...what comes out in the poo of a baby you are weaning

Background we have just started baby led weaning my daughter on to limited solids.
Click here for pictures of her first meal

As we EC our daughter, we catch her poo in a potty and I have noticed that whatever food I put in one end of our baby is coming out pretty intact at the other end, except banana which seems to result in a very vile glope. In total her behaviour and wee/poo seems fairly normal apart from this addtional food component.

Tell me this is normal..please.

It is normal. ANd the photos are great! She looks very enthousiastic about the food. I think my dd was about 11 months before she started really digesting the fodd.

BabiesEverywhere · 01/03/2007 12:52

Thanks, 11 months, that is interesting.

So the 'Fun is for fun, before One' thing really is true, if they are not digesting food until then ?

CheesyFeet · 01/03/2007 12:54

Yup, totally normal

Her digestive system has to gear up to digesting food properly.

It's not harming her at all, it doesn't mean she isn't ready.

DD was the same. Carroty poo. Niiiiiice.

Beleive me, it's much much more horrible when they do start digesting it

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 01/03/2007 12:57

when i first saw a banana nappy i was convinced my PFB had caught threadworms!

DizzyBint · 01/03/2007 12:57

dd started doing proper poos quite quickly. i was shocked how all of a sudden she went from sloppy bf baby poos to proper formed, roll off the nappy, poos. no bits of food in them either once she was maybe 7 months. unless she's had sweetcorn. oh, and she used to poo out whole long pieces of courgette skin, now she has figured out to chomp the flesh and leave the skin. so no more courgette skin poos.

hunkerdave · 01/03/2007 12:59

They're not necessarily digesting purees - a puree-fed baby does poos that pretty much resemble what goes in the top end too

CheesyFeet · 01/03/2007 13:01

Agree hunker, dd was fed purees. I was thinking of simply smearing them in her nappy and cutting out the middle bit. Less messy .

deaconblue · 01/03/2007 13:03

Ah what cute photos. What is EC though? How do you always manage to catch her poo? Ds poos at all times of day, I'd have to carry a potty behind him all day

BabiesEverywhere · 01/03/2007 13:04

I was thinking of simply smearing them in her nappy and cutting out the middle bit

LOL, I was just say here thinking what is the point of all this feeding, if it just comes out again...joke

oh my god

WHAT is EC

BLW is bad enough

(feels very very old and reactionary)

BabiesEverywhere · 01/03/2007 13:08

What EC is and isn't

My DD farts loudly before a poo, hence my cue to put her on the potty. I haven't had pooey pants/nappies for months (with one - left daughter with DH exception)

We are still working on the wees and miss on average 1 to 3 a day, though we have a few no miss days.

Enid, I promise you I'm not mad or insane It is just what works for my daughter.

OP posts:
morningpaper · 01/03/2007 13:14

lol

You forget how totally OBSESSIVE you become about poo when you have a small baby

Enid · 01/03/2007 13:14

I am sure you are not either mad or insane!

I just find it impossible to get my head around wanting to do it

which is obv more my problem than yours!

CheesyFeet · 01/03/2007 13:15

Enid, BE's dd had horrible nappy rash and this has been the only way to cure it.

I've seen it in action and it works well - for them - as her dd is in obvious discomfort when she need to wee/poo. They aren't waiting for ages, she actually wees on the potty as soon as she is placed on it. I would never have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.

My dd is 2.8 and a total potty training refusenik. Couldn't give two hoots that she's wet/needs a poo/whatever.

I had never heard of BLW or EC when dd was small enough for these things. I'm a convert to both and would try them if I have another.

morningpaper · 01/03/2007 13:15

I think that EC will be The Next Big Thing

Not that I am a lentil weaver AT ALL. But surely it can't be worse than putting children in disposables for 2-5 years? I think we have become desensitised to just how BONKERS that is.

Enid · 01/03/2007 13:16

use washables then

Enid · 01/03/2007 13:16

you all have too much time on your hands

(is Enids familiar cry)

CheesyFeet · 01/03/2007 13:16

I would like to confirm however that BE is both mad and insane.

morningpaper · 01/03/2007 13:17

2-5 years of washables isn't that much better! Have you seen the price of electricity lately?

CheesyFeet · 01/03/2007 13:17

Enid - re the washables, she does, it was the first thing they tried.

CheesyFeet · 01/03/2007 13:18

Agree mp

dd is still in disposables. If I had used my crystal ball now when she was tiny I would have bought reusables and EC'd.

morningpaper · 01/03/2007 13:19

I think we need a revolution in early potty training

we have lost the art

BabiesEverywhere · 01/03/2007 13:19

Thanks MP, CF

I would never have thought in a million years that I would do half the things I do with my daughter (baby wear, breast fed etc), I use to be a hardened career woman..how things change.
