VB's dress on Mrs Burnham - horrible

I'm not a fashion expert and I really don't care much for it but this was the most horrible dress I have ever seen. Even on a coathangar bodytype like VB herself it wouldn't look good but on an average body it's just hideous. That's 850 £ unwisely spent. She could and should have gotten a dress from M&S for 50£ and actually looked good.

I hope if she is aware of the comments - which I guess she must be - she sees it for the small-minded nonsense that it is.

She is clearly a successful, intelligent woman who has also been a wife and mother and is very attractive with a change of body shape from when she was younger to one that is very natural in women of her age who are mothers and don't have the time to be obsessing over diet and exercise beyond what she needs to stay healthy and busy with everything she has on her plate.

I can only hope she feels exactly this and feels proud to have flown the flag for women her age and background. High time we were all able to be a bit more balanced about these things and stopped feeling any body that isn't representative of a 20-something's size 6 to 8 needs to be shrouded away from view. MN I have to say is one of the most unforgiving places of perfectly normal female bodies. How ironic.

And I am not talking body positivity and acceptance: I am talking perfectly, perfectly normal. She is not a large lady.

Well she obviously does care because she spent almost a grand on a dress. If she didn't GAF she probably would have pulled something she already had out of the closet.

Well I think there is a difference between caring about looking clean and groomed and not scruffy, and caring about whether people think you need to be wearing Spanx.

Wearing Spanx is not the answer, and I wouldn't suggest it to anyone.

Can you explain what "isn't suiting" her?

The colour is lovely on her.

The top half of the dress is very pretty on her around the shoulders and neckline.

I like that it is cutting her mid-calf, which a lot of women choose, but falls that inch lower.

@Brightlittlecanary , if the new PM was a Mandy Burnham and Frank her husband was by her side in an ill-fitting suit, I'm sure we'd have plenty to say.

I'm guessing it is her stomach as the first thing I saw was her belly . It is very obvious due to harsh sunlight, the material and the cut. These kind of discussions go on all the time on Style and Beauty. There are FB groups with this. There are millions of Reddit posts. Some care, some don't.

I'm sure that is what that poster means.

I also agree the sunlight in one shot was just really unfortunate (and she can't help that).

That thin, satiny fabric makes everyone looks bumpy - either from bones or flesh covering, even if they hardly have any - so I agree with that aspect of the dress choice being a bit less than ideal. But I do think more generally expecting middle aged women to dress to make their stomach look washboard flat is an issue we need to deal with.

ETA there was a similar thread on here about Victoria Starmer's tummy. She was in a green dress from memory.

I think that says more about you and the likes of you. The first thing I didn’t see was hee stomach, how utterly judgmental and ridiculous. I saw a woman in a nice dress in a pretty colour and thought gosh how hard must that be to be forced into the limelight. I guess I didn’t realise how hard as some women sitting staring at her bloody stomach,

Maybe it's time - on a website for mums - we accepted that a belly can be quite normal on women post childbirth and around perimenopause/menopause.

Lady Starmer's equivalent dress was fine.

It’s the opposite, starmers wife was gifted hers by me and em, in the labour freebie grabbing extravaganca that occurred when they took power. Burnham wife wore a dress she already had, which admittedly is a little tighter than it was lost time she wore it, but we’ve all been there.

I borrowed a very pretty dress from my sister to wear to a wedding but in the photos I could see it was all wrong for me. The colour was too strong for me and the style was wrong.

Accepting freebies highlighted just how vulgar Victoria Starmer was. Thank goodness we finally appear to have someone with some morals.

this thread is mad. The dress caused an online ruckus, most likely unintentionally, so was not a good choice for the occasion. She'll learn. The end.

Let's be honest, any mention of a designer label causes a meltdown on MN. It's hilarious. I'm amazed the tired old lines like 'I assumed it was a fake' or 'more money than sense' haven't been rolled out. 😂😂😂
