Visitors turning up unannounced on a Sunday evening. WWYD?

ShorterMumma · 21/06/2026 21:37

I'm so embarrassed, someone turned up at my house this evening at about 7.30pm.
The house snd I are an absolute state.

I'm moving bedrooms with the dc, theres stuff everywhere. I'm absolutely exhausted from decorating, work, being a single parent of 4dc.

I am embarrassed but also annoyed as this person could have texted but decided to surprise me.
They know I hate uninvited visitors.

My ds said I should have kept them on the doorstep.

Should I have ?

WWYD?

I wouldn’t have opened the door

PinkNBlueBunnies · 21/06/2026 21:38

Unless it was someone very special, I would have told them on the doorstep that they couldn’t come in due to redecorating.

Namechangeforthisdilemma1 · 21/06/2026 21:38

Who the F does this?!

I wouldn’t have opened the door either. Would have texted “got the shits, sorry!”

icannotlivelaughloveintheseconditions · 21/06/2026 21:39

I’d have either ignored the door or kept them on the doorstep and said it’s not convenient I’ll ring you tomorrow

beasmithwentworth · 21/06/2026 21:41

Your situation just gave me heart palpitations. My house is in a similar state. In my head I would like to have thought I’d come out with a stock / no nonsense answer and sent them on their way but in reality I would have been so flustered I would have probably welcomed them in pretending I was completely fine with it and delighted to see them.

Thoughts and prayers @ShorterMumma

Skybluepinky · 21/06/2026 21:41

I would have told them to come in and explained they’ll have to excuse you and the house, and you need to finish tonight so they didn’t stay all night.

I wouldn't have but I thought it was an Amazon delivery.

If they know you hate uninvited visitors (which is fine, I do as well) but turned up anyway, were they trying to piss you off or did they think it was ‘funny’?!

Growlybear83 · 21/06/2026 21:43

I would have just invited them in for a cup of tea and explained that youve got loads to do before bedtime.

Pearlstillsinging · 21/06/2026 21:43

I'd have got them carrying stuff from room to room to get the house straight!

Arewethebadguys · 21/06/2026 21:44

Obviously hide behind the sofa . . . 🤷‍♀️

I was actually stunned.

They coujd see how uncomfortable I was. I think its incredibly rude to turn up anywhere unannounced and I would never do it.

You shouldn't be embarrassed! The surprise caller should be! How did you handle it?

shizerhousen · 21/06/2026 21:44

Id be so annoyed. What was the purpose of the visit? Were they just dropping in casually? Either way it’s random and irritating enough for you to tell them it’s not a good time.

Invited them in, made small talk and offered them a drink.

If they were just an acquaintance then I would have said they could come in for a quick cuppa but that I have work to do before the kids bedtime so it has to be very quick
If family or a good friend I would have led the way to the worst bit and set them to work . I would be thrilled if I went to a good friends house and was put to work to help her.

mondaytosunday · 21/06/2026 21:46

I would have said (if I answered, though you can see my tv is on from the front path) that it wasn’t convenient! My big fear is a close friend who lives a few streets away and often jogs or walks her dog by my house might get caught short and ask to use the loo. Her house is immaculate, because that’s just the way they live. Mine is definitely lived in as most of the time I live on my own . Ugh.

7238SM · 21/06/2026 21:47

I would have checked our cameras to see who was at the door and depending who it was, decide whether to let them in. I'm fully in the 'its very rude to not text and check beforehand brigade'.

Why were they there OP? What did you say to them?

ShorterMumma · 21/06/2026 21:47

They were in the area apparently, visiting a relative they would have known hours ago they were heading into London.

Only on mumsnet are people so hung up about surprise visits. Friends don't care about the state of your house, they have come to see you.

Honestly, if they’ve got the balls to knock on the door of a single parent to four children at 7.30 on a school night, then they probably have the balls to understand you when you say ‘it’s half 7, we’re winding down for the night and getting ready for school’. Don’t be afraid to talk straight to these people. They would if you did something like this to them.

Also, your front door is for your convenience, not anyone else’s. Same with your phone. Appreciate you were waiting for Amazon, but remember that for next time.
