I'm keeping a pretty close eye on developments for Monday. some of the models (in particular gfs) are showing a deep low developing over England, with the majority of the gfs runs taking the worst of the wind over the south.

Massive if. But if the weather were to pan out as those models are suggesting it would be a damaging storm, especially given the trees still being in leaf. I'd keep an eye on the met office early warnings page and if they start warning about it then it would be a good weekend to tidy the garden before you lose your stuff Wink

I'll update as things become clearer.

I think I should get out more because im actually quite excited about this.
Bought some candles today (you never know) keeping phone and laptop charge full and put freezer on fast freeze so everythings a bit extra frozen solid incase powers off a while. I remember 87 I was 7 and it was the first time I'd known a power cut it lasted 2 days.

Umm can someone tell me what tomorrow will be like in terms of rain? My MO app isn't working and I really want to go pumpkin picking with dd Grin in godalming (Surrey)

Also I'm currently stuck on a train because of a fallen tree in Liss. Ffs the storm hasn't even hit yet!

OhYouWickedWickedWitch · 26/10/2013 19:38

Jersey at the moment does look like it will really get the brunt.
The SEand central southern coasts looks pretty nasty too. See post at 17:35 :)

Well it's definitely picking up in the Norfolk Fens , and we're used to the wind here . Have been out and bought lots of torches and light sticks , topped up on the tins of soup , milk , and refilled the log store by the house from the big wood house . New gas bottle has been connected , cars fuelled up , horses and dogs have got feed , and I don't need to go anywhere till Tuesday morning . DH is coming home from the West Country tomorrow evening , so we're pretty prepared if it all goes wrong . That said , we're used to power cuts as we tend to get a lot this time of year , because the geese flying in from Russia are notoriously bad at landing at the bird reserve, and they clip the power lines at least once or twice a week !

Oh goodness, I'm supposed to be driving from Brighton to Tunbridge Wells for DD2's ski course. I do hope it gets cancelled on safety grounds

MsIngaFewmarbles · 26/10/2013 19:48

posted too soon, stupid phone!

I've just text exH and asked him to bring the DDs back tomorrow morning, not necessarily to my house just Bristol. So far no reply.

Am I over-reacting? I just got very nervous when I was talking to him yesterday and mentioned the storms and he said, 'ah no problems, we can go and watch the big waves'.

nannynick · 26/10/2013 19:51

In 87 I was on an school outdoor activity week, that particular night I was in a bivi bag (plastic bag which goes over sleeping bag) laying on the side of a mountain in North Wales, not that far from Barmouth. Bit windy but fine. Returned home to south London to hear that lots of trees had fallen down.

Wonder if this storm will have a similar effect in south London. These days I'm in Surrey/Berks border area, so wonder what it will be like here.

HesterShaw · 26/10/2013 19:53

Kent and Sussex look windier than Cornwall! Shock

Have warned my PIL. They have an awful lot of stuff to blow around.

OhYouWickedWickedWitch · 26/10/2013 19:54

I must confess I love a good stormGrin....and yes I can clearly remember 1987! I was in the Army at the time and we had a Regimental Dinner Night. At about 23.00 I took my dog out (he'd been 'trapped' in my room all evening) and it was eerily calm and very mild. We thought nothing of it, ........then consumed a few more beverages and went to bed. As you can imagine we all slept very wellGrin, imagine our surprise on looking outside in the morning to find fallen trees everywhere (we heard nothingBlush). A colleague woke to find a tree fallen against his window.....

OhYouWickedWickedWitch · 26/10/2013 20:02

marbles - he would be a bit of a wombat to take them out to watch the waves. If he can be trusted to keep them safe that's one thing, but he shouldnt be travelling with them Monday really.

You're all so organised! I'm generally a very organised sort of person but I haven't (yet) been out buying 'emergency' food/candles etc......

MsIngaFewmarbles · 26/10/2013 20:06

They are meant to be coming back on Monday, he says they can follow the storm. God he's such a pillock.

SpookyTeacakes · 26/10/2013 20:08

Thank you Smile I'm super excited. Going on a tractor ride!

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 26/10/2013 20:08

We've got everything in from the garden that might possibly move. Supposed to be taking the dc's out on Monday but will probably cancel if it looks bad when we wake up. Hoping dh won't drive to work, he's in a van which when empty is quite likely to be blown over.

MsIngaFewmarbles · 26/10/2013 20:09

Twister is on ITV2 now Grin

noblegiraffe · 26/10/2013 20:10

Why do these storms always happen at night?

SpookyTeacakes · 26/10/2013 20:12

Isn't it something to do with the moon? clueless Grin

BruceWillisLovesMe · 26/10/2013 20:12

Is there any info about Cheshire? I'm about 30 miles north from the edge of the orange patch on the met website map thing. Does this mean I should worry or not? I'm trying not to google and scare myself because I don't cope well with this kind of stuff!
