Thank you OYBBK for the updates :)

Meglet · 27/10/2013 18:11

susie as it's only hours away I think it's safe to say the Met office do know what they're talking about. Better everyone lies low for a few hours while it passes than venture out and people get hurt. The fewer people out the better, and the less mess for the authorities and emergency services to clear up.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/10/2013 18:14

to the poster about Sweden (sorry, lost your post) I'm afraid I don't know cos I can't see it on the chart that matters at the moment - it doesnt stretch out that far.

The trains won't run anyway so best to let people know in advance.Do you fancy being on a train that hits a tree at 80 mph? I don't

Reastie · 27/10/2013 18:16

DD and DH been out kite flying in the garden this afternoon. Apparently they've never had such good kite flying weather before :)

Continued Thanks to OYBBK.

Ghosts - high degree of uncertainty for Lincolnshire. If the storm goes more northerly then you could have a bit of nastier spell of wind as the storm exits the uk.

Agree with Meglet. The main aim tomorrow morning should be to keep things clear while the situation is assessed.

Lots of trees have come down in places today with gusts of only 40mph or so. We've not had a good gale in the south for a few years and it means that trees are going to come down more easily.

What does "be prepared for gusts of 60-70mph, locally 80mph or more" mean? Local to what? Confused

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/10/2013 18:18

you are welcome reastie and marbles and anyone i've missed!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/10/2013 18:20

giraffe - its down to local topography - hills, valleys, rivers etc make a big difference to how wind flows. The met office can't really pick things out to such a high resolution. Also, its possible that there may be severe gusts embedded in the storm - they won't get everywhere.

Anyone else going to unplug electrical stuff to protect against surges?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/10/2013 18:21

hadnt thought about surges - I do whenever we get an electrically active storm. At the moment I'm busy charging things!

Thank you for answering my q from earlier!

TheGhostsAndGhoulsOfHitchhikin · 27/10/2013 18:22

Thank you Thanks

flootshoot · 27/10/2013 18:22

bluesprite isn't it half term in Berkshire?

BeedlesPineNeedles · 27/10/2013 18:23

OYBBK oh no has Sweden fallen off the edge of the world Shock
Thanks anyway, I don't think we're due to get the stormy weather until tomorrow afternoon evening, so the forecasters here have plenty of time to update.

sittinginthesun · 27/10/2013 18:25

Lurking with interest - my DH (who thinks I spend far too much time on Mumsnet, and pretends to have very little interest in it) has been asking me to check if OYBK had a thread running as he trusts you far more than the Met Office.

We're in Herts, lots of trees around us, so that's my main worry. Not a lot I can do about that though...

noblegiraffe · 27/10/2013 18:25

Thanks kitten

Is that XCWeather site good? It says gusts of 50mph where I am at its worst, though I am in the amber zone. Does that mean we miss the worst of it, or is it being conservative? The BBC weather forecast doesn't mention strong winds at all!

sittinginthesun · 27/10/2013 18:26

oh, and our lights flickered a couple of minutes ago.

SmilesandSunshine · 27/10/2013 18:26

I'm thinking I am not going to see it get as bad as some places? I am in West Midlands, specifically Solihull area. Quite removed from the bulk area of the storm but it has been very wet and windy all day.

RemindMeWhatSleepIs · 27/10/2013 18:26

Thank you for the update OYBBK.

Phone and kindle charged. Torch and spare batteries found. Garden tidied.

Stay safe everyone!

bigwellyfucker · 27/10/2013 18:27

Just checking in from Norfolk, DH keeps telling me not to be so daft etc etc and yet I have found him this evening checking the batteries in the camping lantern and he has also secured all the bits and bobs in the garden - and checked every pane of secondary double glazing.

youarewinning · 27/10/2013 18:28

So it looks like they are certain we'll get some extreme weather tonight in Hampshire? Could be continuous winds between 40-60mph (gusts 60-80)?

I'm guessing even continuous winds of that level can do damage as been gusting close to 40 today and leaves, litter and trees branches etc are already strewn across the county!

Does the strength of the gusts of the frequency of gusts have a differing effect? Just thinking that there are people on FB etc saying but they're saying 60-70 now not 80-90. Surely 3 gusts at 80mph would do less damage than 60mph gusts every 10 minutes? (I know that's an unlikely scenario but wanted to try and explain what I was asking!)

iwantanafternoonnap · 27/10/2013 18:28

My friend is supposed to be flying to Canada at 11ish tomorrow not sure if its going to be safe enough for her to drive there let alone the flight out.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/10/2013 18:29

noble - its computer generated from one model which doesnt have enough resolution this close to the event. So I wouldnt pay an enormous amount of attention to it.

Sorry Beedles. Other models have it, but they don't have the same solution that the met office are clearly favouring at the moment.

noblegiraffe · 27/10/2013 18:32

Oh boo, I was pinning my hopes on the XCWeather forecast not being that bad!

Anyone know if my neighbour's plastic table goes airborne whether I can claim on their insurance instead of mine?
