VB's dress on Mrs Burnham - horrible

I'm not a fashion expert and I really don't care much for it but this was the most horrible dress I have ever seen. Even on a coathangar bodytype like VB herself it wouldn't look good but on an average body it's just hideous. That's 850 £ unwisely spent. She could and should have gotten a dress from M&S for 50£ and actually looked good.

Apart from the dress not being flattering on Ms Van Heel Burnham it was a bit tone deaf in these rather straitened times wearing a dress, as the PM’s wife, that cost £850.
Yes it was British but surely there was a more reasonably priced dress she could have worn to promote British fashion .

She wasn’t there promoting British fashion, she was wearing a dress she already owned. It happened to be by a British designer. And why on earth should she pretend to be poorer and wear something cheaper, so Labour supporters felt they didn’t nominate another multi millionaire but a man of the people?

well they didn’t, they’ve another multi millionaire in the chair. May as well own it.

Do you know where Lady Starmers dress was from do you know how much that cost? .do you expect these women to be frugal with their clothes i don't understand your point.

Andy Burnham in his chore jackets is hilarious. I mean I like chore jackets, my husband wears them, but "man of the people"? Hardly

“Lady Starmer “ got a freebie from me and em. Don’t you remember the scandal about Labour and all their freebie grabbing when they came to power. Her and raynor were wearing free clothes from me and em.

I didn't know that, yes i heard about some freebies .but didn't know her dress on Monday was given to her. Surely she can afford her own dress

As far back as I can recall all incoming PMs (other than Ted Heath who was single and this led to various rumours) have been accompanied by their spouse so I am confused as to why you think her presence was "part of his PR spin". Imagine if she hadn't been there, I can just see the headlines "Even Burnham's wife thinks he's a fake" "Does Andy's missus no show mean his premiership is a no go?"

Yes but it doesn't match with all the she's such an independent woman blah blah stuff, does it ? Is it archaic ?

Calliopespa · 23/07/2026 12:01

But apart from the odd fit and colour of the dress, choosing the Beckham brand wasn't the best idea.

I suspect that anti-Beckham feeling is driving much of this thread, but instead of the brand being the sole focus, poor Marie-France's shape has come under fire in a way I feel people would have felt was beyond the pale had that dress been from Phase Eight.

I don't think it's anything to do with VB. could have been any brand.

It’s political convention. As another pp pointed out there’d have been an absolute brouhaha in the media if she hadn’t been there - speculation about their marriage, her faith in his government and anything else they could make up - she even suggested the possible headlines for you. An incoming PM is always accompanied by their spouse. However feminist they are, most women support their husband at important moments in his life.

Sorry I was talking about when he came to power, I’ve no idea of her dress on Monday

It's an established convention, nothing more, nothing less. I don't think accompanying your spouse when they assume what is after all the highest office in the land is archiac in any way and as i have already pointed out there would have been a lot more "blah, blah" if she was a no show. As far as I can recall all former PMs spouses be they male or female have been independent in that they have had their own jobs. They were all with their spouses on the day they took up office .

Agree,

If you don't think there's any anti-Beckham sentiment in this thread, you haven't read it properly.

Any1ForTennis · 23/07/2026 19:33

I didn't like it as it wasn't to my taste in cut or colour.

Each to their own though.

Newsenmum · 23/07/2026 19:40

I quite like it. She’s a nice, feminine normal size.
i like ir.

Newsenmum · 23/07/2026 19:48

It’s a pretty colour and quite feminine. Is it because she’s curvy? Yes that’s what curvy women look like in dresses.

Think it’s more rhe cost and her clothes really are aimed at slim women.

She's a successful woman and has earned her own money. She can spend it how she wishes. I'm sure she's not on a dress allowance. Are we still in the days of a woman's clothes being a reflection of her husband?
This thread is so regressive.

Good points. The husbands have done this too.
The difference being that no-one critiques the husband's clothes in the same way!

Brightlittlecanary · 24/07/2026 10:57

I just find this thread so so dismaying, it gives all women a bad name.

here we have a successful woman, a good career, three kids, a stellar education, and women are almost salivating ripping her apart, about her dress sense, her body, her underwear,

it’s utterly fucking shameful. And in the next breath they will blame men, for their shitty behaviour. Or giving a tinkly laugh and saying we are just discussing fashion,

I guess it will never ever stop, women will always be their own worst enemies. That it doesn’t matter whay you achieve, there will always be a jeakous insecure woman waiting in the wings to rip you apart for your appearance.

Well you say this but I think that's it's regressive that a woman of these accomplishments has to turn up and parade about like a show pony to show the country that she supports him.

Yeah you said that. Extra points for including the words " tinkly laugh" 😂 . You are continually slating other posters for being judgemental but look in the mirror.

It’s political convention, for the umpteenth time. Do you not support your husband on occasions when it’s expected? I went to numerous extremely boring events because it was expected of me, it’s part and parcel of marriage, it being a team sport.

”Parade” “Show pony”! She walked and there were no discernible plumes from where I was sitting.

Yes for the umpteenth time but many things are convention but it doesn't mean they cannot be changed. I'm entitled to say that it seems a bit passé in these times especially with a guy who has ripped up the rule book with other things eg talk of relocating the centre of gov " up North" .
