Blog here.

Not a good day for local residents to hold their house-of-cards building competition, for sure.

The rl people I spoke to about Hengill couldn't work out why Iceland has to pump water into the ground rather than just use the geothermal available anyway. (Obviously you get more energy that way, but the dangers seem to be quite obvious too.)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/10/2011 19:50

It is so much more active than when we were all looking at it last year!

GloriaSmud · 05/10/2011 20:41

Another blog here. (This used to be the BigThink eruptions blog but has been moved to this new site.)

Some tremor charts for the area ~ here, here and here.

Hekla's looking lovely in the sunshine this morning! Actually looking at all the webcams (list of webcams on the left side of the website, with the blue arrows), the whole place looks lovely this morning. I so want to go there!

Meanwhile, Katla seems to have calmed down although the blog says that the series of earthquakes it had a few days ago, was the largest number since 2002.

Article in the Guardian about an imminent eruption.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/10/2011 13:37

thanks for posting that Gloria. We need to thin 'shhhhh' thoughts to Katla!

GloriaSmud · 13/10/2011 13:50

I've been wondering about the timing of this though. I only knew about it because DH told me about it (he looks at the more sensible Guardian and I have a laugh at keep an eye on the Daily Mail!)

But there's really not been any big, out of the ordinary activity since (from memory) last week and nothing's been mentioned on the blogs. So maybe the Guardian's been infected by the need to write about something and get us all in a panic! I'm liking all the 'shhh' thoughts; could just work!

I think you could have something in the timings as today is the anniversary of one of the major eruptions in 1918 Grin

mankyscotslass · 27/10/2011 19:47

Katla has decided to get our attention again - an earthquake swarm this afternoon.

GloriaSmud · 27/10/2011 21:19

Yep, things are moving about again (darn it, you got in there first again manky!)
The usual websites showing latest movements are here (Icelandic metoffice) and here (Icelandic volcano blog.)

Interesting that they think this is still only Katla clearing her throat and not the start of a full on eruption. Wonder how long the throat~clearing's going to last!

Grin

Only caught it early because I was hiding from the dc. Gotta love half term. Hmm

They seem to think months still, possibly spring next year...but who knows, she could go back to sleep again.

GloriaSmud · 27/10/2011 21:48

I thought I read somewhere that there's a period of several months of the year when Katla eruptions are more likely. I can't remember when those months are though!

Damn - I was going to post this earlier and thought I wouldn't bother you with a little swarm of rumblings. Interesting that they don't think that an eruption is near. This could turn into one of the slowest burning threads on here.

Chaotica · 28/10/2011 00:07

I did look this afternoon just before the big two though. (Have not been obsessive enough.)

GloriaSmud · 06/11/2011 06:07

More rumblings in the night!

OP posts:
Chaotica · 08/11/2011 20:48

Bit of a big crash today!

Chaotica · 11/11/2011 19:12

Another busy day...

But we all know that this thread will get to 1000 posts without anything big happening. (Or do we? Wink)

GloriaSmud · 11/11/2011 20:22

Blog post here (Looking at the comments, it looks like a Swedish photographer is missing in the area.)

Yes, we could still be here in 10 years time, still posting things like, "Yet more rumblings in the night!" and still wondering when we were going to see an eruption. Perhaps mumsnet could give an award for most boring and longest running thread!

Photographer was found dead. Sad

He fell into a crack in a glacier.

Chaotica · 12/11/2011 21:02

Mankyscotslass - that's sad.

There were a couple of big tremors today.

I do hope we get a most boring award. I look at it as a desperate attempt to teach myself to be patient (because I'm certainly not usually). I wouldn't make a good geologist. (I know one guy who spent his PhD looking for impact craters from 250m ago. He didn't find any. I suppose that his colleagues now know where not to look.)

GloriaSmud · 13/11/2011 07:01

Oh dear, that's sad about the photographer.

More rumblings.

And all the while, we're looking in the wrong direction:

spectacular virunga eruption

GloriaSmud · 02/12/2011 09:56

Nice to see the bbc are on the ball and reporting just about what everyone else has been saying for the past few months!

OP posts:
Chaotica · 02/12/2011 16:24

I noticed that too, Gloria. They are not exactly on the case here.
