VB's dress on Mrs Burnham - horrible

I'm not a fashion expert and I really don't care much for it but this was the most horrible dress I have ever seen. Even on a coathangar bodytype like VB herself it wouldn't look good but on an average body it's just hideous. That's 850 £ unwisely spent. She could and should have gotten a dress from M&S for 50£ and actually looked good.

I watched it live on the BBC and thought the dress looked fine. It’s the photographs and the angles that make it look less “flattering.” Although what is flattering, anyway? Basically flattering usually means “thin”, doesn’t it? It means not showing any of the curves that are natural to have on women’s bodies especially when they’ve had three children.

I think it’s a shame that this thread exists. It’s a pretty damning indictment of internalised misogyny. Why is mumsnet so often a place for women tearing other women down?

I hope she never sees it, and that this isn’t a sign of how things are going to continue.

I thought she looked absolutely fine and appropriate to the occasion. My God, all this talk of her body. I'd love to see all of us on here lined up in the dress. We could take votes on who looks the worst.

She looks similar to a friend of mine, and that's about all that went through my mind when I saw her other than to briefly think that I wasn't too keen on the dress and then thinking it was nothing to do with me. I would hate to have to plan what on earth to wear on such a (relatively!) unusual event and in the full glare of the world's media. I'd want to throw up!

@Calliopespa I'm not a fan of VB's structureless, thin fabric styles, and I don't think they are easy for anyone to wear if I am honest: if you are too thin you looks shapeless and scrawny, and if not very thin it shows every bump. I wonder what most of the nasty posters on here would have looked like in something similarly cut...

That's a bit of a silly take on it.
Being the wife of a prime minister, arriving at No 10, it matters very much what you wear. Outfits are photographed and talked about afterwards for decades.
Like it or not, that's the reality.

She looked fine and I'm sure the King wasn't overly concerned.

I think she looks fine. Yes she has a bit of a stomach, like many women her age, but to say its the worse dress you’ve seen? Massive exaggeration. I hope she doesn’t google herself to see what people think of her dress and she another woman making the effort to criticise her online. If you are reading it Mrs B, just remember this kind of post says more about the people who wrote it. You look nice.

I expect she didn't want to be uncomfortable in Spanx when it's so hot.

After all, Boris Johnson didn't wear Spanx, and he has plenty of lumps and bumps.

Not difficult. For starters I wouldn't have chosen VB design because they are impossible to wear for 99% of women.

Quite, It would look awful on a lot of people. BUT it had nice aspects - the sleeves and colour - and she'd have been slammed whatever she wore.

The only woman to emerge before the public post 45 who isn't in an industry obsessed with looking right for the camera and have people say "that was actually stunning" was Camilla in her wedding dress. And I bet that had months upon months of styling and scaffolding and recutting to achieve the result.
