Just wondering if anyone is interested in a vegan chat thread , inspired by a reply I gave on another vegan thread ,I don't know any vegans to just chat to.
We are a vegan family, but other than that ,I don't know any vegans,I'm not in any vegan groups.
It's actually a big part of my life ,that I don't really get to talk about at all.
Be nice to chat to any other vegans, especially at night when I often can't sleep

It's wool, suede and leather which mean we don't call ourselves vegan, they were all purchased many years ago, and not used often so they are still in good condition.
I don't say we are plant based either, we are just trying to make better choices.

Thank you @TofuTuesday that was an interesting read.
Every day is a school day.

@RampantIvy some varieties of figs require pollination via female wasps who then die and are absorbed into the fig. I just avoid them as I can never remember exactly what’s safe and which types.

We did rescue our cat via a shelter, which is obviously a good choice to improve the life of a discarded or rejected animal. but I kind of align to the thinking in this article generally. Personally I won’t have another pet https://www.vegansociety.com/news/blog/veganism-and-companion-animals

https://www.veganfoodandliving.com/features/are-figs-vegan/

Interesting read
I totally agree with a lot of the exploitation of animals as pets. Birds in cages and turtles in tanks , abhorrent !
I do have 3 cats though, from a small local animal charity. They have a good life , warm , fed, access to the garden and to roam independently . Ive always had cats since a young adult. But this article is very interesting indeed so thank you

I'm a shiny new vegan. DH is as close to vegan as anything and he was the one who inspired me.

For DH- it's ethics. This may be outing because we have talked about IRL but that's fine. We lived for a decade or so in the Balkans and butchering of animals was done right in front of you where we lived. I recall we walked past a goat who was being butchered and his goat friend who was next was shaking in fear. We both went vegan then.

Then we returned to the UK we bot started eating meat. Because it came in nice little packages covered in plastic and we (or at least me) could pretend it wasn;t what it was.

For a time I would buy from our local butcher and spend more money in the hope that it was more 'humane'.

DH got to it for good way before I did. I was a keen cook and I was very intent on cultural food experiences that included meat which kept me blocked I think.

I then shifted because I have a number of auto immune conditions and when researching books like Dr Michael Greger's 'How Not To Die' and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, all the research stacked up that for my conditions avoiding animal products was a Very Good Thing.

Now, I describe it as my diet catching up with my ethics. But it was the health aspect that gave me the final nudge.

I have not gotten rid of leather etc because I don't think that it's right to dispose of anything that an animal has died for. But I most emphatically will not buy animal products again.

DH inherited from an uncle a huge case of Victorian taxidermy about 3 years or so back. Turns out it's highly collectible. So we sold it at auction for mega bucks and then donated the lot to the RSPB (most of the poor animals were birds).

So - that's my story I think.

Had similar experience to yours in my childhood, absolutely loathed and felt distressed over what happened (in my case they were hens and later a sheep that I thought could keep as a pet). Despite those strong feelings, however, I still continued accepting the neatly packaged meat until many, many years later when I realised the cruelty of it all. Funny how we don't or wont make the connection, even when it's right in front of us!

That's so true
My daughter went vegan way before me and kept trying to tell me about the dairy industry,as I was vegetarian not vegan
I just didn't want to hear it ,as I didn't think I could give up cheese
So we do shut our minds to cruelty
I can only imagine that's what everyone else does

I think so too. I recall once we had an injured bird in our house and we got a local rescue to come and get it. That evening we were eating roast chicken (me too) and my mother was going on and on about how much she loves birds and 'can't bear' to think of them hurt.

I'll confess I was also eating the chicken then and at the time the thought passed through my mind 'This is such hypocrisy' but I just stomped on the thought inside my own mind. Now this was before any of my children were born so has to be about 17 years plus ago but it's still something I think of quite often and wonder to myself how I couldn't see it properly in myself even.

Springswallow · 22/10/2026 17:08

Yet now it's so normal to me being vegan ,I don't even tell people,it doesn't occur to me to bring it up in conversation .
But when I was thinking about it , thinking about going vegan ,it felt like a huge mountain to climb to swap everything over to vegan ..yet in practice it really wasn't difficult

I think it helps I absolutely love every single vegan cheese I try ..
But I did leave a gap of 3 months going from vegetarian cheese to vegan cheese

Just back from the pub. DH very unusually suggested we go out for dinner. He doesn't drink so the pub no longer holds much interest for him. We went to a pub we haven't been to for years- because I had heard the owner had gone vegetarian recently and people on fb were saying the veg offerings had gotten better.

We had vegan sausages, mash and roasted vegetables. SO good! I suspect the vegan Richmond sausages. Lovely well-flavoured mash with lots of parsley. Mashed carrot and swede, red cabbage, vegan gravy, green beans, peas. It completely hit the spot. The ultimate in comfort food.

The Richmond sausages are the ones I like best too, however everytime I pick up a pack and see the name, I think of their meat sausages and feel like... I dont want to support that company. But then a lot of vegan food is made by meat or vegetarian companies, they wont go out of business just because vegans stopped buying.

NoHangoversToday · 22/10/2026 20:52

Yes I understand what you mean.

Over the half term DS1 has asked if we can go to our local greasy spoon. Their vegetarian breakfast has 'vegan sausages' and it's actually corn, peas, cauliflower all mixed together and crumbed. I'm not sure how they get it to stay in shape now I think about it. But I used to have that my preference even when eating meat.

Up thread we had the brief discussion about UPF. I was using soy mince for a chilli. I want to make a vegan shepherds pie soon and had thought I would use the soy mince but actually, I think I prefer green lentils. The mince- though quite nice - made me feel sort of bloated and a bit icky. Okay for a one -off, but I'm not sure it's going to become part of the regular rotation.

NoHangoversToday · 23/10/2026 04:35

Ugh- can't sleep. I am worrying about some RL issues.

What are people planning for Christmas? I usually make DH a wellington of some sort but the older he gets the less he can tolerate anything on the oily side of things (jus roll pastry included). I was thinking of stuffing a butternut squash with a mix of wild rice, pomegranate seeds and walnuts as the centrepiece and then ALL the veg (and vegan breadsauce..... mmmm........ ).

I feel the same ,I won't buy cathedral city cheese because of the abuse of cows on their dairy farms
Always try to buy from fully vegan where pissibr

I was like like Quorn when vegetarian, totally upset my stomach so I don't touch the vegan Quorn

If you wanted a less greasy pastry based main option would filo pastry fit the brief instead?

I hope you find a solution to your worries.

So ..we like to go to new places round the UK for a day out or small break ,and I'm always on the look out for a fully vegan place to eat ..
Not been to many so far
A few we went to have closed down
If you live near somewhere fully vegan can you tell me about it
So we went to Sunderland for my daughters graduation and found a lovely vegan cafe in the town centre called the good apple ... absolutely lovely staff , amazing biscoffi cake .. husband had breakfast burrito and daughter had a different one .
Then we went to a vegan animal sanctuary in Kent the retreat animal rescue...,and it was free to go in ,all the animals were rescued, but they had a vegan shop with vegan Yorkshire puddings ,all kinds of vegan food we had never seen before ,and cafe , husband and DC stuffed their faces ,the cafe was fully vegan ..then we spent £80 in the shop and everyone just picked what they wanted and they packed it all to keep it frozen for the 2 hour journey home for us
Then we went to green routes in Oxford Cowley ,omg ..the size of the portions.. literally one meal can feed two people..we have been there a few times absolutely love it
Then we have been a couple of times to the orange cafe bar in Mousehole Penzance..wow vegan cream tea ... unbelievable.and the other cakes are delicious to ,we sat outside with a view down to the sea .
On Thursday we are hoping to go teignmough in Devon to a cafe called nourish ..but son number 3 has thrown a wobbler saying why am I always try to go by train or bus when we have a perfectly good car ,and why do I need to always find somewhere vegan to eat !!!!!!!!! He's vegan too ,by his own choice..
So husband thinks a visit to castle might be less busy for him ...
Wonderful..not ..
So I doubt I'm getting to nourish on Thursday..
I'm sure we've been to others ..oh the happy Friday kitchen in Oxford was fantastic, went there lots before one time we turned up in 3 cars for someones birthday meal and it had shut down ,the place was empty

I am born and raised vegetarian, not vegan. But as we eat a mostly Indian diet, we have become 95% vegan as an Indian diet can be naturally vegan, relying on lentils, veggies and grains. We don't eat fake meat as we don't like it.

MissFizzyPop · 23/10/2026 11:23

Ooh I loved Happy Friday Kitchen @Springswallow ! Also agree that The Retreat is brilliant.

I've got VeggieWorld near me - a 100% vegan Chinese takeaway which is amazing! They used to have a sit-in option but not anymore.

Love reading this thread - something to brighten up my day each time 🦄
Rewinding back to the Xmas dinner question - what's everyone's favourite - or the plan for this year if you're ahead of me? ;))
I've seen a recipe for stuffed butternut squash before and even printed it off but not made it yet. Last year cooked a pithier from a vegan charity booklet and loved it.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 23/10/2026 22:36

I’ve seen a recipe somewhere for a stuffed seitan roast, might make that.

tillyandmilly · 23/10/2026 22:47

I am nearly vegan - vegetarian for 40 years - but cheese! All the vegan cheese has coconut in it - tried lots - all horrible! Any recommendations without coconut in it? All my family eating vegan only food at christmas - 6 of us - mixture of waitrose and Marks & Spencer main meals - vegan dishes - I buy the Yorkshire Puddings from Infinity Foods where I live in Sussex -
