Lots of earthquakes recently. The webcam is here but typical, the weather's awful at the moment!

Just found this in the comment section from the blog~writer:

"The bridge over Múlakvísk river is gone according to Rúv. They are now evacuating Áftaver. It is dangerous going close to Múlakvísl due to poisons gases and risk of the flood increasing without any warning."

So it looks like something has happened overnight.

So that may not be bad weather on the webcam?

GloriaSmud · 09/07/2011 10:01

Yes that's right, especially as all the other Icelandic webcams show bright sunshine or cloudy but with good visibility!

Conflugenglugen · 09/07/2011 10:10

Yes, the comments on that blog link are very interesting to read. I wonder what's going to happen ...

GloriaSmud · 09/07/2011 14:59

Looks like something did happen. Update from the blog.

The bit of the IMO site that's translated into English, showing earthquakes around Katla seems to have gone down. Icelandic section is here.

hmm... interesting....

GloriaSmud · 09/07/2011 17:57

It is isn't it! And slightly scary that the blog~writer doesn't think it's over yet; just paused for the moment.
Weather seems to have cleared so a bit more can be seen on the webcam.
Some pictures here from the glacial flood. That must have been some powerful force to wash away a bridge. And this was from only a small eruption!

The Icelandic MO site is brilliant on volcanic and seismic activity here's the whole country map of activity over last 48 hours. The quakes are frequent (not particularly unusual), and not not strong.

Could something else have done for the problematic bridge? (Will keep watching this thread for updates - ash cloud at the start of the summer hols isn't the most enticing prospect).

GloriaSmud · 09/07/2011 19:14

Report from Icenews. Doesn't seem to be excited about it all as much as the blog!

Some pictures here of the changes at the glacier.

GloriaSmud you got there first this time. [hgrin]

I'm off to have a look at the pictures and links.

mankyscotslass · 09/07/2011 19:34

I've decided I am going to save like mad and have a trip to Iceland in the next couple of years, all this activity is fascinating.

And looking at the Icelandic MO Eyjafjallajokull, or rather the area areound it and the glacier has also had a few more earth tromors....but I don't know how to read them, and that may well be glacial movement causing the tremors...

mankyscotslass · 09/07/2011 19:48

Just realised I was looking at an old tremor map of Eyjafjallajokull, Blush

GloriaSmud · 09/07/2011 21:01

[hgrin] and oops!

DH's promised me a cruise to Iceland when he retires ~ only 20 years for me to wait then! I found this with P&O, and it takes in Dublin as well ~ another of my favourite cities!

Check out the excursions here, especially from Reykjavik.

went to Iceland in May half term for my 40th bday present to myself. It was awesome. Glacier, gysers, volcanoes, waterfalls... whats not to like! Highly recomend a visit.

GloriaSmud · 10/07/2011 08:47

Geogteach ~ you lucky thing! [henvy]

I think it will be at least a couple of years before we save enoigh to go, and DD is interested too.

Just looking at the Icelandic MO earthquake page, and there seem to have been a few more tremors in the last 4 hours, but not as many as before.

The webcam is obscured by what I think is low cloud....

GloriaSmud · 11/07/2011 20:33

Katla seems to be quiet~ish at the moment. Some debate on the Iceland blog whether there's a plume of steam or just cloud being seen on the webcam at the moment. The location would seem to match with where the latest tremors have been. And the blog~writer still doesn't think this is over yet.

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 11/07/2011 22:40

I've been watching that webcam, and also could not decide between steam or cloud!

I've got DD looking at all the webcams on Iceland too, she is becoming hooked.

GloriaSmud · 12/07/2011 09:53

I think it was a white plume rising from the middle of the picture. It's a bit cloudy/misty today so not much to see.
Update from the blog.

Some excellent footage here of the after~affects of the eruption/glacial flood.

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 12/07/2011 11:35

Hmm, the writer seems to feel that it this will lead to a full eruption. I suppose we just need to wait and see.

GloriaSmud · 12/07/2011 20:43

According to the blog, there seems to have been tremors at another volcano in the last few hours but it isn't Katla! Whole place seems to be rocking and rolling at the moment!

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 12/07/2011 21:47

I wonder whether this activity is realted to the recent eruption at the nearby Grímsvötn volcano?
