...what comes out in the poo of a baby you are weaning

Background we have just started baby led weaning my daughter on to limited solids.
Click here for pictures of her first meal

As we EC our daughter, we catch her poo in a potty and I have noticed that whatever food I put in one end of our baby is coming out pretty intact at the other end, except banana which seems to result in a very vile glope. In total her behaviour and wee/poo seems fairly normal apart from this addtional food component.

Tell me this is normal..please.

while she SLEEPS

YUCK

grooosssss

I'd stick her on the loo and read her a book 20 mintues BEFORE her nap

BabiesEverywhere · 01/03/2007 14:27

And/Or offer the potty before that naptime.

Just sit baby on the potty and read a book, play with a toy .

ah no, she won't sit on the potty, just sticks her feet into it and climbs up on things. that's why i was interested in the idea of her hovering over the loo.
actually, her nap poo is generally what wakes her up, iykwim? [oddly crushed by the fact that MP thinks DD is gross]

clairemow · 01/03/2007 14:30

thanks for the tips. He just woke, so going to get him up from nap now and hover over the loo. We'll see what happens!!

BabiesEverywhere · 01/03/2007 14:33

My daughter wakes up at night now to wee in a potty, rather than sleeping though. I think this is an improvement. Not sure at 2pm

You can hold your daughter over the toilet in the classic position and then you must relax. The more relaxed you are the more likely it is for your LO to do something.

This is NOT our picture but one off an ECing site which I hope they won't mind me borrowing.
Classical Position

hehe no SHE is not gross

I mean it is gross FOR her

I didn't know they could crap in their sleep

I prefer the toddler toilet seat option - seems more comfy and they can't run off mid-poo

clairemow · 01/03/2007 14:35

that position makes sense to me. However, not keen on him waking again in the night! He's been sleeping 12 hours through for about 6 weeks now, and definitely not up for disrupting it!!!

terramum · 01/03/2007 14:36

Poo with what looks like untouched food in it is normal for early solids - its takes them time to get the hang of the chewing action. Plus a lot of digestion starts with chewing & desecating the food with the molars....which of course most babies dont get until later so they do still look like this for a while. DS got his first molars when he was 18 month-ish but his nappies didnt really change until a few months afterwards - but it was very noticeable - ie you couldnt tell what he had been eating apart from when he had eaten things like seeds or raisins in a hurry

clairemow · 01/03/2007 14:39

Aitch, I thought pooing in your sleep was par for the course for babies/toddlers... DS1 (2.9) poos every morning in his nappy before he gets up. He's in pants all day but gets quite upset about losing the nappy at night - "but Mummy, the poo will go all over the sheets and my cover"...! He's always pooed at nap times too, so having DS2 who only seems to poo on a changing table (interesting to see me jumo when it's fairly runny milky poo...).

You are not alone!

BabiesEverywhere · 01/03/2007 14:39

Well, my daughter has just shared my lunch of porridge with me. Now she need a bath and a change of clothes and tomorrow, I will look forward to empting a potty of undigested porridge...joy joy.

yeah, i was looking at the toddler toilet seat but we have an amazingly fancy (twatty, actually) toilet with hidden fittings so i don't think they would be compatible.
am aitch btw, having a New Romantic moment on another thread.

morningpaper · 01/03/2007 14:43

just get one of those padded jobbies from Mothercare

Surely must fit in most loos

SeonaDancing · 01/03/2007 14:43

and oooooh, couldn't you just take a bite out of that baby's legs? the one in the EC picture, i mean.

SeonaDancing · 01/03/2007 14:44

do they just sit on the loo seat? if so i'm sure that would work.

MerryMarigold · 01/03/2007 14:56

my sis lived in China and she said babies/ kids just wee and poo anywhere on the pavement. Not great for hygiene! She is quite a hardened and adventurous person but it turned her stomach...

Jillyadoodledoo · 01/03/2007 15:03

Hey BE - that's three new converts akcherlee . Am gonna see if I can spot the signs with DD and give it a go when I next change her. Who cares if DH thinks I have added a new lentil to the weave?

Enid · 01/03/2007 15:03

I would be concerned if NONE of the food was being digested

eg porridge IME should digest quite thoroughly?

the only time dd3 has big lumps of food in her poo is when she is poorly

SeonaDancing · 01/03/2007 15:18

with dd, the porridge is digested but the husky bits remain. i know this because they are a bugger to clean off her bottom.

Jillyadoodledoo · 01/03/2007 15:18

Oh - just saw the porridge thing. When DD has porridge you can't spot it in the poo. It is just chunks of carrot/brocolli flowers etc that really show up.

clairemow · 01/03/2007 15:23

well, mixed success..! Took off his nappy, tried sitting him on DS1's potty (big one, nice big backrest) - he screamed blue murder so put him back on changing mat, where he promptly pooed and smiled up at me endearingly...

VeniVidiVickiQV · 01/03/2007 15:39

ROFL at having letters after your name...

VVVQV, BF BLW EC hons

if i had done BLW and EC if course

BabiesEverywhere · 01/03/2007 15:39

Baby bathed, dressed and down for a nap.

Try putting the potty on the changing mat before you sit your baby on it, as that is where he thinks you should do a poo.

It also might be worth investing a £5 in a baby potty - 'Baby Bjorn Little Potty' are perfect for cute baby bottoms....try Ebay.

I was told Boots sell a very small potty too.
