Just wondering if anyone is interested in a vegan chat thread , inspired by a reply I gave on another vegan thread ,I don't know any vegans to just chat to.
We are a vegan family, but other than that ,I don't know any vegans,I'm not in any vegan groups.
It's actually a big part of my life ,that I don't really get to talk about at all.
Be nice to chat to any other vegans, especially at night when I often can't sleep

I don’t make mayo, happy to add a splodge to an otherwise decent diet. I make all the cakes etc but don’t really eat much of them. Make vegan icecream. Make a lot from scratch and use olive oil.
I do sometimes have a fake chicken sandwich to liven my week up!

Monpetitchoumonpetitepois · 19/10/2026 15:34

You sound similar to me in that i am not a sophisticated cook. We are dairy free, I buy coconut milk and mergulo butter. I've never purchased vegan cheese or meats. I watch some vegan youtube videos but they heavily feature upf, or the dishes I already cook. One taught me squashed/smashed potatoes which has been a good item to add on our rotation

Snowyowl99 · 19/10/2026 15:42

I dont like vegan meats....very occasionally a roll and Richmonds meat free sausage 😊. I do enjoy that
Vegan cheese are not my thing either but at Xmas I purchase La Fauxmongerie cheese....or Kinda cheese...both nut based (not the coconut oil based supermarket ones)

They are delicious...a bit pricey but worth it for a treat !

Hi, another 95% plant based here, hope it’s ok to join the chat?

The fauxmagerie cheese is incredible. I try and keep as a very special occasional treat, basically meaning I have to ban myself from Waitrose, because if I enter the store I will buy it!

I’m not a huge fan of vegan fake meat, but I do agree with you on the Richmonds meat free sausages! Occasionally, I used to love a sandwich from M&S food called Plant Kitchen New York Style No Salt-Beef Pretzel Roll. It was absolutely amazing but it’s now been discontinued. 😩😭 Probably better for my health that I can no longer get it! Instead I can use the myriad of different fruit and veg available everywhere.

Never heard of the fauxmagerie till now, surprised how expensive it is... Definitely special occasions or treat time 🤣
I mostly buy Cathedral City's plant based cheddar, which is pretty good imo. And vegan cream cheese, which I love as a dip too.

I don’t really like vegan cheese.
I have found some amazing chocolate substitute which I buy every so often as a junky treat.
its called buttermilk and is about £1.50 in Tesco etc but you can buy direct. I’ve tried loads over the years and keep coming back to this.

I will look out for that. Thank you

I buy dark chocolate now..with high cocoa percentage. Supposed to be good for you with high antioxidant content 🙂

I also like Whitakers creme chocolates..various flavours mint, orange etc. Lovely with a coffee after a meal.

TofuTuesday · 20/10/2026 00:11

@Snowyowl99 you might not like it in that case, it’s much more of a junky taste than dark chocolates. I’ve tried really hard to like dark chocolate but managed one with raspberries and have generally failed

i do like cooking from scratch though, love making daal and curry at the moment..

Hello! Not read much of this thread as I’m off to bed, just wanted to to mention a few things:
Soph’s Kitchen is a great cookbook, she really focuses on high protein recipes (I’m a bit obsessed with this as I have osteoporosis and I’m getting old, plus I hadn’t realised quite how relatively low in protein things like beans and lentils are). She has a great way with tofu pieces; tear it with your hands and it’s much easier to crisp up, and more natural looking.
DH just bought the Tofoo cookbook (not entirely vegan); tonight we had a dahl plus fried tofu to which you then add 2 teaspoons each of soy sauce and garam masala - totally yummy and satisfying!
I’ve always pretty much cooked from scratch but it’s good to have shortcuts and easy healthy meals.
I try and avoid upf as much as possible so am pleased to have discovered symplicity sausages - they’re made by a fermenting process and don’t seem to have anything you wouldn’t have in your kitchen. Very tasty. The This Isn’t range seems pretty natural as well; we sometimes have a bolognaise with their ‘mince.’ Goodnight!

I keep them whole if used as a salad but I do mash them a little bit if it's going into a sandwich.

I have also just triggered a craving for them in myself by writing about it! Grin

Thankyou.

RampantIvy · 20/10/2026 07:54

If you grate tofu and bake it with soy sauce and various seasonings the texture is more chewy and "meaty" than any other fake meat.

We regularly make this tofu taco recipe:

Shredded tofu tacos - Lazy Cat Kitchen

Shredded tofu tacos are a great source of protein, easy to make, full of flavours and textures. Vegan, gluten-free.

NoHangoversToday · 20/10/2026 08:47

That looks really good @RampantIvy . I have a block of tofu and was going to do wraps but might do those tacos instead! I was going to do stir fry but I went off that idea.

Oh I like all sorts of chocolate and nothing like a bit of " junky" sometimes. Ive just looked at website and it looks tempting

Snowyowl99 · 20/10/2026 12:01

Thanks for all the suggestions and things to try

MoodyMargaret11 · 18/10/2026 22:33

£27 - how much did you buy? 🤣
I dont tend to eat chocolate, mostly wafers and biscuits. But recently tried some nice bars from Aldi. They come in smaller individual wraps inside (5 I think) which gets me to slow down and not eat the entire thing at once lol

Hardly anything, I was making a vegan rocky road ,and most of it is now gone ..most expensive vegan rocky road ever 🤣🤣🤣

May I join?

I'm not 100% vegan. DH is about 95% vegan. But we are both aiming for it. At the moment any slips are due mostly to not being hyper vigilant.

Hi welcome
I remember going vegan ..
I was sneaking cheese and onion crisps for ages after deciding to go vegan .
Then on boxing day I had a sneaky caramel quality street and ,pulled out a filling..served me right ..I did completely go vegan after that

I feel.the same. Makes me so sad that people actually don't care about the cruelty to get meat on their plates. It really gets me down

Welcome ..yes I feel exactly the same ,it's so upsetting

Hi, joining in. I’m the only vegan, dh eats meat and the kids were raised vegetarian. Since the kids were born I chose veganism but didn’t know enough/didn't want to restrict them as much so they stayed veggie. None have chosen to eat meat/fish etc as of yet, all young adults.

im moving from plant based to veganism - replacing leather items with non leather etc.

currently trying to get a little recipe book of protein and easy bowls - rice, curry, daal / black beans, couscous, tofu etc so I can meal plan for me and have some easy things to do.

Hello ,yes it's good to have a set few meals written down that you can fall back on .
We actually all went vegan when the kids were little.but mil made such a fuss and put a lot of pressure on me that we went back to vegetarian.
Then 10 years later at we all started going vegan ,one after the other , everyone chose for themselves

I am vegetarian and have been for nearly 20 years. I just love cheese too much to go for a 100 per cent vegan diet. Also, I love watching equestrian sports and as I understand for vegans that would count as animal exploitation.

Cheese was my downfall for a long time as well
We can all only do what we can do

👋 been watching this thread but not sure what to add. We have been trying over the last 12 months to make better choices. We have been dairy free for as long as I can remember. Definitely not vegan as I have a few leather goods purchased decades ago. What I find difficult is most plant based options are upf. How do you limit upf with a full plant based diet?

Hello and a warm welcome .
Unfortunately I would say we have to many upf ..I admit I'm not the greatest cook ..I can throw things together that kind of resembles a dish ..but I cut corners wherever I can ,hope you get some good answers here

That was my favourite ever sandwich..I actually can't believe it's gone ..m and s lost some good vegan foods ,I used to go in there's lots ,and it was all in one chilled area ,now it's all mixed in all over the shop ..I haven't got the time to go up and down every isle trying to find foods that used to be together
