To report these supermarket workers?

thetimeisnow · 17/06/2026 12:24

As I walked past some supermarket workers, they were having a chat, one said
' i couldnt tell if it was a man or woman'
Then another said ' we have one of them where i live'

I think it was inappropriate.

But am I over thinking and being unreasonable?!

"It" and "one of them" is pretty nasty, it's not inclusive or supportive is it and would be horrible to overhear if it affected you. It also goes against Tesco's published stance on LGBTQ+:
https://www.tescoplc.com/sustainability/colleagues/pride

Some of the conversations I overhear between the shelfstackers in an evening are shocking. You wouldn't get away with it in other jobs, I don't see why they should in theirs, especially when they can be easily overheard by customers.

I'm with you, OP.

How did you know it was Tesco?

PorkPieForStarters · 17/06/2026 15:00

SerendipityJane · 17/06/2026 14:55

It takes a bit of fiddling.

Who would bother? I probs just made an assumption based on my experiences at my local Tesco. MN can easily see we're not the same person. Nice try.

Springtimeinsunshine · 17/06/2026 14:45

Omg thank you, I thought I was going insane. The first person to mention tesco was a poster and not the OP.

I thought sock puppets were no longer able to post on the same thread?

I’ve just clocked that and posted! Should read more of the thread in future!

Trying to get people fired for being un-pc is actually pretty nasty behaviour.

Oh there's loads of that where I work unfortunately.

Probs yeah that’s what’s happened 🤔!

I mean you wouldn’t get that behaviour in Waitrose when buying naice ham!

So you want to curb free speech and ‘retrain’ the wrong opinions ? Wow.

Well that's exactly what has been going on for the last few years.

tachetastic · 17/06/2026 15:07

DressOrSkirt · 17/06/2026 14:55

What offensive language was used?

I think the comments that were referenced in the OP were capable of offending people. I did not suggest reporting any named individuals. I just don't think it hurts for people to be reminded that when they are wearing a work uniform they should reflect the values of their employers, and I think a large supermarket would not want any of its customers thinking their staff were being inappropriate.

DBSFstupid · 17/06/2026 15:08

youalright · 17/06/2026 13:24

Thats good but in the future really think about what you're risking would you want to be responsible for someone losing their job, home, marriage children, mental health and just another family stuck on benefits because this is the reality of what can happen and for what so you can think your clever and inclusive

THIS 👏👏👏

Time and time again people ask how China ended up with Mao, how Iran became Iran, how England was almost overtaken in 1930s and how North Korea is in it's current state.

Absolutely disgusting.

Disgusting, cowardice from people who want to police people behind the guise of 'rules' and 'inclusivity' and whatever ideology is trending. Can't even see how it's to their own detriment.

Limited, malicious and appalling.

This. It is EVERWHERE.
I have seen this is China. They are encouraged to report each other and there are massive consequences.
Communism by the back door.

The sentences in the OP are completely neutral without further context.
They could have said in awe "I love how androgonus they were dressed, I couldn't even tell if it was a man or a woman".

SorcererGaheris · 17/06/2026 15:25

Anarchy99 · 17/06/2026 14:30

And say what? You picked up two lines of a private conversation. They might have been talking about anyone in any context.

Even if they were talking about someone who was androgynous or ‘non conforming’ or whatever, gender critical views are protected by law so they have every right to have them.

Were they talking about you?

The thing about inclusion training is that it’s pointless. It doesn’t change people’s opinions. If someone is racist, bigoted or whatever, there’s no amount of training in the world that will make a difference. Even if they know not to voice that opinion, they still hold it.

You don’t know the context of the conversation and it wasn’t anything to do with you.

I think that's the point of inclusion training though - in many (if not most cases), I think it's understood that if someone is truly bigoted, the training usually won't change that - it will just hopefully prevent them from manifesting their prejudice in the work environment.

I don't think it's about actually changing anyone's minds, but making sure that people behave acceptably at work. Basically, if someone is bigoted, keep it out of the workplace.

You mean magic words.

thetimeisnow · 17/06/2026 15:37

To put more content.
They were all staring at a person when one said 'i couldn't tell if it was a man or woman.'

They all laughed.

Then straight after the other person said 'we have one of them where we live'

I wouldnt have named names or times, just a nudge that staff represent the company and some conversations should be held in the staff room.

I have a gender questioning teen.
Maybe thats why it hit a nerve?

Off topic in a way.. but where I live there are three Waitrose, that I walk to, in varying directions and distances from me. In each one the staff nowadays talk VERY LOUDLY to each other, clutter up the aisles chatting, call across the aisles, chatting, as if customers arent there, and are invariably talking about nights out, being drunk, hangovers, clothing … young person topics. I feel as if I’m invading someone else’s pub experience, while trying to buy family dinner. Does this reflect Waitrose? It IS Waitrose… they hired and presumable even ‘ trained’ these staff.

Ah now there’s a drip feed..

Gender critical views are protected by law in the workplace, it’s not the same as racism or homophobia.

Just because you take is personally doesn’t mean you have a right to complain.

You cannot be legally sacked simply for holding or expressing these views. Obviously if they are having a go at a trans person that’s a different issue.

So if they were reported, management aren’t going to do much of anything or they could be sued,

I hope you are teaching them that they can't change sex, and they can't access things that are specifically for the opposite sex. Out of curiosity do they have any (can't think of the right terms) triggers such as autism, self harming, hating body changes in puberty, or homophobic friends/family members etc? I think over 80% of referrals to Tavistock had these and it's now thought that if the children had been given decent support they would have grown through this phase. Very thought provoking.

But people don’t need training for that. If someone is racist then they are racist. Just because they don’t express it outright, it doesn’t mean they won’t think of someone negatively and that it won’t prejudice their behaviour in some way.

Absolutely right re the triggers etc. If your child thinks they can change sex then they need to be told they can’t. They can wear what they want, do things that are more typical for the opposite sex etc but they can’t change sex and they cant use the facilities for the sex that they pretend they are
