...what comes out in the poo of a baby you are weaning

Background we have just started baby led weaning my daughter on to limited solids.
Click here for pictures of her first meal

As we EC our daughter, we catch her poo in a potty and I have noticed that whatever food I put in one end of our baby is coming out pretty intact at the other end, except banana which seems to result in a very vile glope. In total her behaviour and wee/poo seems fairly normal apart from this addtional food component.

Tell me this is normal..please.

so how do you recommend i start trying to get dd using a potty at 14 months? any hints gratefully accepted. she did pee in it once at grandma's when my mum was on the loo making pppssss noises. but we've tried the same here and nothing. she just tried to climb up onto our knees.

she also eats plums at grandma's and won't touch them here. bloody 70s supergran and all that.

clairemow · 01/03/2007 13:44

my 6 month old seems to only do a poo on the changing mat - I know the sorts of times of day he's likely to do one, and as I take the (washable) nappy off and lift his legs, invariably he'll do a poo. I guess I could easily convert this to ECing. Catching a poo in a liner on a changing mat and then chucking it down the loo is so easy, and it doesn't stick to his bottom either, so nappy rash eliminated.

Jillyadoodledoo · 01/03/2007 13:46

Oh part time!
Another set of letters to add to my BF, BLW etc (no CC in this house though!)
I forgot to say BE that your DD is beautiful, and better at sitting than mine . She can sit, just not for long and no great arm waving as she would topple.
LA - love the hat. DD is that messy with eating as well. Even with brocolli it just ends up ALL OVER her face.

claire, if you hold your son over the toilet to poo, no liner to mess with and just one wipe of toilet paper to clean his bottom.

Aitch,
I'll write a few EC starter tips in Potty Training secion and post a link here when I do it...OK

Jillyadoodledoo · 01/03/2007 13:51

Oh and BE - we have (clean) laminate floor or a clean plastic sheet under her chair and we recycle a load of stuff that she drops back onto the tray.

BabiesEverywhere · 01/03/2007 13:55

We have a plastic sheet under DD's highchair but that is where our cats fight it out for bits of veg, so we can't return any dropped food to her (which is a shame)

Claire, get a toilet training seat thing so he can sit unsupported and won't fall in. Then just sit him there when you take the nappy off. Much more relaxing.

Jillyadoodledoo · 01/03/2007 13:59

BE - I just followed a link from your site to Prospect. MP if that is you it is a completely brilliant article.

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 01/03/2007 14:02

that is indeed MP. and it was even better before it was sub-edited a bit. Gin

morningpaper · 01/03/2007 14:02

thankyouverymuch

BabiesEverywhere · 01/03/2007 14:10

MP, I hope you don't mind me linking to your article, but I loved it, I nearly fell off my chair laughing.

OK back to EC (should we be starting a new thread ?) - I am wondering how to sell it to DH. He already thinks I weave a few too many lentils, though he now sees the benefits of cloth, and BLW. Should have seen his face when my free sample of soap nuts arrived.

morningpaper · 01/03/2007 14:12

Not at all I am VERY flattered

morningpaper · 01/03/2007 14:13

I don't do EC but I do early toilet training - put mine on the toilet from about 4-6 months at the same time as nappy changing - I've found they just go

DH does the same because he thinks what I do is normal - also if he doesn't stick dd on the loo before her bath then he gets the pleasure of scooping poo out of the bath with his hands 10 minutes later...

BabiesEverywhere · 01/03/2007 14:15

With my husband I just starting to do the potty thing and waited until he asked about it. When he did ask, I just said I was catching a few wees to reduce the nappy washing. Later on when he could see it working, he had a go and caught a wee and since then he is on board 100%.

He even bothers the poor pregnant girl at his work about which potty, cloth nappies and slings she'll be using with her baby and not to bother buying a pram !!!

Sorry, slight hijack, although BabiesEverywhere, your DD is sooo lovely. The article that MP wrote in Prospect was the first thing I showed DH. He thought it was fab, couldn't get enough, started 'browsing' Mumsnet and now I think he reads it more than me.... ! He gets most edgy if my Good, Bad & Ugly reaches my e-mail before his .
Alright dear? If you are reading this... get back to work pls.

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 01/03/2007 14:18

so do you think that's a good time to start, MP? just before bathtime? tbh i'm such a Bad Mum i don't really change her nappy that often, just a couple of times a day.

BabiesEverywhere · 01/03/2007 14:20

MP, What you do sounds like part time Ecing rather than early potty training ?

OP posts:
morningpaper · 01/03/2007 14:21

I don't really know Aitch, when does she tend to poo?

BabiesEverywhere · 01/03/2007 14:22

You can start where you like.

I think I would start with the two easiest wees to catch :

  1. After a nap/sleep wee
  2. After a miss, ie. nappy change

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 01/03/2007 14:23

she tends to poo while she sleeps during the day. not particularly helpful. has only ever pooed once in the bath.

BabiesEverywhere · 01/03/2007 14:25

Watch carefully before the next expected poo for any signs, my daughter farts loudly several times before poo arrives.

Other children wriggle or make a particular sound/action.
