VB's dress on Mrs Burnham - horrible

I'm not a fashion expert and I really don't care much for it but this was the most horrible dress I have ever seen. Even on a coathangar bodytype like VB herself it wouldn't look good but on an average body it's just hideous. That's 850 £ unwisely spent. She could and should have gotten a dress from M&S for 50£ and actually looked good.

All this is a million miles from feminism. It does depress me, how far I think we've come, then I see how Ms Van Heel gets trashed for her outfit, and what vile language has been used against her.

This. The only men who tear women down are pathetic loser incels, who make up a small proportion of the male population (far smaller than the media would have you believe) Unfortunately, the number of women who say mean things about other women is far, far higher.

I think this thread has also thrown up a significant problem with modern responces to politicians; instead of disagreeing with what Burnham actually said, he's described as "bitching". These attitudes just reduce everything to the worst kinds of soundbites. So simplistic His opinions, his policies, his wife's outfit.

I've only read the OP's comments and can't see it's come up but I've read the Ms van Heel has had a double mastectomy for preventative reasons. Her sister died of breast cancer aged 39 and Ms van Heel was tested and carried the gene.

Whilst it is a situation that no woman would ever wish to find herself in, I don't think women who have had a mastectomy or double mastectomy deserve more empathy or respect than those who haven not. That's just another way of weighing the worth of women. Every woman's dignity has the same value, regardless of what she has or hasn't been through.

This thread is discussing targeting a particular woman who has had a life changing and body altering surgery.

Of course no woman should be subjected to such judgement but this thread is about a particular woman, and she has lost both her breasts. Women slating other women is repugnant but tearing down someone who has had a double mastectomy, based on her figure and shape, needs to be called out. I assume that losing both your breasts probably means you feel a bit more shit about your body than the average woman. It's kicking someone when they are down.

Although I am hopeful Ms van Heel had access to all the support, counselling and reconstructive surgery she needed to remain positive and confident.

Your opinion, which you are entitled to, but thats all it is. If she was happy and comfortable, that is all that matters. Everyone can express themselves as they see fit.

My only criticism is that it’s an £850 designer label, considering how socialist Burnham is that seems not very ‘man of the people’.

But, was it hideous, did it ‘not do her any favours’, or ‘not flattering’ ? Wow, bitchy much? What happened to (true) body positivity, and sisterhood? I have a little post-menopausal belly like that, and I’m willing to bet every single one of you that made a less than supportive comment about her has too. She looks comfy and happy, she can move and breathe and eat, because she’s not squeezed herself into shapewear or buttoned up a ‘flattering’ jacket.

Leave her alone, and let her husband try to get on with his job.
