Just wondering if anyone is interested in a vegan chat thread , inspired by a reply I gave on another vegan thread ,I don't know any vegans to just chat to.
We are a vegan family, but other than that ,I don't know any vegans,I'm not in any vegan groups.
It's actually a big part of my life ,that I don't really get to talk about at all.
Be nice to chat to any other vegans, especially at night when I often can't sleep

Definitely. I have been able to hear cows crying as they grieve for their babies for a matter of months now (I live near lots of farms). My Mum (who lives practically next door to me, same cluster of houses) visited on a hot day and asked why my windows/doors were all closed so I told her, she said she hadn't heard it all. So desensitised.

Oh and it did work thank you. That and a swim and a hot bath. I was a bit squiffy last night in the village local!

Always good to have a night like that! Glad you are recovered 😍

Hi all.

@TofuTuesday I also do not like mushrooms. That's why the ubiquitous vegan item on a menu of mushroom risotto makes me sigh and heave. I'm also not a fan of aubergine, but oddly enough love baba ghanoush. I also had aubergine in my pitta last night but thankfully the other ingredients drowned the taste out. I'm trying hard to learn to love it. I did have the mushroom arancini when out yesterday as that was the only thing on offer. It came with a spicy pepper sauce so the taste was covered up.

A swim and a hot bath sounds wonderful @TheBrambleDormouse

We were out for a Sunday roast at the pub today. All vegan nut roast (we gave the cauliflower cheese side to the DCs). Vegan yorkshires and vegan gravy etc. It was good and filling. The nut roast didnt have nuts in it, despite the name. It was rice, sunflower seeds, grated vegetables. It was quite okay.

TofuTuesday · 25/10/2026 19:52

For Christmas I usually do all the veg as vegan, using olive oil etc, then a Quorn roast for the teens and I have some kind of ready made vegan plant based bake, plus as many vegan pigs in blankets as I can find. I usually don’t use ready made food (except my excitement for the Grubby delivery!) but make an exception for Christmas Day.

TofuTuesday · 25/10/2026 19:53

Oh I also do roast, mash and new potatoes as well all love carbohydrate 🤣

Interested in what Grubby is like. I understand your excitement i get that with my Planthood delivery which I love !! for trying different recipes
What is Grubby like? Is that the one the Bosch guys are affiliated with?

TofuTuesday · 25/10/2026 20:36

https://grubby.co.uk/ I chose it as it has a vegan (non mushroom) carbonara so I was excited about it. One of the things I cannot be bothered to make for vegans (do a great veggie one). What’s planthood like?

Thank you, it was a nice bit of night out. Enough booze for good chatter and cosy feelings but not enough to ruin the next day or get to feeling ill. Nice quick walk home too.

TheBrambleDormouse · 25/10/2026 21:46

I think i am going to make something out of seitan for xmas this year. I'll be going to my parents and they'll usually buy me a main of some sort and keep some sides non-animal for me.

Would recommend. I just get it once every 4 weeks and you can pause it if its not convenient any particular momth
Has let me try put different recipes in wouldn't have thought of. And I love the convenience . Been great this weekend as not wanted to venture out withnthe weather!"

NoHangoversToday · 26/10/2026 06:44

Morning all.

I need to use up leftovers for breakfast so plan to have a spicy tofu scramble wrap with the oven cooked aubergines, marinated artichokes and the leftover chopped salad with parsley, lemon and probably some chilli flakes. I think that will set me up nicely for the day!

DCs are clamoring for a roast again today so that's easily sorted with something for everyone. But I'm planning on cooking up a pot of red lentil dahl as well for tomorrow. I'm thinking of going more heavy on the ginger than I usually do.

Does anyone else count serves of vegetables? I started when an omnivore some years back and realised I wasn't getting 5 serves a day so needed to focus my attention. It's now such a habit- almost intrusive really. I'm trying to get out of it because now of course I average 9 serves on a low day so I don't think it's necessary!

Hope everyone has a lovely day!

TheBrambleDormouse · 26/10/2026 07:15

I love tofu scramble but it never touches the sides on me. I'm hungry again very quickly!
I am a bodybuilder though. Speaking of which, I've been buiking for a while. I am going to start cutting next week and will cut down to 'normal' portions as of today. Won't be fun after weeks of stuffing my face with whatever I like 😆

I'm in bed with a coffee. Will get up and take the dog out soon. She was a rejected puppy 11 years ago, mum wouldn't feed her. I was meant to wean her on bottles and give her back. Couldn't do it. Absolutely impossible.

You might as well have asked me to lift my house above my head and walk down the street with it.😆

Unpopular opinion but I've always liked what spoons offers!
There's nowhere independent near me unfortunately that does a good vegan breakfast (that I know of anyway).

I am not too far from corarima which is a favourite for dinner.

Corarima looks wonderful! I’m far away down south unfortunately, but if I’m ever up that way I will visit. 👍🏻
Spoons are great for choice and value.

It sounds like a good start to the week! I work9-5 on a Monday unfortunately so I get the dog out and that's about all I am good for. I have rescued a very cold tired wasp this morning who's currently chugging sugary water in a box in my kitchen.

I will make some seitan for brunch shortly. I used to make it from scratch but got fed up of all the mess and effort so I bought a large back of VWG recently. Will see how long it lasts me to gauge whether it is cost-effective!

Will have it with hummus and a salad of some sort. Not sure about the rest of the day yet! I made a huge vat of salsa over the weekend.
I'm also creating a deadwood pile near my pond, a good use of logs for invertebrates, amphibians possibly, and other biodiversity.

I moved into this house early this year and the previous occupants had totally paved what used to be lovely little patch of nature, I have spent all my time taking all the flags up and planting! Just got it done in time for winter. Planted a lot of spring bulbs, left a small patio but now have a lawn, veg growing, lots of insects and birds. And a pond.

I like spoons too tbh. Although DS1 calls it 'the place with the sticky carpets' Grin

It's good value IMO.

OMG, Corarima is near me!

Thank you for the recommendation. I will definitely give it a try.

Oh a pond. How lovely,
My garden is just bogstandard
Lots of bird feeders...sparrows, finches. starlings, crows pigeons magpies!
And my foxy friends that I feed every night

Agoddessonamountaintop · 27/10/2026 00:20

That does look tasty. We had teryaki tofu the other night, from the Soph’s Kitchen book (she focuses on high protein meals and snacks), then tonight pasta with tomato sauce made into a ‘Bolognaise’ by crumbling tofu and baking it in the oven with soy, nutritional yeast and oil. Turns out like reconstituted soy mince but much tastier and less processed and absolutely delicious. I made pesto for the dose of greens. The ‘mince’ was from the Tofoo recipe book which I can see I’ll be using a lot.

RampantIvy · 27/10/2026 07:14

@Agoddessonamountaintop I found that crumbled or grated tofu baked in the oven a complete revelation as a substitute for mince. I think it replicates the texture of meat better than anything else I have tried. I think I posted a taco recipe using grated tofu upthread.

I didn't know that there was a Tofoo recipe book. You have given me inspiration for a Christmas present for DD.
