I'm keeping a pretty close eye on developments for Monday. some of the models (in particular gfs) are showing a deep low developing over England, with the majority of the gfs runs taking the worst of the wind over the south.

Massive if. But if the weather were to pan out as those models are suggesting it would be a damaging storm, especially given the trees still being in leaf. I'd keep an eye on the met office early warnings page and if they start warning about it then it would be a good weekend to tidy the garden before you lose your stuff Wink

I'll update as things become clearer.

Perhaps that's a good thing, people are safer in their beds.

LEMisafucker · 26/10/2013 20:15

We are supposed to be going to london tomorrow from the south east should we not go?

viperslast · 26/10/2013 20:26

I'd like to know what happened round here last night! There was quite a storm and people talking about a mini tornado?! Trees down and one woman sadly killed when one landed on her car. Is this connected to this storm or just a freak occurrence? I was 12 miles away and we got a bit of lightening, rain and a touch of wind, seems like it was very localised?

LEM you'll be fine tomorrow.

noble - theres a lot of night at this time of year!

Bruce - fret not too much yet. It will be blowy but for the moment it looks like you are out of the worst of it. I'm keeping an eye on your region and will update if I'm concerned.

I'm flying into London tomorrow and am now terrified :-(

Squiffyagain · 26/10/2013 20:34

And to think I paused before bringing the kids out to the Caribbean for half them because of the hurricane risk in Barbados!!

So, the plane that brings us home on Monday night flies over from Barbados on Sunday and crosses the Atlantic before (theoretically) landing at gatwick at 5.30am monday. Then it leaves gatwick at 10.00 to come back out.

That's simply not going to happen, is it? I can safely order another rum punch and hold the checkout? Cool.

Less cool is the thought of asking my dad to put our kune kune pigs inside the house at home for the duration (home is coastal Kent). My kitchen is going to be so trashed by the time I get home, even if the trees don't hit it.

OhYouWickedWickedWitch · 26/10/2013 20:36

uggly. tomorrow is fine. Will be pretty windy, but not bad windy.

squiffy - its not the best timing I have to say!

MsInga – what is it with men? (Generalising wildly, obviously.) If you look at my profile, you'll see the photos of the scaffolding over the house opposite to me. I'm a bit concerned; a visiting (female, if that's relevant) friend's opinion was that it would be a problem; yet DH's response was, well, meh, no worries. I wonder if some people (non-gender-specific) are great at dealing with problems when those problems are right there, but can't anticipate a possible problem in order to formulate a strategy should that problem arise.

Cod-psychology apart, your ex is definitely a pillock. I'd advise making a note of his casual attitude towards safety - authorities/experts of all kinds don't take kindly to children being put in potential danger.

youarewinning · 26/10/2013 20:41

I remember 87! I was 7yo and woke up to find my dads car had moved about 2 feet voluntarily!!! Still to this day we cannot fathom how and why!

youarewinning · 26/10/2013 20:41

Actually - I guess the why is a given Halloween Blush

oldsilver · 26/10/2013 20:43

This is Bristol calling..

I agree with all the warm comments, there were loads of people walking around with shorts and t-shirts today. The wind is picking up out there at the moment. All of next door's windchimes are going like billy-o I took all mine down

I remember 1987, I was working near an airport at the time - so very flat. Saw huge packing crates go down the roads like bits of paper floating along. I also had to phone lots of our workers that we had abroad to inform them that they'd lost roofs Sad Though coming across the Downs on a double decker bus, on the top deck, was an interesting experience - not felt seasick on a bus before or since, like that day.

viperslast · 26/10/2013 20:49

Pm sent, hoping I got your name right!

alcibiades · 26/10/2013 20:56

Just adding a couple of links that might be interesting, in terms of getting an easy overview as the storm tracks through.

One is a link that Kitten/Witch has already posted:

www.yr.no/satellitt/europa_animasjon.html

That one shows the clouds over a wider area than the MetOffice images, so gives a visual indication of the weather patterns as they approach the UK.

Another one is:

www.flightradar24.com

which shows the pattern of incoming and outgoing flights. Airports tend to be conservative when there is bad weather approaching. They have to plan ahead and divert aircraft to other airports, because they must not reach maximum capacity for landed aircraft in case they have to cope with any emergency landing that can't divert.

digerd · 26/10/2013 21:01

I was living abroad in 1987 so didn't experience it , but heard from relatives in SE UK that they woke up to the destruction as happened in the night and was very scary making their way to work in the morning.

This storm is not expected to be anywhere near as bad due the specific and unusal circumstances in 1987.

OMG alcibiades, that looks dangerous :(

Still no reply, I may have to go and collect them tomorrow.

There is a humungous tree across the road from us that would easily reach our house if it fell in the 'right' direction. We have been here for ages and judging by the state of the house/garden in general I would assume the owner has never had work done on it.

1leggedwobbler · 26/10/2013 21:06

I have loved hearing posts from those in the Channel Isles. Being based on the IOM I know what it feels like to get whacked by a storm no one else seems to be paying attention too, although here that isnt the case. CI ladies I'm following every move & you are in my thoughts xxx

AFingerofFudge · 26/10/2013 21:09

Hi OYBBK - I started a thread last Tuesday about us going down to Kent during half term - in it I said:
"Any advice gratefully received! Oh, and if OYBBK is around - could you sort some nice weather out for us pleeeeease! "

Hmm, hadn't really thought of storms , but just wondering- we were thinking of going to Broadstairs on Monday - bad idea?! Smile

Oh I remember the 1987 storm in Kent.

I was woken by the guttering above my bedroom window ripping off and smacking into my window on its way down. We couldn't get out of our street as dozens of trees further up had fallen into the road. We got a day off school and we spent it wandering the town and lanes around our house marvelling at the staggering amount of damage.

I'm in Brittany now, bracing for the worst!

OhYouWickedWickedWitch · 26/10/2013 21:13

casa. sensible to be prepared.

am going to spend a bit of time with family. Back later after the next gfs update :)

Best I attempt operation garden declutter ASAP....
