VB's dress on Mrs Burnham - horrible

TheBlueKoala · 20/07/2026 19:42

I'm not a fashion expert and I really don't care much for it but this was the most horrible dress I have ever seen. Even on a coathangar bodytype like VB herself it wouldn't look good but on an average body it's just hideous. That's 850 £ unwisely spent. She could and should have gotten a dress from M&S for 50£ and actually looked good.

This ⬆️. The OP's choices are terrible, imo. Far worse than the one worn by Ms Van Heel. At least hers was a nice colour.

How about this one- pure cotton :

I will send a message to Mrs Heel in case she needs further recommendations. And I will send a link for new shorts for Andy.

Pure Cotton Printed V-Neck Mini Dress | Sportscraft | M&S

This mini shirt dress by Sportscraft is a brilliantly bold piece, thanks to its modern print. Cut to a regular fit from pure cotton, it features a v-neckline and a full-length button fastening. It's finished with a tie waist and elbow-length saddle puf...

I think it looks nice. Nice colour and looks nice on the hips. Shows a slight bit of tummy but so what. Not many of us have ironing board stomachs once we reach our middle years. She's relatable.

TheBlueKoala · 20/07/2026 22:20

Well, that dress is objectively not flattering. To anyone. Ever. The only one to get her feelings potentially hurt is VB but I really don't think she's on MN.

....and you genuinely think that polyester animal print monstrosity you suggested would actually look better?

(Cost aside) why can’t women just wear what the hell they want because they want to (like the colour, feels good) without being publicly scrutinised and criticised? Is that where your mind goes when you see people - straight to a critical place? is that what you do to yourself? How would you feel if your choice of dress was publicly criticised and scrutinised.
“the most horrible dress I have ever seen… on an average body it's just hideous.”
Badly done.

To be honest, I expect high fashion brands to have high standards. Sarah Burton would never allow a client to leave her fashion house with such an ill-fitting dress. Also, she’s from Macclesfield. A far better choice, but probably a more expensive one too.

I found the colour a bit “My Little Pony circa 1989” tbh, but it just goes to show that your sartorial choices will never please everyone and we should all just wear what the hell we like as long as the children aren’t frightened. 😀

I'm not in the public eye, why would my outfit be publicly scrutinised? Still I manage not to dress that out of place. The dress did her no favours whatsoever. Do you think she cares what some bored mumsnetters are writing about her style? Anyone in the public eye will draw scrutiny. It was an odd choice. I doubt she is bothered.

Which bits of that dress do you think would suit her better than the one she chose?

Most of her dresses look like bias cut petticoats.

Yes. I just feel she's not very original. Not remotely groundbreaking and not flattering unless you're bony rather than buxom.

Why do people still think that this is a thread of women putting women down. I bet there are quite a few men in the room too. Also its not a 'fashion' thread - just one of the many labour bashing threads. Extra points for creativity.

Labour bashing? I'm all in for bashing all political parties in power but someone's dress choice is neither here nor there. Unless you talk about the price of the dress. But then again she's not necessarily for Labour just because she's in love with Andy Burnham.

Fyi, she's not called "Mrs Heel".

That's horrible. And calling her "Mrs Burnham" is pathetic.

She’s definitely not silly 🙄

The dress made her look silly.

editing to say she could look very striking of course but VB dresses not flattering in general.

I think she’s trying to be humorous now as the thread didn’t quite go the way OP had intended.

I just turned on Newsnight and there she was in the dress with AB.
She looked great! If only I had her figure!

No-one knows, yet, I imagine, whether she bought the dress full price, borrowed the dress from a friend or from VB, rented the dress etc.

I've quite enjoyed Andy Burnham's social media feed over the last few weeks and I wish Marie France could have her own social media account, poking fun at her dress critics. I'd like to see that.

Oh come off it, you really haven’t seen nicer dresses on Shein!

A 10 second search bought up this one which looks quite smart. Although I admit it probably doesn’t look anything like as elegant as this in real life .
