Wind also seems to have dropped a little here, just outside Eastbourne.

Calm before the storm??

And it's nearly dark - I hate that early darkness.

digerd · 27/10/2013 16:59

Talking about sheds just reminded me to turn off the electric plugs incase the roof gets blown off and it rains.
It's almost dark now and only 5pmSad

WallaceWindsock · 27/10/2013 17:00

Wind picking up in N Cambs. Am washing and cooking incase power goes later. Do not want to be left with no clean knickers! Lots of trees near us which doesn't bode well.

BasicFish · 27/10/2013 17:02

Hmm. One of the 2 train companies I use to get into work has cancelled all services before 9am. The other one is still running at the moment, but may not if others are cancelling. Lovely!

ChubbyKitty · 27/10/2013 17:03

Very dark up here too. DP doesn't finish til 7 then has to walk back, he'll be okay though I'm sure. He will. Definitely not worried.

Someone also has fireworks. Even more to frighten the catHmm

Am a bit worried about power cuts - basically almost nothing useful will function without electricity e.g. boiler, gas fire (electric fan thingy), fish tank heater (will have to wrap in blanket). Have got heating on to to get house warm so fish don't get too cold Confused

ChubbyKitty · 27/10/2013 17:05

Wallace you've reminded me to finish my washing! Uniforms are dirty oops.

3bunnies · 27/10/2013 17:07

Darkness could be due to hour change, here it has been windy all day.

BasicFish · 27/10/2013 17:08

Much the same here, trees starting to whip around. Can see at least 7 big trees from the living room window alone. Might just close the curtains Grin

The neighbours just replaced their wobbly fence with a v sturdy one, but the fence at the back of our garden is very wobbly and part fell down in a spring wind, esate agents dragging it out and delayed repairs on the rest since then. We've secured the remainder as best we can but not looking hopeful atm.

digerd · 27/10/2013 17:09

My very old and wind battered pine tree right opposite me at the back always loses branches in storms. It did have another type of tree behind it, but that fell down years ago, so now even more exposed as has a large open field behind it and westerly winds come right at it from behind. Think it's high enough to fall across the narrow canal and hit my shed if uprooted. belongs to the council, I think as behind the narrow towpath. < fed up of worrying about tonight>

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/10/2013 17:11

Right.
From what I can gather after a quick whizz through the models, is that there isnt really a downgrade to the storm at present but it is going to be a case of play it by ear. NAE (which is a high res model) is still going for pretty nasty.

At the moment I'm estimating

South coast (esp east of IOW) 70-80mph.
Southern coastal counties 60-70mph
next row of counties up 50-60mph (perhaps stronger around East Anglian coastal counties as it exits.)

Peak wind times for most of us between 3am and 6am.

Keep an eye on met office warnings they will probably update them more frequently as we go through the night.

We may get some tornado watches pop up from TORRO from the back edge of the storm I'm trying to find out more but lost where I saw that (too much to look at!!)

Denmark look to really cop it.

Will talk about next weekends possible storm after this one has gone through!

MegGriffin · 27/10/2013 17:12

Our fence has been swaying slightly so DH has tried to reinforce it. I hope it's still there in the morning, we're in West Sussex.

TheGonnagle · 27/10/2013 17:13

The weather here, North Devon, was fun and blowy this morning on Saunton sands. Boring now, like the calm before the storm.
We're staying in an old house in Braunton with worryingwindows. DDriving back to Birmingham after the storm tomorrow, could be interesting.
Kind of excited for tonight, but not too much drama please.

PestoSpookissimos · 27/10/2013 17:14

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/10/2013 17:19

Jersey, I'm afraid it does look rough, I think you are looking at 80mph+ . sorry.
Are you as prepared as you can be?

OP posts:
iwantanafternoonnap · 27/10/2013 17:22

Bit blowy here in East Sussex laughed my socks off at the dog nearly being blown over when he cocked his leg on a plant Grin

Tried to secure the garden as best I could but with a 10 foot trampoline and a climbing frame I am a tad worried!

Rowgtfc72 · 27/10/2013 17:23

Gusty up here in Cleethorpes on the east coast. Local paper tells us to stay away from the seafront. No, really!?
