What's with these parents taking massive trolleys when they go out for a day with preschool kids?

Is it something that we didn't know that we didn't have back in the day when we all just seemed to manage or are they unnecessary for lazy kids?
they seem to have bloody fans attached them as well

I was ridiculously excited, (aged 44) to be given a wagon to carry medical equipment, while on pilgrimage last year. It was my new toy all week. 🤣

Seen them used at festivals (kids fall asleep in them amongst the crates of beer )
Seen them for carting stuff from the car to the beach too.

I have stronger views on pushchairs for dogs if I am honest !

I saw a dog in a baby carrier a while ago. 🙃Looked ridiculous with it's legs just sticking out in front (and not particularly comfortable either). The guy carrying it was definitely enjoying the attention though.

Multipe kids - that where I see benefit.

Plus it has wider applicablity after they are beyond age of pushchairs in later childhood but there is still loads of crap to carry round.

I’ve never seen anyone using them with kids older than 4/5 hence not seeing a benefit over a buggy.

That said even with my 6 kids I do sometimes wonder what on earth the mountain of stuff some people always have is 😂

Can see the benefit on a beach day etc that some folks have mentioned.

Total gamechanger when we got one. They DO mean you can take more crap, but that means everyone has more fun. The difference between 'we can take what we can collectively carry' and loading up a trolley is a day at the beach where the adults can relax and the children can move between building sandcastles, playing cricket, playing football, playing frisbee, flying a kite, bodyboarding (with an adult), reading, napping in the shade of a parasol... It's the difference between a picnic lunch, and a feast with snacks. Plenty of drinks, no need to spend loads trekking to a cafe. Wetsuits, sea shoes and blankets on colder days.

I'm such an advocate. A full day of free activities you already own on wheels, rather than kids whinging after 2 hours that they're bored or cold or wet. Nothing gets lost or left behind either. It's a beach cupboard. We used to keep all the toys and games in a couple of bags for life ready to sling in, all the wetsuits, snorkels and beach shoes in another, a third with blankets and picnic blankets. Chuck the beach chairs, parasol, picnic and drinks and body boards on top and you're good to go. Lifesaver as a single mum/solo parent for the day.

Nothing to do with lazy kids or lazy parenting. Some things are an improvement on the way we did things in the past.

Our local bus company have had to put up signs stating that dog pushchairs do not have priority over babies in pushchairs in the pram space or the wheelchair space on the buses.

Bloody fans??? For pre school aged children on a hot sunny day???? That's just lazy parenting if you ask me. Back in the day we'd slap on some baby oil and call it a day! Next they'll be drinking plenty of water and putting on suncream! PC and health and safety gone mad I'll tell you that much for free

3luckystars · 21/07/2026 11:54

I also have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, I have never seen one in real life but will look it up now.

Swissmeringue · 21/07/2026 11:55

We have one for the beach. It's really handy.

My kids are pretty good walkers and 4 years apart in age so I've never really felt the need to take it on days out. But a friend brought hers to a theme park recently and it was really nice not having to lug big backpacks around and it had a little canopy so the kids could get in and stay dry when it rained.

MidnightPatrol · 21/07/2026 11:56

How shocking to hear people are using fans in the heatwave to help keep their children cool.

They should just be left to be hot and uncomfortable.

TicklishReader · 21/07/2026 11:59

I think they are brilliant. I have two teens now, but would have loved one when they were wee.

Anything to make life a bit easier.

reluctantbrit · 21/07/2026 12:00

That's why we had a buggy with us until DD was nearly 4. After that it was back to large backpacks to carry everything for a full day out.

I have been to zoos in Germany where you can rent one, DH always thinks they should have them in adult sizes as well.

My eldest is 30 and we used to have one in the garden. It was technically a toy but would absolutely have been usable for a day at the beach.
I think they're a good way of making it possible to have a full day on the beach because you can take enough food and drink and stuff to play with.

PretzelChoc · 21/07/2026 12:04

I always wanted one, but didn't invest.

I remember debating bringing the Phil and Ted's on a zoo day when DC were 10, 7 and 5. But I was very glad I did.

The cool bag went on the back seat and the picnic blanket, water, coats umbrellas, sun cream, change of clothes, first aid stuff, books, etc went on the basket/main seat. All 3 kids sat in it for a rest at various times during the day.

Sure, we could have carried everything but it's not as pleasant a day out then with sore backs as well as tired legs, and not as much stamina for a long day.

Only ever seen people use them at the beach here in New Zealand. And they all seem to be decorated in beach type patterns. Maybe people use them for festivals but I haven't been to one for ages so wouldn't know.

GetOnWithLife · 21/07/2026 12:07

We have one that is used for netball carnivals, it’s so handy to load up chairs, umbrellas and esky’s and only have to make one trip to the car. My kids are far too tall to fit in it now though.

another option is to keep the kids in the shade, but SOME parents are so keen on getting their kids in bed by 6pm at the latest to have their me-time, they see nothing wrong in taking the kids out at the worst time of the day 😂

I shouldn't laugh, because it's always so depressing to see babies, toddlers and kids in the full sun only because the parents want to make the most of the car park they paid for or some ridiculous reason.

YourWinter · 21/07/2026 12:10

I have an “old lady” 2-wheel shopping trolley for trips to the beach with one or more DGS. We see lots of people with 4-wheel festival trolleys and envy them. But with DGS in car seats, plus dogs in the boot, the shopping trolley can stand in the footwell behind the front seat and I’m not sure a festival trolley would fit in my car!

I think once you get to 7-8 it's more so they don't have to carry stuff - but by time eldest was 4 we had three kids and I think it would have been helpful to be able to pop all three in back with stuff.

Though I think you need wide open clear spaces - hence you see them in parks and beaches and not really round shops.

It's another helpful transport system good in some situations - we didn't have it so managed without - but think it would have been useful at times.

Pistachiocake · 21/07/2026 12:22

A lot of people might have health conditions/disabilities so this could be very helpful.

ChoccyHobknob · 21/07/2026 12:22

Can we have a picture so I know what you're talking about?

I've seen some at festivals and faires but no brollys etc!

Fupoffyagrasshole · 21/07/2026 12:28

well now i use the buggy fir storage - but id absolutley get one when buggy goes

when we have days out we do bring loads - like lunches and snacks and srins to save money - so we do need loads

I can't afford to drop 50£ for lunch so we bring loads

we are often out for the entire day and without a car so its so useful

ItsPickleRick · 21/07/2026 12:28

I’m all for anything that makes a parent’s life easier.

ThisQuirkyAmberMember · 21/07/2026 12:29

They’re brilliant OP! We used to live in Germany and LOADS of people have them there…so convenient to chuck everything into & pull around! Can’t go wrong with them imo!

AguNwaanyi · 21/07/2026 12:32

I'll give it to Mumsnet that you lot find new and creative ways to be annoyed about stuff that's none of your business everyday.
