I don't think this will erupt for a while as I have no holidays booked till Sept!

We were stranded abroad when the first volcano went off last year (it erupted in the night before we were due to fly back so we were stuck in a lovely resort in the sunshine - such hell!) and the second eruption was while we were away in May this year.

I'm guessing the next one will be in September when I next go away!!

manky ~ someone mentions on the blog that it's interesting how much activity there's been, along with the rather scary thought that something might be happening between Katla and Vatnajokull, where Grimsvotn (sorry, I don't know how to do all those 'accent' thingys over the letters!) is, as in the possibility of a fissure eruption along the fault line.

Opus ~ Grin oh how you suffered! We'll ask the Icelandic volcanoes to delay any erupting until you're safely away!

I did wonder about the fussure rift possibility, I have read some facts on the 1783-1784 eruption along the Laki fissure, and I've struggled to get my head round the consequences of such an eruption in our modern world.

All we can do is wait and see I suppose....everything may go quiet!

mankyscotslass · 13/07/2011 11:30

Fussure? Fissure. Blush

GloriaSmud · 13/07/2011 14:07

LOL at fussure!
When people talk about the 1783 Laki eruption, the idea that it might happen again does seem to produce a 'not going there' and 'run away with fingers in ears, going la-la-la' response; it's just too scary to contemplate!

Been confirmed that what went on last night was a glacial flood from the Hamarin Volcano, under Vatnajokull.

Fairly quiet again at Katla but looks like there was a small eruption at Hamarinn.
Interesting how close it is to Grimsvotn.

Has something happened at Katla? looking at the webcam here

There is something off in the left hand corner of the screen as you look at it, but I am not sure if it's cloud or steam or an eruption??

GloriaSmud · 18/07/2011 09:09

Loads of earthquakes overnight at Katla.

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 18/07/2011 10:41

They seem to be getting excited about it on the blog.

Difficult to tell this morning whether it's steam or low lying cloud on the webcam. Confused

GloriaSmud · 18/07/2011 17:12

Yes they do!
(Am on holiday, using DHs phone and can't see the webcams atm but trying to keep an eye on things!)

Nothing much overnight, but Etna is rumbling!

mankyscotslass · 20/07/2011 08:02

More ice cauldrons and cracks on Katla - Icelandic news reporting the possibility of glacial outburts floods.

Suggestions are that there is a lot more activity under the ice cap, and that an full eruption is more likely now.

GloriaSmud · 20/07/2011 08:55

Just seen that on the blog.
How's the webcam looking? (Still on DHs phone, still can't see webcams!)

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 20/07/2011 10:31

Pretty much the same really, nothing exciting on it, though they did mess around with it a bit yesterday and managed to get a few close up looks at some ice cauldrons and the flood plain befiore they adjusted it back to its normal setting.

GloriaSmud · 20/07/2011 11:26

I was lol at the posts on the blog, about the mucking about they were doing with the camera!

Grin

I had actually just looked at the webcam, flicked to another page, and went back to it and it had changed. I was a bit Confused at first and thought it was just me. Grin

They seem to think an eruption of some sort is more likely than not now though.

mankyscotslass · 20/07/2011 16:05

And now the webcam has gone off. Angry

GloriaSmud · 21/07/2011 16:45

According to the blog, there was another glacial flood overnight, smaller though than the one a few weeks ago. Things seem to be getting even more dangerous in the area.

GloriaSmud · 21/07/2011 18:34

Loads of quakes to the north of Katla as well.

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 21/07/2011 19:44

More quakes this evening, and on a relatively clear night there seems to be a steam plume coming from the edge of the glacier....possibly from melt water, but equally possibly that it's just cloud.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/07/2011 19:56

oh dear. Maybe just in time for the summer holidays Hmm fascinating though it is it would be kinder for it to stay quiet!

mankyscotslass · 21/07/2011 20:01

I know.

I tihnk the feeling on the blogs I keep and eye on is that something will happen, but not sure when or what! Grin

It could go on like this for months and then go quiet though.

I've been looknig at the webcams on Etna too, some of the pictures are brilliant.

mankyscotslass · 21/07/2011 20:09

I'm really not sure looking at the webcam whether the cloud plume from the glacier is just the usual weather effect caused by the glacier or not.

It does seem to originate in one place and fan out, and when similar clouds have been spotted at the glacier over recent days more cauldrons or some melt water /flooding has occured.

mankyscotslass · 21/07/2011 20:30

whatever it was has dissapted now, so it could have been anything.

Though someone on a blog has just suggested another small glacier flood may have occured, looknig at some water flow and temperature charts.
