Post yoga ache is strong but I've finally made it down into the next stone bracket! Yay!

Morning all! Will report food for the last 2 days and then catch up on the thread.

B: blueberry, banana, soya milk, hemp protein powder smoothie

D: hm minestrone type soup with frying pan toasties made with sourdough and hm 'mozzarella'
S: nectarine, pear

B: 2 slices of toasted sourdough, one with avocado and one with iow tomato slices, squeeze of lime, salt, pepper, chilli flakes and coriander leaves. And a nectarine/pineapple/ice smoothie. All looked so pretty I took a photo 😂

S: salt and vinegar kettle chips
D: nut roast, roasted new potatoes and parsnips with corn on the cob, green beans, carrots, peas, broccoli and gravy. Plum crumble and Swedish glacé ice cream for pudding. Nut roast was a packet one I haven't used before, quite nice (bit like sage and onion stuffing with nuts)

@Breathmiller - ooh those fajitas sound lovely
@cricketmum84 outdoor yoga does sound lovely, especially in the current warm September sunshine (I love this time of year) Apart from the wasps of course! I haven't had it for a few years (I walk but nothing else) but I love that post exercise ache (as long as it's not too severe lol)
@IJumpedAboardAPirateShip San Diego sounds amazing and I've been hankering after sushi since I watched HFW makes some in his eat more veg programme
@Pringlemonster - were they all the same flavour/type? More info needed
@goteam miso mushroom burgers sound interesting. Are they bought ones?

On the vegan label, I think it's fine to eat a vegan diet some days and bacon at the weekend but don't think it's ok to say that's being vegan. And the issue with that (for me) is that it perpetuates/creates confusion about what a vegan diet is. Same for people who say they're vegetarian but eat fish or chicken (neither of which is vegetarian of course!) No wonder we had/have the generation displayed by nana in the royle family asking Barbara if the visiting vegetarian could eat water thin ham 😂
Then I think there's another distinction to be made between a vegan diet and a vegan lifestyle. My diet is vegan, but not all of my life is. Replacing/addressing things one at a time, but may never have a vegan lifestyle. But it's the vegan lifestyle that would dictate no leather etc.

The figs thing isn't just figs, but there are some fruit/veg/nuts (including avocado and almonds) that when commercially grown need bees to be brought in and then transported between crops as they're required for pollinating the crops. Eliminating those from my diet isn't something I want to do, and if you listened to everything reported you could end up wanting to live a completely self sufficient lifestyle (such as how bad commercially grown avocados and almonds can be for local environments in terms of water consumption and how much is diverted from local, often poor communities).

@PartTimeDomesticGoddess yes they are. Dragonfly foods make them. Sold in most health food shops!

Breathmiller · 13/09/2020 12:48

The fajitas were so good we had them again last night Grin

goteam · 13/09/2020 12:50

Agree with PPs about vegan label. Vegans don't eat honey (or a bit of bacon!) and it does annoy me when people claim to be vegan but eat 'a bit of meat fish or dairy every now and then' because it makes it harder for us, like we are being awkward when asking for vegan food or asking for things not to have cheese in or be cooked in butter etc because 'other vegans don't mind'. I was vegetarian for years before becoming vegan and lots of my friends were or claimed to be and it used to really annoy me when they would say I was a 'strict' vegetarian for not eating parmesan, meat powder in crisps or gelatine and I wasn't strict. I was just actually a vegetarian. Same now as a vegan. If you eat a bit of meat or honey you aren't vegan and should leave the labels for people who are 100% avoiding animal products.

SerenityNowwwww · 13/09/2020 13:14

I find vegan versions of foods (so sausages, coleslaw etc) taste pretty unpleasant. I had the most amazing Greek vegan meal - but there was a ‘coleslaw’ type dish that looked nice A the first taste was lovely but there was a really horrible aftertaste.

As a veggie I would sometimes have a Quorn sausage - but they switched the recipe to vegan and produced vegan versions of the slices - both have a odd aftertaste.

To me vegan/veggie is like the old school ‘wholefood’ approach - whole grains, flavoured with herbs and spices, actual veggie/vegan recipes rather than a ready made ‘lasagne’ or ‘meatball stew’.

Being a vegan or veggie is like being a virgin - you either is or you ain’t...

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 13/09/2020 14:05

@SerenityNowwwww there's some I like and plenty I don't (vegan subs that is). I agree that some taste nice for the first mouthful but don't always stay tasting nice. They can be convenient as well as helpful for meals when I'm eating differently to the rest of the family. I think it's good that there is a lot more choice now, with signs only of that continuing. I think the wfpb (Wholefood plant based) approach is great, but isn't for everyone. I also quite like the label plant based as, to me at least, it strongly suggests food rather than lifestyle (as much as I like any label that is Grin)

@IJumpedAboardAPirateShip - I made your date and coffee smoothie for DD17 yesterday who was struggling after burning the candle at both ends. She said it was top tier. I took that to be a good thing 😂

SerenityNowwwww · 13/09/2020 14:11

I have to say the worst food I ever ate was Tofurkey. It was so awful that no one could eat it (now that has to bad around here for everyone to refuse to eat it).

A close second was the vegan ‘Cesar’ salad from M&S - I threw it out because it was so horrible. I am an absolute dustbin and there isn’t much I balk are!

I tend to make everything from scratch - and that’s 3 different dietary requirements. Thank god I enjoy cooking (mostly). Or sometimes it ends up vegan for all of us. Made a really nice pasta last with a mushroom and kale sauce and huge salad (and some homeless bread).

ppeatfruit · 13/09/2020 14:54

Ref. vegan subs. Iam an inveterate label reader, if I don't like the sound of them, and if there are too many additives etc. forget it. (I don't eat coconut or cashews oh or houmous\chickpeas !!) which of course leaves me with a very slim choice in the shops, Waitrose is terrible for too many ingredients too, their hot cross buns had 40 !!

So, of course, I have to do a lot of home cooking from scratch.

Serenitie IMO we don't have to have labels, if a person is trying to buy organically, and cutting down on factory produced animal items, also waste (so wanting to make a difference in the world), then it's great. It's a bit tricky having 3 rescued cats and feeding them even a veggie diet!

Breathmiller · 13/09/2020 19:22

I like alternatives. As long as something is vegan then it is fine with me. I agree a lot aren't very nice so if I couldn't get the kind I like then I would not bother.

I love nothing better than cooking using veggies, nits, seeds, lentils and other more healthy vegan ingredients to cook from scratch but i like the alternatives for ease.
We have had a busy day amd all had sausage sandwiches for tea. A mix of vegan and meat. With the mest eating kids happy to have the vegan ones because they prefer them.

Breathmiller · 13/09/2020 19:22

"Nits" Grin that wouldn't be vegan?! Grin

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 13/09/2020 22:35

@Breathmiller omni DD14 only eats Richmond meat free sausages now as she says she prefers them too

B: pineapple, spiced porridge with soya milk, sultanas, seeds and crunchy brown sugar
S: 2 small slices of sourdough with naturli and peanut butter, salt and vinegar kettle chips
L: 2 small slices of sourdough with naturli, 1/2 tin of baked beans and nooch
D: big salad, quiche, corn on the cob and peri peri wedges. Plum crumble and Swedish glacé ice cream

@SerenityNowwwww I once got some tofurkey "bacon" and it was literally the worst thing I have ever tried. Never ever again.

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 14/09/2020 07:06

Yay glad your daughter liked the breakfast smoothie @PartTimeDomesticGoddess

I love beyond sausages and will occasionally buy beefless crumbles but agree all the deli meats, tofurkey, even the burgers which I used it love I’m over really

Last day of my mini break, had avocado toast and a Bloody Mary for brunch, a date/nut bar thing on the journey home, a peach as a snack and DH cooked from scratch (literally milled the flour) tofu ricotta stuffed ravioli with fresh tomato balsamic sauce which was delicious. Finished off with a cheese less cheese cake 😋

Back on the wagon tomorrow!

SerenityNowwwww · 14/09/2020 07:49

My original recipe but I use almond butter, @PartTimeDomesticGoddess subbed PB so you have her to thank for that

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 14/09/2020 21:21
