Do Not BLW!

Yesterday was the final straw, I can’t keep my mouth shut any longer, Baby Led Weaning has gone seriously, dangerously wrong (if it was ever even right to start with).

I attend a weekly mums group, of which I (as far as I’ve worked out) am the only one who is doing traditional weaning. Yesterday, I sat quietly and watched a 7 month old baby have a bacon sandwich for her lunch. A BACON FUCKING SANDWICH. After producing this nutritional feast for her toothless child the mother then looks around and asks where she needs to go to get baby vitamins. It took everything in me not to scream out ‘try the vegetable aisle in the supermarket you stupid bitch!’. I asked if this was the childs lunch or just a snack, to which the reply was, oh no it’s her lunch, she loves bacon and it’s so easy for her to hold’, well… so is a fucking shoelace but I wouldn’t give it to my baby for lunch. Meanwhile, another mother next to me opens a tub of humous and gives it to her 6 month old baby (yes, the whole pot) with a handful of toast. The other mothers chimed in and said how incredibly healthy the baby was because it was eating chickpeas, clearly they have no idea how much salt is in a slice of bread let alone a full sized tub of humous (some pots of humous are known to contain 4 entire crisp bags worth of salt). For dinner that night this same child would go on to sit at the table and gum at a piece of carrot and lump of chicken. Try and working out how much nutrition this child has had today?

In reality there’s only so much you can give a 6 month old baby who hasn’t got any teeth and has swallowed nothing but milk it’s entire life. Going from this to sticking a lump of celery of even chicken in it’s hand is bloody cruel. Naturally it’s going to want to play with it before it eats it, which is why all BLW mums say 99% of the food lands on the floor and very little in the childs actual mouth.

I recently found out that not only has virtually no research been done on BLW, but it was also invented by a Healthvisitor. We have been feeding babies on healthy, nutritious purees for thousands of years then a health vistor comes along with no research whatsoever and starts a fad. The only clear research done on BLW shows that it can be harmful to babies who are struggling to gain weight, doesn’t that tell you enough? (for the mum who’s thinking blenders haven’t been around that long remember that in third world countries today women are still chewing food up and feeding it to their babies, it’s naturally what we are supposed to do, BLW is NOT natural).

Then there is the choking hazard which I’m only going to step on lightly, the day you see your own child properly choke (and one day it will happen) will possibly be the worst day of your life. Why risk this earlier than need be? It’s ludicrous, what’s the rush and what’s the point other than putting your child at risk for a fad? One of the mothers at the group recently said ‘oh he’s only choked a few times’. Well for me that’s a few times too many. And no, a baby CAN NOT choke on puree, if you’re confused as to why look up the definition of choking.

Bread is easy, cheap and soft, it’s fast becoming the staple food of choice for BLW mumies and there’s no arguing that, I’ve watched it happen first hand. In those first years of life a babies cells are developing the fastest they will ever develop again, this is the time that as their mummy we need to step up and make sure we give our child everything they need, it not about giving the baby a choice it’s about giving them a chance and a healthy start. Yes if you want to give your child hand held snacks, great - do it all day AS SNACKS, but please get in your kitchens and make up some healthy, nutritious pureed or mashed foods and spoon feed every last little drop into their mouths, this time will go so fast and least then you can look back and say you gave them the best start you possibly could.

Your level of spite and vitriol really does outweigh any reasonable point you may have had.

How can you extrapolate from 2 examples that something is so wrong? You're using anecdotes which are not the same as evidence.

Any weaning method is going to rely on parents making good choices - be it jars, pouches, pureed home cooked dinners or blw. Personally, I feel both have their place depending on the family and child.

I suspect the parents were actually talking about gagging rather than choking & we're using the wrong terminology.

CainDinglesLeatherJacket · 11/05/2017 10:43

You might have a point. However, delivering it in a rude, derogatory manner will only cause people to overlook your point and view you as someone needing a Biscuit. You're not doing yourself any favours and, as PP have said, you can purée anything, including a happy meal!

user1491572121 · 11/05/2017 10:43

You sound awful! Who are you to ask if it's the baby's lunch? You're not the fucking food police (To ape your style of posting)

You sound unhinged.

jobrum · 11/05/2017 10:44

Maybe it's the parents in your baby group? Most adults are aware of salt content and what is suitable to feed to an infant, whether giving finger food or purees.

Change baby group, maybe you'll be a bit calmer.

Nonibaloni · 11/05/2017 10:44

Wow, just wow.

That's exactly how BLW works, 5 months 31 days of exclusive breast milk, 6 months immediately start on bacon sandwiches.

And obviously feeding high salt, high fat food goes hand in hand with spending evenings calculating the precise nutrients consumed over the day.

Off to give my a toddler a beer now, was done for hundreds of years before all this safe water nonsense.

DramaInPyjamas · 11/05/2017 10:45

"but it was also invented by a Healthvisitor."

^^

Babies have been tipping bowls of spaghetti hoops over their heads since time began.
the phase BLW may have been an new faddy invention but giving your kid a bowl of food and getting on with it is nothing new.

Galla · 11/05/2017 10:46

I agree to an extent.

My circles had a mixture of both types of weaning.

From one extreme of same puree everyday and no lumps or variety to baby led with food the parents were eating which was often entirely unsuitable for babies.

There are good and bad ways of doing both.
I did BLW with both of my children. It worked really well for the first, who loves food and is willing to try anything.
For my second, he is severely under height and weight for his age (now 4) and very fussy. I do wonder, if I had pureed and ensured he got a better mix of food earlier, if he would be bigger now.

FrankiesKnuckle · 11/05/2017 10:50

I've got a couple of hours spare, I'll get comfy.

Here, my first Biscuit

Hullabaloo31 · 11/05/2017 10:50

Your level of spite and vitriol really does outweigh any reasonable point you may have had.

This. I don't agree with you anyway but what a nasty piece of work you are.

AFWIW, both of mine had whole finger foods from the get go with weaning and neither choked on anything.

InapproOrNo · 11/05/2017 10:51

Fwiw, babies need to learn to choke. It's called a gag reflex

You don't learn a reflex.

I agree Blw seems like an unnecessary faff. Isn't it just babies playing with food? When you want them to actually eat something you spoon it into them.

Mine had baby porridge and purée and now they eat everything in sight. And they can use cutlery beautifully Grin

MyCalmX · 11/05/2017 10:51

I agree OP Smile

TortoiseBeep · 11/05/2017 10:52

Well, my son's paediatrician recommends giving babies family meals from day one (and to try them on nuts ASAP) so I think I'll stick with that rather than ranty people off the Internet, thanks.

DEMum101 · 11/05/2017 10:52

Obviously over salty food is bad for babies and telling someone that about bacon would be doing them a favour. However just because some people do BLW wrong doesnt mean it is a bad way to feed a baby. We did it with DD. She never choked. Gagged a bit with apple but soon got the hang of that. She enjoyed a wide range of foods and grew and developed well.

Her hand eye coordination can't have been hurt by feeding herself yogurt and spag bol with a spoon from an early age (only at home obv). Mind you i am not saying there aren't plenty of other ways to develop that.

Honestly, feed your baby your way but don't criticise others for their choices. Salt is a danger and people do need warning about that but properly done, BLW is no better or worse than pureeing, just different.

MyCalmX · 11/05/2017 10:52

And just Shock at the pp who said a baby needs to learn to choke.

JaneJeffer · 11/05/2017 10:53

I agree OP but you will get attacked for saying so. Babies were given mashed up food for centuries and they all learned to eat solids just fine. I hate to see them chewing on huge chunks of food. It's like watching Mrs. Doyle eating the sandwich on Father Ted Grin

Sparrowlegs248 · 11/05/2017 10:54

Wow. You'd have been better off saying something to the parents involved wouldn't you?

Fwiw, my son was blw. I didn't give him.bacon sandwiches. He had a variety of softer fruits and cooked veg, eggs, cheese etc. Some bread. Yogurt. Pasta. Once he could manage those we added more foods in. He's not yet two and eats very well, hasn't choked and feeds himself. I was very conscious of salt especially before he was 1.

I'd rather blw done properly than poking spoonfuls of puree in at 3 months.

Unihorn · 11/05/2017 10:54

This is a troll, no? Why are people responding?

Sparrowlegs248 · 11/05/2017 10:54

I will say though, I left a BLW Facebook page as they were as bonkers as the op sounds.

RosieThorn · 11/05/2017 10:56

Do Not Command Others How To Wean!
You can offer polite, helpful suggestions but seriously OP - Do Not Be A Dick!

53rdWay · 11/05/2017 10:56

totally right. EVERYONE knows you're supposed to purée the bacon sandwiches until they start school.

ElspethFlashman · 11/05/2017 10:56

Ooh Im in the mood for a rowdy thread.

I tried BLW at first, totally bought into it. It was crap. The child was actually ingesting fuck all and it took aaaaaages. Who has the time?

Switched to steaming mixed veg in microwave and blitzing it with protein in processor and freezing in ice cube trays. They got a massive variety of food and lots of it at a time. Never looked back.

I now think BLW is a bit pointless, tbh. Just don't see any advantage.

HateSummer · 11/05/2017 10:56

They need to learn to start experiencing the gag reflex. They won't be able to control large bits of food if they've never experienced it going down.

Maudlinmaud · 11/05/2017 10:58

Somebody got up the wrong side of the bed this morning Grin

TessTube · 11/05/2017 10:59

This is hilarious. Grin

user1494494728 · 11/05/2017 10:59

Thanks Jane, I knew I'd get mauled but it's okay. I am shocked about someone saying I'm mad then saying a baby needs to learn to choke, it's things like that that scare me.

And I've been watching people bring all sorts of food in for 6 months, not just on this one occasion. What people are giving their babies has got out of hand, by 2030 the NHS has said more than half of the population will be clinically obese, so when I see a tiny baby munching on a bacon sarnie or a pork chop yes it does get to me. BLW is a way of saying here give your baby whatever you want, and whilst some mums may be doing it right so many are going to far and it's getting way out of hand. It's become so established now though, I knew you'd all rip my head off but as long as I know there are a couple of people out there that can see whats going on or one mum will read this and see sense then it was worth it!
