Not, caught something out the corner of your eye or felt a presence, I mean actually seen one, spoken to one etc?

im aware this sounds woo. I don’t think I do believe in them, never seen one but ppl I have spoken to say they have.

maybe some ppl are more receptive to these things or maybe it’s a trick of the mind?

just be interested in anyones experience really

Yep. Saw an apparition early one morning at work. Asked around surreptitiously, if anyone knew "who worked here that used to wear X all the time with X hair?" Fourth person I asked, an older lady near retirement, was shocked, asked me why I wanted to know. I told her that I "saw" this person and that I knew that was weird to say. She told me I was describing someone who used to work there, but died several years ago.

Thepossibility · 10/02/2026 05:19

You're not allowed to say you have seen one on here but yes I actually have seen two. One of them my dad also saw it at the same time and he is not one to believe in woo things at all. The other was seen by different members of the household at different times.

Plinketyplonks · 10/02/2026 06:59

Not me but we stayed in an old coaching inn once in Lancaster when my son was about five. I shared a bed with him and in the morning I asked how he slept and he said in the night he woke up and there was a lady standing next to me looking down at the bed. I meant to ask at reception on the way out wheyher there had been reports of ghosts in that room.

Yes. In St Mary & St Finnan church in Glenfinnan in the Scottish Highlands. It was very eerie and unsettling.

What happened?

Yes I have. And yes they do exist.

Tell us more

No I haven’t but when I was a child we had a Labrador and when my dad used to walk towards a certain small pond she wouldn’t walk past it. There was stories that a horse and cart went in the pond and somebody drowned a very long time ago. She would freeze and growl. The pond is still there and it looks very eerie, lots of trees fallen into it and horrible black water, looks really spooky to this day. I think animals do pick up on things that we can’t

EverythingGolden · 10/02/2026 07:21

I’ve often seen and heard people including my late mother in my bedroom or faces next to me when I’ve been in and out of sleep but it’s sleep paralysis/hypnogogia.

I spoke to someone who thought he’d been abducted by aliens once but when he described it, it sounded exactly like sleep paralysis. Of course he was having non of that.

I have heard them. DH and I stayed in an extremely old part of a dilapidated French chateau. Every night there was loud banging in the kitchen someone opening cupboard doors and banging them loudly. No one else was there. It was not pipes. We went down to see - nothing.

DH is the ultimate sceptic but even he had no explanation for it either and was also glad to leave.

My 6ft4 cousin is definitely not woo & I’ve never seen him scared of anything. On the way to visit family in France he broke up the drive staying overnight in a very old house bought by some family friends in the last year.

He arrived at dusk & after making some dinner went up to bed. As he was getting ready for bed a broom or similar fell from the wall onto his back. He didn’t think much of it but thought it was odd that the object fell on him with quite a force which didn’t really make sense. He went to bed & in the early hours was woken up by a huge crash, he ran downstairs to investigate but nothing was awry. He then heard the same crashing from upstairs & went back up to investigate. Again nothing to explain the noise but he said he was overcome by a real sense of foreboding & something telling him he wasn’t welcome up there. He grabbed the bedding and went downstairs and slept the rest of the night on the sofa.

Months later when we were caught up with the family friends he told them the story. They said they no longer slept upstairs when visiting the property, for whatever reason they felt a malicious force at night if they went upstairs. They sold it on fairly quickly!

My cousin doesn’t believe in ghosts or haunted houses but he said he would never stay there again.

treeowl · 10/02/2026 08:15

My family have equally old French property but i’ve never felt anything off when staying.

JuliettaCaeser · 10/02/2026 08:25

We didn’t feel off we just heard it! So
loud!

Happened again 18 years later. Banging in the old country house we were staying in. We had to collect a parcel from the owners elderly mother who used to live there. She asked if the poltergeists were still there banging in the lower sitting room. Yes yes they are. She had got a priest in to
no avail!

BlueEyedBogWitch · 10/02/2026 08:35

I’ve seen two, and heard/felt more.

If time isn’t linear, as the quantum physicists tell us, could ‘ghosts’ be glimpses of the simultaneous channels that are running?

I haven’t expressed that very well…

mayflowers9 · 10/02/2026 08:41

When I was 19, I came out of my childhood bedroom and saw a blonde woman in a black dress go into my brother’s room down the hall. It was early afternoon. I thought it was my mother and called out to her. No answer, so I went into the room and it was empty. DM was downstairs in the cellar.

I had a lot of unnerving experiences in that house as a child – I remember seeing a shadow figure creep around my room while I was in bed, for example – but now I wonder if my memory has embellished them. That moment when I was 19 was clear as day.

SheepInTheTrough · 10/02/2026 08:52

My mum loved her cigarettes. After she died I went into her study to look for photographs to use in the order of service for her funeral. As I sat down at her desk the room filled with the smell of fresh cigarette smoke. Not stale smoke like that left in a room, but the very strong smell of someone actually smoking. It wasn't scary, just very comforting.

I got some photos and went downstairs where my brother and dad were sitting chatting. I told them the story and immediately the same smell filled the room. I stopped talking and we all just stared at each other like mad then all started saying stuff like, 'Bloody hell!!'.

Can't explain it but goodness it was weird. I should add I am a bit woo, my brother is very woo but my dad is a matter of fact sort of fellow who would normally gleefully take the piss out of anyone woo.

Many people saw a hand moving in my previous house. It 'scurried' like a rat.
@SheepInTheTrough

Sheriden Le Fanu wrote a good ghost story about a severed hand called Ghost of a Hand.

SheepInTheTrough · 10/02/2026 09:04

@38thparallel I've just read a bit about the book. We weren't really afraid of ours at the time but I have to say it was a relief when we moved to feel that we're alone in our new place.

treeowl · 10/02/2026 09:05

@mayflowers9 I planned to never visit that house!

38thparallel · 10/02/2026 09:10

@SheepInTheTrough
Re the smell of smoking, was this quite soon after your mother died?
A similar thing happened to a friend who was a good pianist and encouraged by his father. A few days after his father died he was practising and he smelt quite strongly the aftershave his father always wore - as if he was standing by the piano like he used to do.

Laiste · 10/02/2026 10:12

Oooh the smoke smell has reminded me of something.

We rented our last house, and stayed for 4 years. We rented through an agent but the owners popped in to welcome us the first week. When we arrived i was newly pregnant. It was a 5 bedroom house and it had been completely modernised and redecorated. We were the family's first tenants, the house had been their grandfathers home and now he'd passed away (no idea if he'd died in the house - not something you ask!)

For the first couple of months, while alone during the day, every now and then i'd get the strongest whiff of pipe smoke! Specifically pipe, not cigarette or cigar. Not unpleasant. No creepy atmos or anything. Anywhere about the house. Just this random very strong whiff. In fact i'd say hello out loud to it! That's how visceral it was but how relaxed i was about it. Just thought 'it's the old guy'.

Then at some point a couple of months in the clocks (battery ones which weren't in electrical devices) all stopped at half past 6. Two bedroom clocks and the one in the living room. All at half 6 in the morning. Yes - bloody weird. We noticed the one in the living room first. Changed the battery. Nothing unusual. Then after DH had gone to work and DDs to school i went back upstairs and found the one in my bedroom sitting there stuck at half 6. I texted DH! What are the chances?!? I changed the battery and then went to eldest DDs room. Clock at half 6.

Soon after this DD 4 was born. From the moment she could move her head she would crane her neck to look up in the corner of our bedroom. We would laugh about it. On her changing mat in our bed - twisting to stare up in one specific corner. As she got older she'd babble to the corner, then point. Then smile. Then one day when she was about 1 she pointed with her finger a line from the corner across the ceiling and down the other side while chuckling.

Then when she could talk she'd she'd point and say 'man'.

Then 'man in wall'.

Then 'Man in blue'. That was in her room one evening.

We laughed all this off. Makes a good story to tell visitors!

Then when she was just 3 i was reading to her in her room before bed and she was on my lap. She looked up and said 'man's up there mummy' an pointed straight above us.

Then she said - and this makes me goose bumpy now! - 'and his face is like this: ...' and she pulled this most hideous face !!!! Fricking evil angry snarling face!!! Bared teeth. NOT a smile at all.

We moved out a week later! We'd bought a property and we're going anyway but i was soooooo glad. That really frightened me. I had her back in our room for that last week.

I had a precious ring given to me by my lovely granny shortly before her death which I kept in my jewellery box. Came downstairs on Halloween morning and it was placed on the dining room table exactly where my Dd2 always sits. There is no explanation for how it got there. I didn’t put it there neither did DH. Girls were both away no one else in the house.

A few weeks later it all came out that dd2 had been struggling with an ED and was unable to tell us. I know it’s mad but I can’t help but conclude my lovely granny (former nurse) was trying to alert me.

very well known local ghost. I was driving up the hill and had to emergency stop as a woman stepped in front of me. Sat for a few moments shaking and looking round for them - nowhere to be seen. Remembered where I was and accelerated off to my mate’s house.

Was this in the Forest of Dean by any chance? We have something similar on a road near me.

dontletmedownbruce · 10/02/2026 16:24

A ghost followed me out of an attic room down a narrow staircase, and, at point-blank range, growled over my shoulder directly into my left ear.

I felt that it wanted me out of the building (I was leaving).

I’m aware that this sounds absolutely unhinged.

It was, however, very real and it was terrifying. It happened twenty years ago and I still think about it most weeks, trying to make it make sense or find a more sensible explanation than what I have written.
