To report these supermarket workers?

thetimeisnow · 17/06/2026 12:24

As I walked past some supermarket workers, they were having a chat, one said
' i couldnt tell if it was a man or woman'
Then another said ' we have one of them where i live'

I think it was inappropriate.

But am I over thinking and being unreasonable?!

So protest, sign petitions, lobby your MP. It is not OK for people in the workplace to speak like this. If it becomes acceptable then it's open season.

As women we have experienced what Allport describes here, that's why there is so much violence against women.

Ironically often incited by the very demographic that the workers were discussing.

We can lobby everyone but while our esteemed leaders maintain that women can be born with penises, we are wasting our time

Tbf the trans lobby has in fact hurt many many people. If someone wants to pretend to be something they aren’t then that’s fine until it impacts half the population.

So I’m comfortable being a dick about people who (often aggressively) try to erase my rights and my existence. If you are happy with men trying to access women’s rape crisis centres or play rugby against young teen girls then that’s up to you, but you don’t get to consent for everyone.

As a woman there is a hell of a lot that concerns me about a loss of women only spaces, along with other factors.

But in this scenario, where is it stated that the individual being slagged off was trans? And why should that make them a target for abuse when they had (presumably) done nothing wrong?

Also, one person is not responsible for the behaviour of all. Do you actually believe that it is acceptable to behave in an abusive/aggressive/unpleasant manner to one person who presumably didn't start pushing their agenda, just because you don't agree with people identifying alternatively?

It's not about women being suppressed, it's about being unkind to/about others for literally no reason whatsoever.

There is plenty wrong with society today, but people need to take responsibility for their own shitty behaviour, and do what they can to make the world they inhabit better. Be fucking nice to people unless they actually give you a genuine reason not to.

Yes, let's make workers into Stepford wives. If this really happened, the the OP should have said something there and then. As for the organisation you work for, thank God I'm retired.

How the fuck is expecting people to behave decently to others making them into "Stepford Wives"?

It really is no wonder there is so much aggression and tension in this country these days with views like this.

Wonder why children are stabbing each other at school? Look to their parents who refuse to demonstrate any kind of decency towards others.

And you may prefer to work in a feral environment where half the team are off sick with mental health issues as their colleagues behaviour goes unchecked, but I bloody wouldn't. I've had to deal with people "sharing their opinion" and the fall out it can cause far too many times.

How do you get from supermarket chit chat to kids stabbing each other? Way OTT.

I don’t want to live in a country where people paint violent anti women slogans on signs while at the same time thinking they can become a woman. I don’t want to live somewhere where men get awarded women’s prizes and are so full of jealousy/delusion.

I don’t want to live somewhere where some creepy bloke can put a wig on and claim to need gynaecology services.

Women feel threatened - bloody right we aren’t going to accept this shit mildly.

From the attitude of some posters on here, who will pass this attitude onto their kids.

Yes it was an OTT comment, but behaviour breeds behaviour.

Neither do I, but this isn't what this thread is about

This isn't a trans issue, this is an issue about people openly being demeaning to other people and that being OK. It's not OK.

If the supermarket workers were talking about women, or black people or disabled people would that be OK too in your view?

It isn't demeaning to say you cannot tell if someone is male or female, it is part of using eyes and their own words and as I pointed out before, the transes would LOVE this. Calling the person male or female and being wrong would result in 'misgendering' which is a hate crime these days.

It's ridiculous to try and compare this as being the same. Women, disabled people and black people are not trying to pretend they are something they can never be and shoehorn themselves into places they have no right to be!

No because being racist etc is not a protected characteristic. Being GC is.

Context is everything here.

This was said by staff in a supermarket in what was clearly a bitchy way, on the shopfloor where it was heard by customers. Can you really not see how this is not okay?

You may have skin as thick as these morons who take pride in "speaking as they find", but others don't.

There is simply no need to make unkind comments about others, unprovoked, to be unkind and entertain others. It isn't ever nice, or reasonable in any way.

This is also not an trans issue, or related to women's rights, or any other vulnerable or minority group. It's some staff at work doing something that in this day and age, any decent employer would not tolerate.

LuckyHazelFox · 18/06/2026 18:16

They've got a shitty job where they have to put up with abuse themselves. I'm not surprised they need to let off steam. I couldn't imagine being so bothered when I'm there to just do my shopping. They haven't hurt anybody.

Were they speaking about a customer or a general comment? For someone who was only eavesdropping for a short period of time, OP seems to have picked up a lot of context.

It is acceptable to discuss the madness of the ‘gender’ debate although they probably should have done it away from listening ears

They weren't being openly abusive to people though were they? The person they were talking about wasn't there. They had no clue. Where did I say it was okay to be abusive to anyone?

But that's not what I was replying to anyway.

So it's OK to be openly abusive to people?

It's definitely okay in this instance since this never happened.

thetimeisnow · Yesterday 13:15

Haha, ok then.

I had passed said person they were referring to. And who they were all staring at.

Like it or not, some man trying to look like a woman is going to attract attention. Particularly as the ones that are less likely to pass are the ones who dress as a caricature of a woman, rather than what most women would wear to the supermarket.
