I'm keeping a pretty close eye on developments for Monday. some of the models (in particular gfs) are showing a deep low developing over England, with the majority of the gfs runs taking the worst of the wind over the south.

Massive if. But if the weather were to pan out as those models are suggesting it would be a damaging storm, especially given the trees still being in leaf. I'd keep an eye on the met office early warnings page and if they start warning about it then it would be a good weekend to tidy the garden before you lose your stuff Wink

I'll update as things become clearer.

Another thing i remember from the 1987 storm was my dad telling me about railway girders actually bending due to the winds - now i wonder if i should believe it!

AFingerofFudge · 26/10/2013 21:17

OYBBK now if only you had seen my post you could have diverted that storm............Halloween Grin

DameDeepRedBetty · 26/10/2013 21:19

noblegiraffe I remember 1987 and 1990 very well. 1987 peaked in the wee small hours, so although it was a mahoosive storm, thankfully most people were indoors. 1990 peaked midmorning, so although it was less intense, there were more deaths and injuries.

I was still an archaeologist in those days, and we were working on the old Winchester Castle Barracks site which had planning permission to be turned into posh flats and houses. A tree fell into Trench 2 during morning tea break - would obviously have seriously injured anyone in there if there had been anyone in there, so the supervisor called us all back in again, and we watched the wind gusts racing over the sheets of water on the old parade ground from our base in the old mess hall for the next couple of hours. It was like watching speeded-up film, I've never seen anything quite like it before or since.

Wind is getting up here in Bournemouth

MsIngaFewmarbles · 26/10/2013 21:22

OYBBK any thoughts on my dilemma? Should I go and collect them?

I can remember waking up to the carnage in the 1987 storm. Stuff everywhere. A lot of chimneys down. Was sitting in the living room watching out the window when a tree across the road that obviously had very strong roots literally snapped in half. The trunk was still in the ground and the canopy was laying beside it. Surreal.

Mirage · 26/10/2013 21:40

Gusty wind and heavy rain in Leicestershire.

MsIngaFewmarbles · 26/10/2013 21:40

Travel, I'm not asking him to return them to me, just that he moves them away from the coast to his home.

changeforthebetter · 26/10/2013 21:41

Ok, garden made safe, including dodgy trampoline Blush

It is windy in South Yorks and it feels like "summat's brewin'" but that could be because I am glued to the magnificent OYBK's thread Grin

casacastille · 26/10/2013 21:43

I've put away the garden furniture and moved my plants in pots to a sheltered spot. Tidied the garage so I can put the car in it (lots of trees outside my house)

Just praying my DD's flight from England can land before it all kicks off tomorrow

CatAmongThePigeons · 26/10/2013 21:48

MsInga I am close to where your exh and DC are, Tor Bay is quite sheltered and actually misses a lot of the bad weather (as long as it's not easterly winds). All the seafront routes are closed and can be guarded to stop people getting to it.

I know it's not much but it's a little bit more info from a local.

CatAmongThePigeons · 26/10/2013 21:50

Also, it's all very hilly and most hotels/holiday camps are well away from the water front and have plenty of flood protection.

LostInWales · 26/10/2013 21:50

Umm, OYBBK, you know that knitting pattern chart that had DVPLG HURCN FORCE on it. Now it has HURCN FORCE in a little box right over where I live. Shock

CatAmongThePigeons · 26/10/2013 21:51

Last from me: wanted to add the hills stop a lot of the bad weather as it rushes over straight onto the sea.

ThoughtsPlease · 26/10/2013 21:54

LostinWales what site is the chart on? Thanks.

AChristmassyJerseySpud · 26/10/2013 21:55

wavesandsmiles

Which island are you?

I'm quite worried that you say we are getting the brunt....thats not what our lot are saying again they didn't even get 5 foot of snow right...

LostInWales · 26/10/2013 21:57

Hold on Thoughts, it was way ^^ up there somewhere, I'll try and find it again.

ThoughtsPlease · 26/10/2013 21:58

Ok thanks

4yoniD · 26/10/2013 21:58

Just wanted to pop in and say ..... WWWAHHHHHHHH! .... I'm in the CIs, and the house next to me has scaffolding, loose slates, wood, the lot. Only plus side is I don't have a trampoline, lol. If him next door trashes my car there is going to be murder.....

AChristmassyJerseySpud · 26/10/2013 21:58

Thanks greenapples i live on top of a hill.

Might be time to take the play house down and put it in the shed then :s

wantitallover · 26/10/2013 21:59

Currently got heavy winds. Very loud. In Kent too. On top of a flipping hill. Weather on BBC now

digerd · 26/10/2013 21:59

Hills are wonderful in every way, but mainly give shelter from winds.

Good that all access to the sea fronts are blocked but that will annoy your ex and disappoint DC, but at least keep them safe MsInga.

LayMizzRarb · 26/10/2013 22:00

I find it a little disturbing that adults say they are 'excited' by the weather that has been predicted. At it's fiercest, it could cause devastating damage; lives could be lost and the damage to homes and businesses could run into £££££££.
There will be people risking their lives to look after others. Firemen, coast guards, police, essential drivers, ambulance personnel. They will all have to drive through dreadful conditions dodging possible flying objects, as they were in the 1987 storm.
You are 'excited'. Really?

AChristmassyJerseySpud · 26/10/2013 22:00

4yoniD where are you?
