VB's dress on Mrs Burnham - horrible

I'm not a fashion expert and I really don't care much for it but this was the most horrible dress I have ever seen. Even on a coathangar bodytype like VB herself it wouldn't look good but on an average body it's just hideous. That's 850 £ unwisely spent. She could and should have gotten a dress from M&S for 50£ and actually looked good.

What a mean thread. The phrase “If you’ve got nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all,” comes to mind. Women putting other women down is really really disappointing to read.

Well, that dress is objectively not flattering. To anyone. Ever. The only one to get her feelings potentially hurt is VB but I really don't think she's on MN.

Awesome? It’s a 95% polyester, basic swing dress. You are easily pleased!

I quite like Carrie. They don’t take themselves too seriously. There were photos on her Insta the other day of Boris dressed up as Buzz Lightyear for their child’s birthday. She was dressed up as Mr Potatohead.

Just to be politically even handed I always thought Carrie Johnson looked good in her dresses as well. I like that she rented them - great idea. I would rent myself if I thought I could get anything to fit me!

Yes but buying clothes in the correct size is a good start it’s far too tight on her tummy it looks awful. She’s an attractive lady and with a budget like that could have got something much better

Flattering a figure isn’t about showing off a body. It’s about cutting cloth to fit the body perfectly. I think she deserved a made to measure dress today because she was in the glare of the media. And it is probably that this was made to measure, as the sleeves look longer than the original.

If it was made-to-measure, then it wasn’t well measured or well cut, but I’d also blame the design if the dress itself, which is flawed because it tries to combine incongruous features. The front has two main panels with a seam down the middle, cut to have a gentle curve over the bust. This would usually provide a soft flattering shape. However, the side panels are too loose because they are intended to create a wide opening for the sleeve. The result is that that they cause a fold to extend from the sleeve to the middle of the dress. Essentially, I don’t see how you could get this sleeve design to work nicely with this dress.

I could go on. That’s just one of many things wrong with the dress, from a dressmaker’s perspective.

I loved her rear view going in to No 10.

Shes prob not reliant on his income for her £850 dress, but it doesn’t look good for the values he is promoting. Why was she there at all? It’s his job, he doesn’t need to drag his spouse or his mum along. I don’t take mine to work.

Even spanx would have helped, if she really wanted to wear a dress in an unforgiving shape and colour. I’m a size 10 and have spanx in every colour - wouldn’t dream of not wearing them with a fitted dress.

Because sometimes you read the room? Her husband is stood telling the people he is one of them, that he wants to stop homelessness. That he wants to tackle the cost of living. That he’s a man of the people. He wants people to relate to him. To see that he understands their struggles in the current climate. Standing alongside his wife wearing a designer dress that costs what some people will get in benefits for a month, doesn't make him relatable.

I have no qualms spending that much on a dress if it’s in one’s budget, but the man-of-the-people schtick really doesn’t play well with a VB number. That’s actually a more significant issue than the fact that it’s not a terribly flattering dress.

Yep, polyester with elastane. I think the OP is just on the wind up by finding the worst dresses out there.

@TheBlueKoala why have you come on here to comment on a woman’s body negatively? Of all the curious questions or thoughts you could have about Andy Burnham, you choose to criticise the body of his wife. For goodness sake! When will we start judging each other by the content of our character rather than the shape of our body or the colour of our dress? Arghhh

Exactly this! He even removed his podium to show he relates! It’s not consistent. For starters - how representative is VB? Never mind the dress, what’s the message it gives? Disappointing, Ms B could have used her new roleas PM’s wife to promote something more interesting.

Viscose 50%, Acetate 47%, Elastane 3%

So, expensive polyester. They are usually described as semi-synthetic. Viscose is actually very nice to work with, but I’d still never pay that much for a dress made from these fabrics.
