VB's dress on Mrs Burnham - horrible

TheBlueKoala · 20/07/2026 19:42

I'm not a fashion expert and I really don't care much for it but this was the most horrible dress I have ever seen. Even on a coathangar bodytype like VB herself it wouldn't look good but on an average body it's just hideous. That's 850 £ unwisely spent. She could and should have gotten a dress from M&S for 50£ and actually looked good.

@Brightlittlecanary , but we’ve all been there. I can't say I have.

I borrowed a very pretty dress from my sister to wear to a wedding but in the photos I could see it was all wrong for me. The colour was too strong for me and the style was wrong.

Lucky you, many of us have bought a dress we love and found we gained a little weight.

Three children, breast cancer survivor, Cambridge degree, speaks 3 languages, wearing a Victoria Beckham dress, supporting British designers. Looks what ‘real’ women look like. 💙🧿💙

@Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice ,she looks fine, it's the dress that looks awful.
It might look ok on a very slender woman with a model's proportions.

No, that's not what I said, she looks perfectly nice in the dress. You obviously have some hangups about body size - you need to understand that's a YOU issue and other women aren't required to dress in a certain way to hide the real shape of their bodies from you.

myeyelashes · 22/07/2026 23:22

Brightlittlecanary · 22/07/2026 16:59

I think that says more about you and the likes of you. The first thing I didn’t see was hee stomach, how utterly judgmental and ridiculous. I saw a woman in a nice dress in a pretty colour and thought gosh how hard must that be to be forced into the limelight. I guess I didn’t realise how hard as some women sitting staring at her bloody stomach,

Such is life 🤷‍♀️

Not at all. The dress looks bad on the VB web site Edith Midi Dress In Black – Victoria Beckham.

Well make up your mind, your previous post said it 'might look OK' on a model's body.

Think a little more deeply about what you mean by a garment 'suiting' or 'flattering'. It's rooted in your ideal vision of a woman's body - you want any parts you deem unattractive to be downplayed or concealed.

That's your prerogative when you're dressing yourself. I do it too btw, I place all sorts of unrealistic expectations on myself about how I should look.

Where you've crossed the line is thinking other women are obliged to feel the same, and criticising them for daring to show any part of their body that you think isn't up to standard.

Don't tell me what I mean when it isn't what I mean at all. I really cannot be arsed with this shit.

I was thinking about this thread last night, and what it tells us, or whay it confirms,

some women are really fucked uo about weight. And they compete with and judge other women.

one poster even said the first thing she saw was her stomach, and can’t even see how fucked up that is, how judgemental.

she looks perfectly lovely, she’s not particularly over weight, she’s a huge amount of achievements under her belt, from her education, to her kids, to her career, to her health,

and some women are ripping apart her body, wanting her to dress to hide what they consider flaws, posting to make themselves feel superior to her, judging her for her body, her dress sense.

and then to cap it off, posting links to dresses they think she should have worn instead which are without exception, dated crap.

its always women on women, women attacking other women for their appearance, their bodies, for not meeting some beauty standard that they have prescribed in their own heads. Nothing about her achievements, who she is. Just did you see her tummy and how horrible is her dress.

its utterly shameful, and shows the women who indulge themselves in this shit for whay they really are, messed up about weight, competitive with other women, and insecure about themselves. Becaude no one secure in themselves does this,

dottiedodah · 23/07/2026 10:15

Sarah Vine wrote a piece ,in how difficult it is to choose something to wear in public for the first time. She is no doubt worried and a little nervous .Give her a break!

Oh give over, it's not that terrible that someone in the public eye is judged on their appearance. If Andy had turned out wifg trousers 2 sizes too small showing his bits you think that would have been completely un mentioned?
Most people in the public eye hire a stylist for this very reason. It's akin to going for an interview wearing something unconventional. Not an attack on womanhood.

Well that's a daft idea - it's not about competition with other women. I was raised to be neat, clean and tidy and yes maybe a bit too sensitive about showing off certain parts of my body. I'm one of the older women on here so yes raised in a time when people didn't have much money or choice even and some of this does persist with me. Yes I notice unflattering outfits as I am interested in fashion and style. I dress to minimise my " faults" - so what? It doesn't take away from the fact that I have accomplishments of the kind you attribute to the lady in question ( job, degrees etc) The fact that you resort to insults about people's character shows that you have already lost the argument ( if we class it as that). You are perfectly entitled to your thoughts about this as are others but there is no need to get into the character decimation.

I think there is a difference between commenting on celebrities who put themselves out there to be noticed and a woman who is simply being photographed because she is supporting her spouse.

Was there any need for her to be there though really ? It's part of his PR spin isn't it ? Slightly off topic I realise. No lectern as he's one of the common people so why maybe no wife?

Spouses traditionally accompany an incoming PM into Downing Street. They have done for as long as I can remember. Even when the spouses are men.

No lectern because apparently it is specially made for each PM , and every one takes their spouse if they have one, i suspect you are being deliberately obtuse though.

VoteForCountBinface · 23/07/2026 11:24

@Brightlittlecanary , you seem obsessed about wearing something flattering being something that downplays or conceals an unattractive body feature.

Some of us don't care what shape or size a woman is but can see if an outfit looks right on them or not.

Why are you so obsessed?

@IDontHateRainbows , there were plenty of comments about his IMO unremarkable running clothes.

I was wrong about the Lectren. Everything else stands. Spouses attend

There's some funny posts on this thread. People seem to think you mustn't say anything negative about Ms Burnham / Ms van Heel, but the poor fit of the dress was glaringly obvious.

This isn't about dissing a teenager's prom dress. It's that, at an important political moment in British history, attention was somewhat distracted by lilac satin in glaring sunlight, which highlighted how ill-fitting the garment appeared.

To me, van Heel seems really cool and interesting and will probably make a fascinating spouse of the Prime Minister. But apart from the odd fit and colour of the dress, choosing the Beckham brand wasn't the best idea.

I suspect that anti-Beckham feeling is driving much of this thread, but instead of the brand being the sole focus, poor Marie-France's shape has come under fire in a way I feel people would have felt was beyond the pale had that dress been from Phase Eight.

Blimey either you are Ms VH or has someone has made some rude comments about your shape/size so it triggers an insecurity? Do you want to tell us about it and we can take them down for you? 😂
By any measure Ms VH has won life’s lottery, she is intelligent, has a loving family, a good job and money. I’m sure she can cope with some comments saying her dress is not the most flattering for an important event.

I'm not quite getting the link between the wife and a lectern.😂Prop?

deeahgwitch · 23/07/2026 15:54

Apart from the dress not being flattering on Ms Van Heel Burnham it was a bit tone deaf in these rather straitened times wearing a dress, as the PM’s wife, that cost £850.
Yes it was British but surely there was a more reasonably priced dress she could have worn to promote British fashion .

As far back as I can recall all incoming PMs (other than Ted Heath who was single and this led to various rumours) have been accompanied by their spouse so I am confused as to why you think her presence was "part of his PR spin". Imagine if she hadn't been there, I can just see the headlines "Even Burnham's wife thinks he's a fake" "Does Andy's missus no show mean his premiership is a no go?"
