Just wondering if anyone is interested in a vegan chat thread , inspired by a reply I gave on another vegan thread ,I don't know any vegans to just chat to.
We are a vegan family, but other than that ,I don't know any vegans,I'm not in any vegan groups.
It's actually a big part of my life ,that I don't really get to talk about at all.
Be nice to chat to any other vegans, especially at night when I often can't sleep

Never heard of the fauxmagerie till now, surprised how expensive it is... Definitely special occasions or treat time 🤣
I mostly buy Cathedral City's plant based cheddar, which is pretty good imo. And vegan cream cheese, which I love as a dip too.

I read somewhere that's being discontinued

Ok on cheese. Was anyone else mildly addicted to vegan babybel until they changed the recipe and made them disgusting?

Hello! I’d love to join!
Lifeling veggie and vegan past couple of years. DH eats meat and I can feel quite lonely not knowing any real life vegans and hardly any veggies.

Same here ,I only know my family ,and although vegan ,they don't want to talk about it because it's just normal..they just go to the cupboard and assume vegan snacks arrived by magic

@Springswallow I loved the red and white ones and detest the new green ones. I emailed and got a standard reply - no idea why they changed it.

NoHangoversToday · 20/10/2026 16:20

I spent a little bit of time in a pub before my haircut today and someone ordered the vegan shepherds pie…. I was so tempted to go and say hi and how was it? Did anyone else ( and I did this before being veg never kind vegan) make a point of ordering a vegan meal in places so they’d know there was a market. Honestly, not sure what took me so long to actually do it. 😝

It can be quite isolating. I have no vegan friends, so great to have this chat

Why change something that worked so well ... probably cheaper ingredients I expect

So every now and again ,there's a plant based market in a town near me ..I keep meaning to go .. literally time runs away with me ..but I wonder if that means vegan..like will the little things about being vegan (that are important to me ) be considered..or is it plant based ,so could be cooked in with meat items or ,I don't know ,say gelatin in something..I'm not entirely sure if it's actually vegan ..but I will still go and have a nose about at some point

I can't see that anyone has mentioned Booja Booja chocolate anywhere.

Highly recommended.

What a lovely thread, thanks all!
I've been vegetarian since childhood, and vegan since last year.
I'm interested in the distinction mentioned earlier about vegan (as a lifestyle/philosophy) vs. plant-based (as a diet).
What things do you guys do that make you 'vegan', do you think? Not buying/wearing leather is a big one (though I'll confess, I'm using my old leather goods rather than replacing them - they are mostly second-hand anyway, from a long time ago, and I just won't buy any more). I also try to garden in a wildlife-friendly way. I would love to hear other suggestions/ideas!

For me it's not cooking food in with meat ..the pub near me has vegan next to the chips ..then at the bottom it says cooked in with chicken,,..so I couldn't eat that ..or not eating honey ,or gelatin ..like properly vegan is important to me

Things that make me vegan not just plant based:

strict exclusion of all food that may have included use of animal products (including figs and honey etc)
Avoid exploitation of animals for human gain - no zoo trips, no more pets after the ancient cat dies, etc
no new leather, silk etc
check beauty products for use of testing
etc

I'm a shiny new vegan. DH is as close to vegan as anything and he was the one who inspired me.

For DH- it's ethics. This may be outing because we have talked about IRL but that's fine. We lived for a decade or so in the Balkans and butchering of animals was done right in front of you where we lived. I recall we walked past a goat who was being butchered and his goat friend who was next was shaking in fear. We both went vegan then.

Then we returned to the UK we bot started eating meat. Because it came in nice little packages covered in plastic and we (or at least me) could pretend it wasn;t what it was.

For a time I would buy from our local butcher and spend more money in the hope that it was more 'humane'.

DH got to it for good way before I did. I was a keen cook and I was very intent on cultural food experiences that included meat which kept me blocked I think.

I then shifted because I have a number of auto immune conditions and when researching books like Dr Michael Greger's 'How Not To Die' and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, all the research stacked up that for my conditions avoiding animal products was a Very Good Thing.

Now, I describe it as my diet catching up with my ethics. But it was the health aspect that gave me the final nudge.

I have not gotten rid of leather etc because I don't think that it's right to dispose of anything that an animal has died for. But I most emphatically will not buy animal products again.

DH inherited from an uncle a huge case of Victorian taxidermy about 3 years or so back. Turns out it's highly collectible. So we sold it at auction for mega bucks and then donated the lot to the RSPB (most of the poor animals were birds).

So - that's my story I think.

Oh yeah- my hair. Grin

I have what i call 'my annual haircut'. But i haven't actually had it cut for 18 months or so. I got it cut into a short jawline length bob. It looks really good I think! I got compliments! i feel very pleased with it.

I decided last month I need to pay more attention to self care and grooming. So next month I'm going to get my hair coloured.

I know I could google but why aren't figs vegan?
And is owning a pet really exploiting animals? What about rescue dogs?

TofuTuesday · 20/10/2026 23:19

@RampantIvy some varieties of figs require pollination via female wasps who then die and are absorbed into the fig. I just avoid them as I can never remember exactly what’s safe and which types.

We did rescue our cat via a shelter, which is obviously a good choice to improve the life of a discarded or rejected animal. but I kind of align to the thinking in this article generally. Personally I won’t have another pet https://www.vegansociety.com/news/blog/veganism-and-companion-animals
