Just wondering if anyone is interested in a vegan chat thread , inspired by a reply I gave on another vegan thread ,I don't know any vegans to just chat to.
We are a vegan family, but other than that ,I don't know any vegans,I'm not in any vegan groups.
It's actually a big part of my life ,that I don't really get to talk about at all.
Be nice to chat to any other vegans, especially at night when I often can't sleep

Hey! I have a small baby so I’m awake at night too 😂

We are on our last nap of the day right now before bed I think. It’s such a mad dash to make and eat dinner in the final wake window. I think it’s going to be rice, freezer veg and tofu for dinner… again! What are you planning?

Springswallow · 11/01/2026 05:20

Sorry I didn't see your message,I actually slept well last night ..first time in ages ,so wasn't up chatting on here .
Dinner last night was jacket spuds all round with the bosh pizzas .
Will probably do a roast dinner today as it's Sunday.
Are you planning on bringing baby up vegan ..we were all vegan when my DC were 3/4 years old ,but my mil put huge pressure on me to revert back to vegetarian, and I'm sad I didn't stand up to her and continue being vegan .my DD says it would of been great to of been vegan from 3 .
As it is,my eldest ds went vegan first age 17 , followed by my DD a year later ,then me a year after then my DH a year after and lastly my youngest ds age 14 went vegan ..so we all did it when it felt right for us .I went vegetarian age 12 with a lot of push back from my parents, and DC were vegetarian their whole life and now vegan ..I've been vegan I think 9 years now ,I've lost track a bit

@Springswallow sorry I am only seeing your reply now.

We have a fairly convoluted plan! I am vegetarian from birth and vegan since 2012. My husband is vegan about 10 years.

We want to expose the baby to all allergens in her first year of solids. This will include dairy, eggs and fish (not molluscs for now as that tends to develop later). I’m not willing to do it in the house so my sister has said she will help. Following that, we will raise her vegetarian, but obviously plant based at home. What I want to avoid is her feeling restricted at parties, school treats etc and the gorging when she gets the chance (this was me in 2012 and discovering Oreos!) I am hoping she will then make her own choice at some point. We will talk to her about why we choose now to eat certain foods and show the alternatives we enjoy.

FunnyOrca · 06/02/2026 22:44

Also, I’m laughing at my last post as we once again had rice, freezer veg and tofu for dinner! I’m craving some noodles but baby is wanting to he held through dinner. I’m really enjoying this time but also looking forward to her weaning (and maybe sitting in her own chair?)

Have you made any good recipes lately?

Mine all made their own choices
I remember in 1998 trying to find a formula milk that didn't have fish oil in .
Eventually I did find one ..it was vile .
But I definitely don't remember any vegan ones ,so probably would of difficult having a vegan bottle fed baby then ..which were when mine were babies ..
So I'm glad mine got to choose for themselves.
No I haven't made any good recipes at all ..
Just the usual ones the family will accept
I need to experiment though, any recommendations??

It is really nice to hear that all your children chose veganism themselves. I hope my daughter does too, but it’s up to her.

I haven’t made anything very interesting. We have been eating so much rice since the baby arrived. It’s so easy to just bung it in the rice cooker but I’m craving variety!

Springswallow · 08/02/2026 13:48

I'm really fussy and don't like rice ..I don't even know how to cook it 😔.
I love tofu though,it's my favourite

Had you noticed how there was a lot less vegan products in the shops ..it seems like every time I shop there less vegan products.
Do you remember all the lovely wicked products that Tesco did ..all gone

Hiya, another vegan here. You're both so lucky to have your husbands and kids going vegan. I am the only one in the family, the others dont seem to care (much) about animal welfare, which is incredibly disheartening.
I often cant sleep thinking about the fate and lives of farm animals, and human cruelty. So wish they could be free and loved.

RampantIvy · 10/10/2026 23:28

I hope you don't mind me joining. I'm not vegan, but I eat a lot of vegan meals because I like loads of different types of food. I went to a really good vegan food festival in Wakefield last weekend and bought some amazing vegan cheese.

It is cashew nut based and has that umami taste that mass produced coconut based vegan cheese doesn't.

DD has also noticed the lack of vegan foods in shops and reckons that it is because being vegan is less trendy these days.

If anyone is in Sheffield I recommend Church

I feel the same ,I remember crying at a field of cows when I was a teenager

Does anyone know if a protein/ collagen power to stir in to coffee exists.. obviously vegan ..and maybe vanilla flavour or something

OP posts:
MoodyMargaret11 · 12/10/2026 05:44

Sorry cant answer the collagen question, but thinking about your comments on reducedvegan options at supermarkets. Up until recently I thought Tesco had a quite good selection, much better compared to other shops. Last few times I went it's been so meager, particularly the frozen section - lots of vegetarian (Quorn and products with cheese) but hardly anything vegan! I cant believe veganism is dwindling down, are a lot of people going vegetarian now?

Springswallow · 12/10/2026 09:46

@MoodyMargaret11 totally agree ,it's very upsetting
You get used to a particular product and then it's gone

OP posts:
Springswallow · 12/10/2026 09:49

I'm noticing lots of vegetarian Quorn as well
We have a large chest freezer that we keep for Christmas food and buy plenty of the food that comes out at Christmas then freezing it for later in the year ..lots of pigs in blankets and roasts ..
We were going to send the freezer to the dump as be bought a fridge freezer to replace it ..but decided we would it as an extra

Oh that's a great idea, you get to have some 'extras' throughout the year.
Although in my experience, the Xmas stuff can be pretty disappointing - ok for a normal meal, but not nice enough for a special celebration. Often looking better than it tastes too.
I've tried some home made xmas meals from scratch, including desserts - they take time but are really delicious, even according to the carnivores.

Springswallow · 13/10/2026 12:16

@MoodyMargaret11 ..I'm actually not a good enough cook to make things from scratch..
So I don't very often
I try to buy the main turkey replacement from most places in Dec and we have a practice Christmas dinner around 15 Dec to try out the mains and see which we like

That's really clever, I should try it this year :)) And having 2 Xmas dinners essentially, sounds fun.
Do you end up with meat eating guests though, or do you keep the house veggie?

Springswallow · 16/10/2026 20:56

Oh no ,no meat eaters
The smell of turkey really lingers in people's houses so we avoid visiting around Christmas and no one comes to us ..but we are 6 vegans,so plenty for me to cook for
We do our visiting before Christmas,so we do see people

OP posts:
Springswallow · 16/10/2026 20:58

I do a similar meal to Christmas day ,on boxing day ..we don't tend to like buffet foods ,so boxing day was always difficult to know what to cook to make it special,so I use the turkey substitutes I didn't use on Christmas day .
Desert is always ben and Jerry's vegan offerings

I'm not 100% vegan. DH is about 95% vegan. But we are both aiming for it. At the moment any slips are due mostly to not being hyper vigilant.

£27 - how much did you buy? 🤣
I dont tend to eat chocolate, mostly wafers and biscuits. But recently tried some nice bars from Aldi. They come in smaller individual wraps inside (5 I think) which gets me to slow down and not eat the entire thing at once lol

Hey, 95% is pretty darn good! Even if it was lower, being mindful and appreciative of animal lives is what matters imo. I only recently went "properly" vegan, there were things I thought I'd miss but been pretty good.
