Bournemouth calling (hi mummylin) - wet here and gusty but nothing too bad. Have promised to wake ds (7) if it gets blowy around 2am!

signet · 27/10/2013 22:10

BadRoly, I'm in Reading. Nothing much to mention here other than some slightly heavier than usual rain.

TheRedRabbit · 27/10/2013 22:10

I have a stupid question to ask...what causes trains not to run when there is stormy weather? Can they literally be blown off the tracks? Or is it because of the overhead power cables?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/10/2013 22:11

its cos of trees on the line mostly i think.

West Sussex here. Been raining for a while now but suddenly got abit blustery!

Been following this thread since yesterday and DH is getting somewhat annoyed with my updates :)

Hes not looking forward to his commute to London in the morning though. Looks like it will be a nightmare with all the canceled trains. Understandable but If he doesn't go in, he doesnt get paid.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 27/10/2013 22:12

Trees blowing onto tracks, I would think, as well as the power cable thing.

blankslate · 27/10/2013 22:13

Yes the story that has been on the news this evening.

Well the rain has got heavier here, but from what I can see, it won't be until that passes in the early hours that will will get the strong winds.

ChilliJo · 27/10/2013 22:13

There's been a couple of major gusts which have resulted in banging noises of unknown origin. I too have promised my 6yo DS that I will wake him if it gets interesting. I just need to persuade DH to let me keep the bedroom window open tonight Hmm

SimLondon · 27/10/2013 22:15

TheRedRabbit - i think it's because they are concerned about fallen branches etc on the track - after the storm has finished the tracks are inspected to make sure there are no blocking obstructions, no-one wants a high speed train to hit anything.

Very calm and quiet here in Essex but im concerned, we live in an old property with some very old trees, an old cracked chimney stack and a couple of old sheds.

kaleysmiley · 27/10/2013 22:15

awhhh my poor lil man who has been excited all day has just fallen asleep in his tent on the floor - and then the rain begins lol

MuffCakes · 27/10/2013 22:16

Will we have thunder and lightning?

clam · 27/10/2013 22:16

I'm in West Herts and it is eerily quiet and calm here at the moment. Light rain, but not a puff of wind.

I'm guessing it won't last!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/10/2013 22:17

muff - almost certainly not.

I'm off to bed, but I may be back in the middle of the night!

Stansted airport and rain has got heavy last 30 mins pretty much given that main road at bottom of mine will flood even without the wind

nowwearefour · 27/10/2013 22:18

What are the chances of me making it from reading to Plymouth tomorrow on the train with two dds to see their cousins?

MuffCakes · 27/10/2013 22:18

thanks kitten

QuintsHollow · 27/10/2013 22:18

Do you reckon Gatwick will be fully functioning on Tuesday???

cloudskitchen · 27/10/2013 22:18

Night. Thanks for all the great updates. I have become a weather obsessive Grin

ChippingInNeedsANYFUCKER · 27/10/2013 22:19

Evening OYBBK :) Any idea how bad it's going to get here and what time it might start? The neighbours on the shared terrace have all manner of crap outside still and I'm wondering if it's going to be worth me kicking up a fuss about it or not Confused OR tell me to 'do one' it rather depends on if they have been rowing or not and given it's a day ending in y, the chances are that they have!

I've not long been home - it's tipping down and main road was deep deep puddles either side - single car down the middle style.

Going to work tomorrow is going to be interesting - it's pretty much tree lined all the way.

youarewinning · 27/10/2013 22:20

clouds that was some thunderstorm Grin And thanks to OYBBK I now know it's because we were in the middle of 3 storms - hence why a tornado formed.

SunshineSuperNova · 27/10/2013 22:20

Surrey here, not far from Sussex. Now tipping with rain and it's definitely getting blowier outside.

ChippingInNeedsANYFUCKER · 27/10/2013 22:22

x-posted.

It took me five minutes to stop laughing at the concept of you going to sleep - you know it's not going to happen Grin

Antidote · 27/10/2013 22:22

Wind just picked up big style on Devon/Cornwall border, south east Cornwall.

PowerPants · 27/10/2013 22:22

Hi chillyjoe (I'm in Poole, but it's the same thing really).

Getting gustier here, definitely.

PowerPants · 27/10/2013 22:23

Also lots of police sirens all of a sudden.
