To report these supermarket workers?

thetimeisnow · 17/06/2026 12:24

As I walked past some supermarket workers, they were having a chat, one said
' i couldnt tell if it was a man or woman'
Then another said ' we have one of them where i live'

I think it was inappropriate.

But am I over thinking and being unreasonable?!

So you want to curb free speech and ‘retrain’ the wrong opinions ? Wow.

Psychotic!!!! It's like being in the 1930s spurred on by people like OP!! What an absolute joke!

I’m actually sort of furious that in this day and age with the cost of living crisis and unemployment rising you’d “report” (what do you think Tesco managers are, the police?) minimum wage workers likely working harder than you for far less for a conversation you only heard part of. You are an awful person OP.

Apparently hurty feelings trump everything.

Topseyt123 · 17/06/2026 13:19

Report what and to whom? Or perhaps this is another example of the need for a new government department entitled Department for Mumsnet Reports with it's own dedicated retinue of civil servants.

This wouldn't even feature on my radar of things to get het up over.

TropicalFishAreTwats · 17/06/2026 13:20

'I couldn't tell if it was a man or a woman' is a statement of fact, surely? If you witness a crime and the police ask if the offender was a man or a woman and you didn't know you would say 'I couldn't tell if it was a man or a woman'.
You can be as inclusive as you like but sometimes you just can't accurately tell if someone is a man or a woman 🤷‍♀️

I would be a joke if it wasn’t so concerning. You only have to look at threads here to see that she’s not alone.

redbottleblue · 17/06/2026 13:20

Are people not allowed to have an informal chat with each other anymore? People will always say things you don't like, you can't police people like that. What a depressing world to live in if everything we say gets monitored and checked against the inclusion criteria.

thetimeisnow · 17/06/2026 13:20

This is why I thought i would ask!
Fair enough I've over thought it.

thank you, I will not give it another thought!

Edited

It's absolutely despicable! I can't even see straight to type I'm so disgusted. What insanity.

Don't ever go into public, talk to other people or do anything that requires being around others who have freedom of will, speech or thought. You need some serious help. Maybe North Korea will accept you as a citizen or Iran.

Thats good but in the future really think about what you're risking would you want to be responsible for someone losing their job, home, marriage children, mental health and just another family stuck on benefits because this is the reality of what can happen and for what so you can think your clever and inclusive

Rachelshair · 17/06/2026 13:25

Some people would be ok with not being immediately identifiable as a man or a woman, and appear that way on purpose, why are you presuming bad faith? Some people are non binary, is this a problem for you?

Keroppi · 17/06/2026 13:25

Being forced to do stupid inclusion training like you're at a re-education camp does not magically make people more "inclusive". People just learn to not talk about their own opinions at work. Fair enough

They shouldn't be gossiping whilst working especially if it's around a topic others may find offensive but standards of customer service are absolutely shocking these days. No slurs or offensive language used so nothing to report on

Some of the cashiers lately at my Aldi are having a chat on their headset (an actual chat not just asking/answering questions) whilst ringing me up - that's rude.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 17/06/2026 13:26

Omg op, report immediately to the rozzers as a hate crime, the manager so they can undergo enforced re-education and even then id get them sacked from their minimum wage job. Also tell BashBack so they can organise a howling mob in black camouflage to harass anyone who dares set foot in the place.
Ffs.

Ok, im fine with being told to get a hobby.

Like porkpieforstarters said, it is nasty and if it did hit personally I would be sad that people can say it and out loud in a busy supermarket.

I would ask tesco manager to re do the training about inclusion.

They didnt say anything nasty tho? Just observed they couldnt tell? They didnt stand there saying 'trans people are awful it shouldnt be allowed' or something offensive like that?

Its fine for people to make an observation they can't tell if someone is a man or a woman, in a private conversation.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 17/06/2026 13:31

Calling a human 'it' isn't very polite but it is a way of speaking when sex isn't clear. Clearly the person concerned wasn't present - so there was no harm done.

I'm not sure if it would be hurtful to hear that you can't be identified as man or woman. You might have chosen an androgenous look and be pleased?

Berlinlover · 17/06/2026 13:31

Lomonald · 17/06/2026 13:16

You don't get training about working with people with disabilities or anything?

No, why would I?

Lomonald · 17/06/2026 13:32

Berlinlover · 17/06/2026 13:31

Why wouldn't you ?

How did the only person who agreed with you know it was Tescos?

Backedoffhackedoff · 17/06/2026 13:37

Lomonald · 17/06/2026 13:32

Why wouldn't you ?

I suppose because they are hourly paid to do an hours shift on the shop floor so not much investment is made in non essential training?

Berlinlover · 17/06/2026 13:38

Lomonald · 17/06/2026 13:32

Why wouldn't you ?

We treat all customers the same. Those with disabilities aren’t aliens for crying out loud, just ordinary human beings. No special training required.

TheBloomingDahlia · 17/06/2026 13:38

I think calling someone “it” and “one of them” is quite rude. But were they talking about you? If not then I would just ignore

Morepositivemum · 17/06/2026 13:39

Yabu for wanting to report and potentially get them in trouble but yes, horrible attitude- awful

SassyGit · 17/06/2026 13:40

Time and time again people ask how China ended up with Mao, how Iran became Iran, how England was almost overtaken in 1930s and how North Korea is in it's current state.

Absolutely disgusting.

Disgusting, cowardice from people who want to police people behind the guise of 'rules' and 'inclusivity' and whatever ideology is trending. Can't even see how it's to their own detriment.

Limited, malicious and appalling.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 17/06/2026 13:40

No. It is non of your business.

Nocameltoeleggingsplease · 17/06/2026 13:41

Dear Tesco

Today I overheard one of your minimum wage workers speaking to a colleague. I have no idea about the context of the conversation, and as far as I am aware it was not about me or anyone I know. However, I have so little going on in my life I was hugely offended by it anyway and would like you to waste these workers time with even more training to make them into nice little PC drones. Even better, can you replace them with computers?

Thanks
