IIRC, one of the approach roads to the Dartford Tunnel was out of action anyway (subsidence following burst water main) so traffic had to use minor roads to get to it. If that closure is still in place, with the bridge shut too, I expect the traffic there is going to be very snarled indeed.

Getting windier here in Kent with more rain and rather ominously dark

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 12:36

your poor poor friend mummylin. nightmare crossing. It gets Envy if some sneezes on the wightlink boats.

Not too bad here (yet?) (E Midlands) but we've decided to postpone a journey to visit family. We might try tomorrow, or leave until after Christmas.

Loving the facebook and twitter updates from uk power saying to follow them for updates if there is a power cut
I would need power to be able to do that

No power = no internet.

ethelb · 23/12/2013 12:47

@darkesteyes keep your phone charged!

busylizzie76 · 23/12/2013 13:03

Hi,

wwyd in my situation.....I'm in kent and it is wet and wind at the moment, not too bad but simile to get worse as day/evening goes on. I am meant to be getting the train to London with my 2 DCs (6&7), my dsis, dniece and dm (in her 70s)....we're going to the theatre (finishes about 10.30pm) and the tickets were very expensive. We are worried about getting to London and not being able to get back....if they stop the trains!

Thoughts? Would you go?

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 13:09

I wouldnt go busylizzie, I think the trains might stop. Which train company are you with?

I have everything charging. We lose power very easily here and there are already a lot of reports of powercuts. I have my powercut box out of the loft and on standby.

Edith- I wouldnt plan it for the 27th/28th at present. Tomorrow would be a better day I think for you.

Footle- I'd leave it as late in the day as you can if you have to go.

Greater Anglia are saying no trains until at leat 10am tomorrow so it looks like we won't be heading off until Tuesday afternoon. Unless we made a dash for it now but I would rather wait than be stuck on a train behind a fallen down tree for four hours.

Its not a long journey (1h) but fingers crossed we make it by midnight on Christmas Eve. Anyone else travelling by train tomorrow (or planning to?!)

Darkesteyes · 23/12/2013 13:16

Keeping phone charged but its a cheap t mobile smartphone. All i can do is scroll down twitter and read the most recent ten messages. Cant actually tweet or comment on facebook and its a struggle to get MN at all.
I love how these companies assume we have all got state of the art iphones.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 13:22

darkest - I have no idea why we lose mobile internet when the power goes out - unless the local mast runs on the same power supply. Very irritating.

Seconded Yes you are Kitten Thankyou Thanks

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 13:50

Footle - very practising - just an obsessed amateur, which is why I put out a lot of disclaimers about following my advice, in case I get it wrong.

early warnings for friday over the entire UK.

Read a report that Fenchurch street is currently closed.

ElbowPrincess · 23/12/2013 14:01

Im on the east coast Scotland, whats in store for us?

sittingbythefairylights · 23/12/2013 14:02

Fingers crossed for me please - currently on a met line train. Seems bit wet outside, but no reports of delays yet. Normally first line to go down.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 14:03

will be back shortly, am off for a walk to admire the weather first hand (avoiding trees)

Following the weather updates avidly.

Have told parents to go north around the m25 as the Dartford crossing will be a nightmare. And to leave slightly later than planned to give everything time to recover from the night & hopefully the wind to die down a bit.

Brother also planning to fly from west Ireland to Heathrow tomorrow lunchtime, bets on being delayed??

Do we have any links for Irish weather as the Met Office doesn't seem to include it.

Do hope no-one gets hurt so close to Christmas, seems worse somehow.

HerdyTheRedNosedHerdwick · 23/12/2013 14:09

It's turned particularly unpleasant here - rural south Cheshire- in the last hour. It's far from the worst I've seen since I've lived here, but it's not nice and I'm glad I don't have to go out.

Anyone wondering about Manchester Airport, at the moment flights are leaving but take off and landing volume has been reduced, so a lot of planes are somewhat delayed. There have been a couple of inbound diversions.

EdithWeston · 23/12/2013 14:11

Thanks Kitten - we're currently planning on tomorrow morning, unless something strange happens. And instead of driving, this afternoon I'm baking (my silver lining to these clouds - and I hope everyone else is OK).

kateecass · 23/12/2013 14:26

Damn I've just seen this!! Am supposed to be going from Manchester to North Hants tomorrow am until Friday. Should we leave boxing day evening instead? I see there are weather warnings for whole of UK for Friday.

upjacobscreekwithoutapaddle · 23/12/2013 14:28

Well, as you predicted the other day kitten it is indeed hell en route to Somerset from Herts. Unfortunately we had to leave at the worst possible time! In traffic by Stonehenge at the moment. Torrential rain, very strong gusts and at some points very little visibility. So pleased Dh driving and doing a stellar job.looking forward to a roaring fire and wine later!

JKSLtd · 23/12/2013 14:31

Oh dear Jacobs that's bad - i've been stuck on that stretch before in rain. It's so long and tedious.
