VB's dress on Mrs Burnham - horrible

I'm not a fashion expert and I really don't care much for it but this was the most horrible dress I have ever seen. Even on a coathangar bodytype like VB herself it wouldn't look good but on an average body it's just hideous. That's 850 £ unwisely spent. She could and should have gotten a dress from M&S for 50£ and actually looked good.

Yes and it’s fine to have thay opinion, I think it’s nice to have your spouse support, it’s quite common, my husband has won an award at work, I’m going with him, it’s a partnered event, happy to support him in his big moment. It should be down to the individuals concerned, not you.

Lots of political convention is passé. Have you ever seen the state opening of parliament? Why change something for the hell of it? No rule book has been ripped up and the centre of government remains in Westminster, No 10 in the north is an outpost for a specific function.

I gave a talk recently. It was on a subject my DH is deeply uninterested in. He came anyway- nicely dressed- to support me as I was a bit nervous. Surely all spouses do that!

Marie-France Von Heel is no show pony. She's a normal, busy, working woman who likely picked a suitable dress out of her wardrobe that she bought with her own earnings, put it on and went along to support her husband. Probably didn't think too much about it because she has better things to think about.

I guess she will " know better" next time.

What good reason is she there for ? Is it her degree ? Her work ? None of that. She is there because she is MARRIED to him. The number of discussions on MN about women even getting married and how much that buys into the patriarchal system are many. How they have sold out etc. So on the one hand we have all of her accomplishments listed before and what an independent women she is but on the other she's trotted out because she's married to him.

Why not email him with your opinion and suggestions, after all he's not got much to do...

Yes. Lots of us accompany our husbands on important occasions in their lives. Spouses accompany their other halves when they receive awards, get decorations, attend Royal garden parties, not just women but men too. Every incoming woman PM has had her husband at her side. And you’re at it again - “trotted out” indeed. Were Dennis Thatcher, Philip May and Hugh O’Leary “trotted out”?
