Sure teacher is lying, but can't prove it

My 12 year old son received a detention (c2) for talking in class. He is usually as good as gold and gets great feedback, so this was very unusual. He said he got this with no verbal warning or c1, which is the procedure they're supposed to follow. He said she shouted c2 whilst pointing at him from across the room.
I challenged the procedure not being followed. The teacher emailed me in response with a completely different version of events. She said he'd had several warnings, then. C1 from her, then a c2 from the librarian! My son has admitted he was talking too much, but is adamant her version was no where near the truth. He even checked with one of the kids after the fact, who agreed.
I know when my kid lies. He goes bright red and its so obvious atm. I know he's telling the truth, and I'm disgusted how he's been treated. I think she just lost her temper and knows she did wrong. The detention itself was very short and never recorded in the system. He said she just said as this is your first strike and you're usually so good let's let this one go.

So I emailed back expressing i understood his talking was unacceptable, however I was very concerned about the difference in recalling events. She's doubled down and said her report is accurate.

Do I let this one go, or not? My gut is telling me she's definitely lying, but I don't know what to do or its worth pursuing further.

Iirc Op said at her school C1s are recorded, involve negative house points and come after the verbal warning. My kids' school is the same.

Not entirely clear from OP's posts whether the C2 was recorded - if it was you'd think it would be clear whether teacher or librarian gave it. Maybe they have a mechanism for giving a detention without a recorded C2, which would be different from ours where the recorded C2 triggers the detention message.

Sorry, triggered my detective instincts. It's still not the main point here.

It was in the library but the librarian doesnt usually give out offical sanctions. C2s are usually recorded via bromcom and the parent would get the notification as soon as its updated and the detention held that day or next break that follows. My child got notified to go see his teacher 2 days after. At the detention was told as this was first strike she was letting them off this time with a shorter detention. I'm guessing that's why it wasn't recorded. My son's still upset no one believes him regarding the fact the teacher gave the c2 straight out, and is feeling awkward and nervous facing her in class tomorrow and doesn't understand why she's saying it wasn't her. Hard to know what to say other than it wouldn't have happened if you weren't talking. It's all been a bit mudled though from what I've heard from other parents so has been confusing. Doesn't change fact he was talking obviously.

Tell him teachers make mistakes too and maybe this one did, but main thing is if he keeps his head down and doesn't disrupt lessons then he shouldn't have any more trouble.

It does sound like teacher has mucked up to some extent, at minimum failing to record things correctly. She knows you know.

I'm reckoning both teacher and your DS will be on their best behaviour now. If he gets any more detentions outside the official system, maybe a quick polite query to his form tutor to find out what's going on.

Thanks. This is pretty much exactly what I said not long ago. He'll just need time to process it I think. He does tend to get easily anxious due to a syndrome he has, so getting the balance between support and not being over protective can be difficult. We're all still learning. Just want to put it to bed now!

Goodness, it's hardly crime of the century. Sometimes they're allowed to talk, sometimes they're not allowed to talk. In primary school they were trained to ask their neighbour first if they weren't clear on the task. In secondary DD regularly complains about the level of chat teachers allow in lessons and prefers to work in silence, and even she has had a C1 for talking. She didn't think she was, and given how she is I agreed with her it was probably a mistake, she hasn't got any before or since so it doesn't seem to have turned her into a delinquent. I figure it's kind of good for them to have a C1 or detention early on, they learn it's not the end of the world and teachers still like you just as much. I hope your DS has now made that discovery OP.
