Thunderstorm potential

Quick heads up, will try to elaborate later, but today is a bit bonkers. Looks like there is potential for some severe thunderstorms tonight/tomorrow. I'll be honest and say that I've not looked at this myself yet have nicked it off a very reputable forum Tomorrows potential depends on what happens tonight - how much cloud cover is left over as we need the sun to get things going.

Will try and be more specific later,

Gloria, is there a chance of you having a quick survey of your local area just to see if there is any damage please.

latest radar shows up the two storm systems nice.y. I wonder if the midlands one is an MCS. To my very amateur eyes it loos like it.

The clouds can't seem to make up their mind about which way to travel either. Not very good with direction but they appear to be traveling in one direction and then it suddenly changes! The sun is starting to peek through now though Confused

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 28/06/2012 14:35

Read on another site that 3.5" sized hail has been 'officially' recorded. Very large indeed ( and not juSt by uk standards either)

weather report from w mids.

muggy this morning, getting darker.

12 noon. first sight of dark clouds out towards the west of the city, probably over daughters school! (not able to tell if thundering due to traffic noise)

12 15-1pm continuous rumbling of thunder no lightening observed... and very black clouds to the westand north west of the city centre.

1pm goes very blackoutside, postie reports that streetlights have come on
1.10pm rain comes in from the west... watched it approaching rapidly.. 10 seconds of light rain... then bucketsfull, streaming off rooftops. no hail in the city centre. a few louderr claps of thunder. unable to hear if continuous rumbling is continuing due to location

now brightened up light grey clouds and high humidity.

clouds... edge of cloud/light line with 3 close together sticky out bits either down or out towards edge of cloud.

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 28/06/2012 14:44

Coventry Susan? Have just started a thread for the damage there news seems like a tescos has been damaged. Thank you for your report. The sticky down bits - can you see any rotation in them? What are the clouds like for which they dangle?

GloriaSmud · 28/06/2012 14:47

Will do.
Think I'm off and going to leave early for the school run.

FourThousandHoles · 28/06/2012 14:50

Just about to leave to collect dd1 from school and it's getting REALLY REALLY dark out there - v warm & muggy. The Olympic torch isn't to far away from here today (was here yesterday) and has been delayed because of lightning. Mate is up near Lincoln and has just driven through a belter of a storm.

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 28/06/2012 14:54

Fourthousand, are you walking? Don't get caught in any of the hailstorms, some of the reports are of hail that could do proper injury.

KittenundermyHeels · 28/06/2012 15:32

OYBBK have sent you a pm

KittenundermyHeels · 28/06/2012 15:34

Clouds have changed direction again and its is starting to get darker. Hope we don't get anymore hail. :(

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 28/06/2012 15:35

Kitten - thank you, see my pm back :)

27 c here and 66percent humidity. Blue skies, but with hazy clouds.

we are under thick fog and cloud here in Dundee, could do with it all going away its so dark, kids finished school at lunchtime, happy holidays here!!

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 28/06/2012 15:41

Lol at happy holidays. How long are they off for?

OP posts:
Ohyoubadbadkitten · 28/06/2012 15:42

Kitten, did you see the hail warning?

OP posts:
KittenundermyHeels · 28/06/2012 16:04

No! Another one? Bloody weather, getting fed up of it even though its really quite fascinating. Just had another bonkers downpour, just as I decided to risk walking to the shop 2 mins away. I am drenched now and wrapped in a towel. I may as well have gone in the shower fully clothed. No hail though!

mankyscotslass · 28/06/2012 16:18

we had a downpour at around 11 that lasted 10 minutes, then it dried up and has alternated between overcast and glorious sunshine since.

It's boiling hot and humid here. No storms!

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 28/06/2012 16:28

It's been extended to 8pm but I think the worst is out of your area now.

OP posts:
FourThousandHoles · 28/06/2012 16:50

storm has been and gone
air no clearer
I have a banging headache that won't bugger off

OYBBK, drive most of the way and walk the last bit - 3.5 miles each way. To the south was bright sunshine and to the north it was black as night. It started to rain as I was pulling back onto the drive - most unusual to make it home before the rain starts Grin

HauntedLittleLunatic · 28/06/2012 18:19

Have pm'd you.

Feeling my hailstones are inferior compared to some mentioned on the link.

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 28/06/2012 19:02

That was
Yucky Fourthousand!

Haunted, your hail wasn't inferior at all - it was def a decent size!

OP posts:
Ohyoubadbadkitten · 28/06/2012 19:06

Much less humid down south now.

OP posts:
Chaotica · 28/06/2012 19:10

Gloria - we had sand all over the car (and sandy sort of rain) this morning. Why?? (Pales into insignificance next to enormous hail stones though.)

hugglymugly · 28/06/2012 19:40

Humidex reached maximum of 35 degrees here in Hampshire. No precipitation of any kind - though it would have been nice to have had just a little storm to clear the air a bit.

Some of the pictures/film look pretty awful. It must have felt pretty scary in those places where it got so dark that it triggered the automatic sensors on street lighting.

I regularly look at www.yr.no/satellitt/europa_animasjon.html to see the cloud movements, to give me some idea of what's coming in from the Atlantic, but it was extraordinary to see the cloud systems associated with these storms just appear from nowhere. OYBBK - orographic lifting or something else?

Chaotica - the sand has been blown in from the Sahara. It does happen from time to time, but from reports I've read elsewhere, it's been very noticeable today.
