What's with these parents taking massive trolleys when they go out for a day with preschool kids?

Is it something that we didn't know that we didn't have back in the day when we all just seemed to manage or are they unnecessary for lazy kids?

Many assumptions and angriness in this post.

I have children, small ones. I dont use a wagon because the big one can walk and is 7, so can walk quite far. If I had 2 small ones I would use one. Instead I use a pram, which also requires spatial awareness, but as its pushed in front of me and not dragged behind me, is a bit easier not to whack people in the ankles.

On sunday I was stood still. Not on a path, watching what was happening on the stage. In that instance it wasn't my responsibility to watch out for anything.

Also, there was no criticism of children in any of my posts. My criticism is parents with no spatial awareness.

Quite right. Parents should be staggering around carrying multiple children, a picnic, toys, bikes, scooters and half the contents of the house. And a fan indeed. Such notions. They should be hot, sweaty, miserable and buckling under 20 kg of child, with at least one full scale tantrum under way, just like the good old days. That’s the British way.

It's easy for people to winge about these being the lazy option, not everyone has a car and these would be a good option for getting about when you don't. If you don't have a car, you may end up walking more, but people will just see an older kid in a cart/buggy and presume they are lazy when it's the same as a kid in a car seat, using it to get to a place where kids will then get out.

Public transport often involves more walking as you have to walk from the bus stop to a destination, rather than getting out at a carpark directly to said destination.

I can't find much on Google but if someone worked out a method of harnessing the waggon to both sides of the wheechair with the person pushing standing between and able to use both hands on the chair it sounds like it would be a real help for lots of people.

I have one! They’re amazing for taking picnics, a little pop up uv tent and everything else we need.

I think there were only the really expensive Radio Flyer ones when my kids were little - I always aspired to one.

Yes it had a whiff of “back in my day I’d have made my child walk , why should children and parents not have it as hard as I did” about it.

They’re brilliant. I’ve been seeing them at festivals for probably 20 years for kids. We’ve had one for ages for the beach and picnics for all the crap. Cool boxes etc are heavy!

We had one for a festival to kart stuff around with us in the day then LO would sleep in it in the evening and we'd roll him back to the tent. Only other thing we've used it for is the beach but for the stuff rather than kids. I understand childminders using them for lots of kids but otherwise one or two kids just use a pushchair surly it's easier to push?

I think they’re great, but as pp said, people driving them, lose all sense of spatial awareness. Back pack wearers are even worse .

Depends how old they are really. I have an autistic 7 year old and he’s too big for a pushchair but I think he’d happily be pulled along in a trolley when he was struggling with walking.

Only on MN would you have posters kicking off with ageist comments because someone suggested children can ... walk !!!

I remember seeing cute trolleys with kids in in the 1980s at an open air museum in Holland, and thinking they looked like a great idea. Shame it's taken so long to get here!

It’s literally just stupid to try and claim preschoolers and toddlers can walk as far as adults.

I think there's a time and a place for them. They also need to be used with consideration. Disneyland was overrun with them a couple of years ago and it was actually really dangerous as many people just had no awareness of what was around them.

We have one for festivals. I keep thinking we should take it to the beach but we prefer to be less encumbered by stuff generally. There were lots at the beach the last couple of days - less with kids in and more full of beach chairs and cool boxes.

I only wish these had been around 40 years ago when I had my children! They are a brilliant solution to the nightmare that is ‘a day out with young children’ 😵‍💫

I live a 5 minute walk from the beach. I go a cart and a tent that folds open and clicks at the top to stay in place last year.... Best purchases I have made since having my son!
I can fit the beach toys, picnic etc all in with ease. My son tends to ride his scooter alongside me on the way there. On the way back we stop for an ice cream so he can sit in while i pull it home
Before getting it I would end up with a load of stuff loaded onto me and the buggy and was like a pack horse!

Why do people think because they 'managed' that more practical things shouldn't be used to make life easier? Simply 'managing' isn't the peak of life, things can be better

I remember seeing these years ago in the US and thinking they were brilliant - and now my kids have them for their child associated stuff. For those saying ‘in the old days they walked’ they’re generally used for beach/ park days out when the kids are running about like crazy. We should surely be grateful children are being taken out for such outings.

It’s funny how we are quite happy to accept other labour saving devices like washing machines, dishwashers, robot hoovers, cars even, but look down on these. I am sure my mum was a lot fitter dragging the washing from the twin tub with the tongs to the mangle but I am not going back there.
