a little low on Sunday and one on New Years eve, both need to be watched.

All trains from Euston reported to be currently suspended.

Lots of royal parks being closed early due to the weather in London (would you be able to see much at night anyway?)

We arrived in Kent safe and sound by 1pm. It is very wild and windy out tonight - but nothing extreme. We are just deciding who is going to brace the fish and chip shop on the seafront.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 17:03

Seafront? Report back!! Grin but go soon as the first squall front will be with you in about an hour or so.

TheGhostOfPortoPast · 23/12/2013 17:09

Actually I have just been hanging out the kitchen door for a fag some fresh air, and the wind is really picking up. It's raining but not THAT hard. Well send to chippy soonish. We are only 2 roads back from the sea.

TheGreatHunt · 23/12/2013 17:13

verywindy and wet here in SE london but doesn;t feel too bad. however i think the winds will be peaking in a few hours?

scripsi · 23/12/2013 17:14

any thoughts on my neighbour who is due to be driving down to Devon (from Herts) at around 6am tomorrow? We are looking up forecasts. We have howling winds and heavy rain here at the moment.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 17:20

It will still be windy, but not as bonkers, but the rain will be starting to clear out. However if I were her, if she can, i'd wait until first light so that she can see any downed trees easily. There are a lot of reports of trees coming down now and the worst is yet to come.

OP posts:
OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 17:21

Greathunt the worst will be between approx 10/11pm and 3am.

Made it back from shop with dd and ds2. DD was overwhelmed by horizontal rain and wind so I was allowed to grab her. DH leaving work any minute so I have texted him to be careful as bits of wood are blowing around the village.

Trampoline went away months ago and the Tardis is solid enough so I think we will be okay though the bin might go. I will get DH to jam them in somewhere as someone's has already blown into the road.

TheGreatHunt · 23/12/2013 17:23

yes - just been checking. I looked at this (my nearest town) which indicates gusts of 70mph. REALLY?!

scripsi · 23/12/2013 17:24

Great idea Kitten. She will have DCs and dogs in the car (don't envy her!). A later start would certainly make most sense.

nannynick · 23/12/2013 17:25

Been fine here on eastern edge of Cairngorms national park. Snow earlier turned to rain.

Tightened pressure gradient - what does that mean, lots of wind?

Helpyourself · 23/12/2013 17:30

The fence between our drive and next door has blown down, blocking our drive. I'm hiding because I know NDN will suggest it was because revellers were swinging on it after DD1's party.
Fair enough, except a) the party was a year ago b) it's been pushed over by their bin and c) in dog proofing our garden we gifted them a £2000 fence in the back.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 17:33

Yup Greathunt - that looks rather likely.

nannynick - yes. Some are speculating gusts to 100mph, but I think 90mph is more realistic (except up high where there will be silly numbers!)

helpyourself, do they hold grudges much? Grin
