In terms of housing. I live in the pretty part of a big Scottish city and you can get a 80 square meter 2 bed flat for that here.

Half a one bed flat (East Dulwich).

A fair choice of fairly tiny 2 bed flats (60 sqm) or larger 1 beds.

Within 3 miles there is a rather tempting probate sale of a 3 bed ex council semi in a nice quiet road. Needs gutting and modernising, possibly demolishing if you could get planning permission but I don’t think it would ever gain back what you spent on it if you did that.

Coastal Devon.

Within a mile of me (not the naice bit) is a choice of:

Bog standard 3 bed semis that need modernising, no garage but off road parking.

2 bed bungalows, semi detached and renovated or detached and in need of renovation.

I’m in a rural area in Scotland. There are some new houses being built in a nearby hamlet and for £300K you can get a 3 bed, 2 bathroom semi-detached bungalow.

But for a fair bit less than that, there is a beautiful 4 bedroom, 1 bathroom terraced town house for sale a few miles away. It’s a grade A listed heritage property in a world heritage site. How I would love to buy this!

In another nearby village, you can buy a modern 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom flat for less than £60K.

Same here. Houses are millions round here. But also around 250k as well. Lots of different options

My parents house is possibly nearly a million, might have dropped of late mind you.

Nice two bedroom apartment possibly with a balcony.

There's couple of retirement flat in those over 50s developments and then a few auction properties with guide prices of £300k they'll likely go for more and are in a very poor state - one is clearly severely water damaged and one is badly fire damaged.

There's a 2 bed terrace which looks ok and liveable - I wonder if it's a cash only property or has something seriously wrong with it as it is suspiciously cheap.

It worries me as I don't think I'll be able to buy a house when DH and I separate.

If I look within 5 miles of me (80 miles out of London), there are over 1000 properties and if I specify houses only, there are over 400.

A nice 2 bed cottage or a more utilitarian 3 bed terraces semi.

Nice countryside, Peak District adjacent, handy for M1, commutable to several large towns and cities. Outstanding schools all the way through.

2 bed flat/house

Canny few, 2,3,4,5 beds here in the north east.

3 bed 1930s semi, a 4 bed 1960s semi, or a very poky 4 bed detatched new build. It's a nice town near a famously-not-nice bigger town and there are very few jobs here save for two big national employers.

A nice one bed flat in the nice city I live…and ropey/needs improvement other bigger things.

London, 1 bed flats typically

I’m in a desirable village in the SE - nothing. In the nearest commuter town a 1 bed flat or 2 bed not so nice flat.

South east. A park home or a 65m2 flat over a shop within 3 miles. If you go to 5 miles you can get a 2 bed semi or terrace, in a dodgy area.

In one of the nicer parts of my city, 300k would get you a very nice 4 bed detached bungalow.

Maybe a bedsit or a one bed at best but it would be in a rough end of town.

A parking space. Maybe a studio with a single bed.

That's just a little more than what my house cost, bought < 2 yrs ago. ex council house semi that had a dodgy roof, limited parking, sad bathroom, could use "modernising"

South yorkshire, leafy suburb. If you can stretch to 325k, you can get a 3 bed semi a couple of miles from here, usually from the 1930s period, which will need a LOT of doing up.

If you move further up the hill, you might strike lucky with a different interwar 3 bed semi that is nicely done up, and with a good garden, but in the catchment area of a school that is improving but not fully trusted yet.

If you go further afield in town, 100k will get you a new build flat (with massive service charges!) or a 2 - 3 bed in an area where new door and window locks will be your first priority.

Alternatively, a couple of miles in the opposite direction is a yet-to-be-built place being advertised at 4.5 million.

It's a crazy world.
